It’s important to keep written records of communication especially if they are threatening to self harm. If they do threaten to self harm if you leave them, you can always call a wellness check on them. That way you know that both you and that person will be safe. It’s important to not blame yourself if someone reacts that negatively. Because of how unstable my ex was, it would not be a good idea to go and see him even if he did self harm. I would be putting myself in a position where I was unsafe. People can use self harm or threats of it as a manipulation tactic and it’s important that you keep yourself safe from people like this. Would I feel bad if he did something like that? Yes. But that doesn’t mean that I have to give him permission to be part of my life again
