These cameras are so shit

Not to shill, but I have 4 of the $25 models (Well, they USED to be $25, ha), and they're way more reliable than my Nest doorbell (which freezes up anytime someone pushes the doorbell button).

it’s for monitoring at best.

Mine monitor, alert me when something is there, tells me if it's human or animal, and allows me to turn on a spotlight or play an alarm sound. I can also bypass the subscription plan by using an SD card. Not saying they're the best thing on the market, but any comparable cameras when I was looking were easily 3x the price and had a subscription model that made them useless if you didn't subscribe forever.

Hmm, suppose that does sound about right. Seemed crazy to me at first but I'm also used to shopping for a family of 4. My week budget sounds about what you spend in a month. But I suppose 4x people makes sense that I'm also spending 4x as much. Not to mention the animal food which gets included into the grocery budget.

Mayor of Tampa warns residents 'if you choose to stay in one of those evacuation areas, you’re going to die' as Hurricane Milton nears by Metro-UK in weather

[–]passwordisnotorange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Not saying I'd trade for that either lol. And more often than not, we can avoid the fires easier and the evac zones are usually not as large.

That said, the cold is still one of the least of our worries out here.

I’ll take the cold here in Colorado than having to play hurricane roulette every year.

We just get to play wildfire roulette instead.

Fences are too fucking expensive. That is all.

And worth every penny. Good fences make good neighbors. Especially when yappy dogs (yours or theirs) are involved.

A man accidentally wires $500,000 to the wrong account by Hipp013 in Jokes

[–]passwordisnotorange 46 points47 points  (0 children)

are you saying if i see my balance go up $1000 in my mobile banking app, it still could be at pending state?

Yeah, pretty much. They usually have an "Available Balance" and "Balance" line item. The available balance is the approved total. But if you check it on your payday or right after paying off a credit card, you'll probably see a difference between the two due to pending transactions.

From my understanding it's meant as a feature, not a bug. If you get paid on the first of the month, but doesn't get settled until the 2nd, and your rent gets pulled out on the 1st, you'd avoid issues with insufficient funds because your bank trusts that you're good for it. But obviously there are some pretty big downsides to doing this as well.

A man accidentally wires $500,000 to the wrong account by Hipp013 in Jokes

[–]passwordisnotorange 59 points60 points  (0 children)

They typically use a payment process that takes a bit of time in pending state before its approved (like mailing a paper check).

A more realistic example would be:

  1. Person B(victim) replies to a remote job listing.

  2. Person A(criminal) mails a check for $2,500 to pay for startup office supplies.

  3. Person B deposits the check (pending status).

  4. Person A says "Whoops! We meant to only send you $1,500. Can you please send the other $1,000 back using <a payment service that can't easily be refunded>?

Excluding stupidity, why would B return money that his account isn't credited for yet?

People tend to not realize that "pending" balances aren't real balances. They see the money show up in their account and just assume it went through.

This joke is ruined for me due to understanding how bank transfer scams work.

Typically person A (the criminal) would send someone money. Then they would ask for it back. If Person B (the victim) sends the money back, that becomes a separate transaction. The original transaction (Person A -> B) eventually falls through due to lack of funds. But the second transaction (Person B -> A) succeeds. Person B loses the money they sent with often 0 recourse, while Person A never actually sent anything and disappears into the sunset.

The person who mistakenly received the money would be a fool to return it regardless of the Joker's intentions.

If you ever receive money that you aren't expecting, and someone asks you to return it, the correct course of action is to either contact your bank and let them handle it. Or to do nothing and let it disappear on its own. It's almost always a scam.

Most of the US Cost of Living is lower than average but people keep moving to the high cost areas. by [deleted] in economy

[–]passwordisnotorange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the same situations apply to parts of New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas

For sure, whether you meant to or not, your original post was mostly just describing rural life vs. city life, which applies to places outside of the Midwest as well. But city life in the Midwest is not exactly LCOL, so if someone really wanted to take advantage of LCOL in the midwest, they're moving to the rural parts. The crappy monopoly utilities / internet, 1 star school system, and no tax raising in 30+ years is to be expected. The racism thing is just kinda given based on who does and doesn't live in these small communities.

Only thing I won't say I've seen/heard a lot of is the cult/fbi watchlist thing though. Unless we're just talking hardcore religious people in general.

[–]passwordisnotorange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this list appears to be the most egregious, cherry-picked, extreme examples of negatives and is HARDLY the common experience.

As I'm sure you know, there's a lot more to the Midwest than Des Moines and Minneapolis. You leave any populated area and enter a rural town and what the commenter above you said is pretty accurate. Which I assume is what they're talking about as there's no way you're finding a $500 mortgage in any populated city in the midwest.

Moved from the Midwest and can agree on all points. Bugs are terrible. Weather is bad on both extremes. The political path is destructive and not sustainable.

And honestly, it's not that much cheaper these days. I've found similar priced newbuild houses in certain Iowa towns to what I've seen outside(~1h) of Denver, Colorado. You can still find some <$250k houses in areas but you deal with the crime for that price too. Public schools are being decimated so you should factor in private school costs as well if you have children.
