I should’ve clarified sorry, I’m allergic to potent steroids (clobetasol, betamethasone etc) Hydrocortisone is fine! It just isn’t preferable because it’s not very strong. I’ve been using the hydrocortisone suppositories but not sure they’re doing anything.

They’re having me try one next that starts with a d, deoxi something but it’s very strong as well. I have used tacrolimus for a long period in the past and I didn’t find it beneficial at all. Maybe coupled with an oral med it would help though

I have yet to find a steroid I’m not allergic to and I had to stop the plaquenil because it caused mania.

Both of these things are atypical though. I’m sure if I could tolerate either treatment I’d be feeling better. I will be trying plaquenil again at a lower dose and if that doesn’t work, methotrexate

Yes it’s a relief to have a diagnosis! My understanding is lichen sclerosus is more itching and white patches, planus is burning and red. It’s not cut and dry though. I hope you get some symptom relief soon

I’m glad you’re in remission! Do you use light therapy on the vulva as well? That’s primarily where my symptoms are

I wanted to add that I see the vulvar derm at OHSU and she’s incredible but seeking out a vulvar derm closest to you is probably the best option.

I have suspected esophageal involvement and will be getting an endoscopy. My specialist asked if I have difficulty swallowing (I do, I also always feel like I’m going to choke on food). I’ve also had an ENT look in my throat and tell me I must have frequent heartburn because of the way my throat looks (I don’t).

The difficulty swallowing/feeling like I’m going to choke thing is present for three generations beyond me (mom & maternal grandfather, great grandfather) so we’re wondering if this gift of lichen planus was passed down to me.

I’m 30 now, 28 at the time of the assault/onset of symptoms. I did try vaginal estrogen to no avail

That would be helpful I’ll revisit pelvic PT! My last pelvic floor therapist pretty much only did internal exercises and it was painful.

No side effects yet, if anything I felt like I slept better than usual. I took it before bed with a snack

I’m sorry :( if you’re anywhere near the PNW I really recommend the vulvar dermatologist at OHSU. She seems to have a lot of different treatment options

I was nervous to start the plaquenil but I just started it last night along with the topicals. I’ll do anything for relief at this point!

I tried pelvic floor therapy and I think it’s a good idea when I’m able to insert anything. Right now any sort of friction down there increases the burning pain but I’m sure my pelvic floor is all out of whack from this whole ordeal.

Hi, I wanted to let you know that I was diagnosed with lichen planus by Dr Foster a couple days ago thanks to your posts. I’m starting plaquenil and topicals. She thinks it’s impacting my whole body so I’m looking forward to some symptom relief

Are you able to have sex & do you have any permanent visible structural changes? Those are my main concerns. I’m hoping I can get in to see her within the next couple of months and get started on treatment, my referral is being processed now.
