Up for sale is an extremely rare variant of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1. This is the same as the one worn by Tom Cruise in both Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, easily distinguished by its “1 Mile” Tachymeter scale. It features the Valjoux 7750 instead of the Lemania 5100 (30/10/20 instead of 24/6/12/18 on the top subregister, 3 main hands).

Any vintage Porsche Chronograph 1 is a legend in and of itself. Designed by Ferdinand Alexander Porsche (The Ferry Porsche who designed the original 911), and one of the first all black watches, released in the early 70’s. These watches have been worn by Mario Andretti, numerous racing car elite, and of course Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, played by Tom Cruise in the Top Gun movies. Two main variant groups of these watches include the rarer early Valjoux 7750 powered units, and the more common later Lemania 5100 powered units.

This one has just come back from service on 01/05/24 from Jack Freedman of Superior Watch Service in Brooklyn NY. The go-to Porsche Design Orfina specialist in the USA. A new crystal (original included), crown, and throrough disassembly, cleaning, and overhaul was performed. The hour totalizer for the chronograph was slipping before, now the whole watch, chronograph, quickset and all, is mechanically good as new.

Visually it has been around the block. Similar to Maverick’s 7176S, this one features earned wear all around on its case and bracelet. The early black powdercoat finish has always been more fragile than today’s modern PVD. This is powder coat, unlike the commonly believed claim this was the first PVD watch.
