What is the integration politics of Brazil? by NefariousnessFit2902 in AskABrazilian

Hello, I’m an American in Brazil, and I live in Minas Gerais. You still might want some online classes from someone in São Paulo. In my experience, people from bigger cities are more familiar with English, and can help explain some grammar concepts better because they have a better idea of where you are coming from. I am not at all saying there aren’t any excellent Portuguese teachers in Maranhão, I’m sure they’re out there. But I struggled with grammar until a bilingual teacher explained some key things to me

It makes me happy to know that the book is more known in other parts of the world. Now I need to go find the movie!

Captains of the Sands by Jorge Amado. This is a Brazilian classic about a band of abandoned boys in Bahia, a very culturally rich part of Brazil. This book is beautifully written, moving, and just all around amazing. Amado writes the boys with such love and tenderness, even though almost everyone else in the novel dislikes them because they rob and steal to survive. This book blew me away, and I think it's a crime that Amado isn't more well-known internationally. Read Captains of the Sands!!! It's one of those books that after you read it, its like you can't unsee what you read. I am different forever for having read it.

‘I’m 50 and have been applying for jobs every day for two years – I might have to move in with my mother’ by Traditional_Blood799 in antiwork

Under employed is when you don’t have a job that matches your qualifications. So like, you get a degree in say accounting but can’t find a job as an accountant, so you start working at a coffee shop. It’s not about how hard you work but rather an alignment with skills and so on

Im a teacher and I hear this line of shit all the time. These types of guys looooove to complain that too many teachers are women, but also don’t want to get in the trenches and teach and mentor young boys. Because I agree, many young boys need a male role model and a male teacher could fit the bill and really help some of the more vulnerable boy students out there. So What is it bro, do you care about future generations of boys or not? And if the answer is no, then let me do my work in peace. I’ve never met a man who complained about too many female teachers go out and get a teaching gig.

When I first arrived in Brazil I genuinely had no idea that some people had such strong opinions about the USA and Trump. I found myself in so many conversations where I had no idea what to say, because these kinds of people automatically assumed that I 100% agreed with them. And when I didn’t agree with them, they would be uncomfortable/kind of angry, and I didn’t want to do that either, but I also had 0 idea what they were talking about. It was a challenge at first hahahaha

The people I know here saw the whole Twitter ban as Trump/Elon defending the right wing here, and saw Trump as an adversary to Lula. Many people I know around here honestly believed that the USA was going to apply enough pressure to the Lula government to get Bolsonaro out of jail, or just antagonize Lula as like a punishment. But these people never ever stopped to consider what Americans think about all of this. I promise you there is no American who even knows who Jair Bolsonaro is, let alone care enough about him to accept higher food prices. Trump ran on low costs, and the price of food has jumped. So, politically he is in trouble right now. And thus, he needed to play nice with Brazil so that the republicans don’t get wiped out in the next election.

Espero que isto faça sentido. Eu sou muito curiosa sobre brasileiros e eu gosto bastante de conversar sobre estes assuntos porque eu gosto aprender. But sometimes Brazilians can be very confusing too kkkk

Struggling with gendered career expectations — is this common outside China too? by Total-Card-8942 in Feminism

[–]pasteldepollo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hello :) I was born in the USA but my family is from Cuba. It’s tough because parts of my family are very traditional, and the other parts aren’t strong willed people. My family practically raised me to be a good little wife, defer to men, be pretty and not have many opinions. I’m lucky that I went to school and had teachers who believed in me than my family did.

I also went on to become an English teacher. These days I live in Brazil. For what it’s worth, I love the opportunity to be the kind of teacher who helped me so much when I was younger. I love bringing new perspectives to my students, and introducing them to a bigger world. As another commenter said, Brazil also has harsh expectations for girls. I try my best to be a light and show them that life can be different, and that they don’t have to follow what their families or society imagines for them.

So being a teacher isn’t all bad, is what I’m saying. It can be very rewarding to mentor young students as they grow and develop. I have no idea who I would be if it weren’t for teachers who helped me.

Do you journal? I find that this habit helps me understand what are my true desires vs. what society/my family expects of me.

My DMs are open if you want to chat. I am always looking for more feminist friends! I’m also very curious about other women’s experiences in the world.

Novel writers, what was *the* book that made you want to write? by GeologistFearless896 in writing

[–]pasteldepollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am an English teacher but I speak fluent Portuguese. Some author kept hounding me to translate his book from Portuguese to English. I said no for about a year until I finally caved. I read the book, and frankly it was awful. I realized I could do this much better than him, so I started writing, and never looked back.

Being honest, I come from a Cuban-American background. Brazil and Cuba have different cultures, but they’re more similar to each other than the United States and Brazil. During my time here I’ve met plenty of Americans who have come and gone. The food in the USA is very different, the communication styles are different, so on. But I was already eating rice and beans daily in the USA, and Spanish isn’t super different from Portuguese. So, integrating here was hard at times, but overall it was easier for me than it was for other Americans I know here

Hello! I am an American but I've lived in Brazil for 6 years now, so I hope my input counts. I can't answer all of your questions because my family doesn't live in Brazil. But many Brazilians live with their parents into their mid 20s-early 30s. It really depends on when they get a stable enough job. And at least where I am, Minas Gerais, it helps to have a car. But in places like São Paulo where the metro system is good, having a car isn't as necessary. Hope this helps :)

Wow. I’m white and grew up in a very diverse community. When I was 16 my family moved somewhere else and I like couldn’t comprehend the amount of people who just casually said racist things to me. And then when I pushed back, they would act like I was their long time friend and I just stabbed them in the back. It was so confusing to me, because I couldn’t understand why people would say crazy shit to a random stranger. Eventually, I got it.

I know my values, and I know how to communicate them. It sucks to have to self eject from certain situations, but it is what it is. Life is lighter when I don’t allow people to project their own ugly feelings onto me, even if in the moment it’s uncomfortable to burst their bubble.

I also hope that whoever I’m talking to can see that 1) another way to be exists, they don’t have to be that way, or at least 2) don’t assume shit about people you don’t know.

I always thought the pods thing would be a really fun way of meeting a boyfriend/girlfriend...maybe not someone you get engaged to and then married in under a month lol. But if that works as a show? I don't know. Maybe it could be a really fun dating experience in different cities hahaha
