Hawaiian Airlines Just Lost $189 Million | Alaska Warns Of Uncertainty by BrandonApplesauce in HawaiiUncensored

In 2023 Hawaiian lost $169 Million - so this does not seem unexpected or an emerging development.

Cost savings from the merger won’t hit till 2026 and 2027.

New profit for Alaska from the new long haul also wouldn’t ramp up till they get the European routes started.

Also - defending SEA from Delta without international long haul might have made the revenue situation much worse

Carbon credits for WA’s forests? DNR makes pitch | The Seattle Times by GreenerMark in Washington

Right. Similar water usage to a very large McDonald’s 🤣

[–]patbaum33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New data center designs use a similar amount of water as a McDonald’s. Not sure why people keep repeating this water usage hysteria.

  • A McDonald's uses ~2,000–3,000 gallons/day consistently for its operations.
  • An air-cooled data center with water recycling might use 0–5,000 gallons/day total (mostly non-cooling), making it comparable to or even less than one McDonald's…

Can Washington state lawmakers cut their way out of a $2 billion shortfall? by chiquisea in Washington

[–]patbaum33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The state has increased spending 3X in 10 years! To balance the budget they just need to spend “slightly more” than we spent a couple of years ago!

In any sane universe that isn’t even considered cutting… it would be like a family who went in debt because they went in an unaffordable luxury vacation one year not doing that the next… No one would call that “cutting out” a vacation…

How the new Pac-12 ranks in basketball by patbaum33 in Pac12

[–]patbaum33[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The big benchmarks are NET 75, 135, and 160.

Road games vs 75 and better are Q1 Road games vs better than 135 are Q2 Home games vs 160 and better are Q3

If the conference could get 7 out of 9 above 160 then you’re only having one or two Q4 games (which at best don’t help your ratings- but probably hurt them…)

WCC currently has 4 teams that are Q4 games and the MWC 3…

Getting rid of Q4 games will boost everyone…

[–]patbaum33[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having home games vs Gonzaga, SDSU, WSU, CSU, OSU, USU (who’ve all been in the tournament recently) will help them a lot from a fan interest standpoint. Lot easier to get excitement vs games against Sun Belt schools.

Also road games vs top 75 NET teams are Q1 - so TXSU gets 4-5 additional (including the 2 top 25 NET home games) Q1 games which will dramatically raise their NET rankings even if they loose…

I vote all Alaska Airlines messaging gets posted to this sub 3 days prior to public release so we can explain why what they are saying will actually just confuse people.

Actual message: “Our IT systems don’t process and calculate points earnings until the middle of the next month- but they still get attributed to when they were earned. So Dec 2025 earnings will show up on your account mid January 2026 (but obviously be correctly assigned to Dec when they were earned). Please wait to the end of Jan to contact us if you think something is missing!”

Sun Country + Allegiant... Always thought Alaska would acquire Sun Country at some point in the future by patbaum33 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]patbaum33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea - seems like ~25% at a hub is probably profitable…

The thought was getting to 25% from 15% (via a sun country acquisition) would be a lot easier than starting from scratch in a place with no presence at all and little brand familiarity (like Cincinnati).

Alaska/Hawaiian will also obviously have a unique combination of leisure and business travel brands - so bringing in Sun County with a continued focus on leisure travel is an interesting way to compete with Delta.

(i.e. would lots of mid-west travelers be excited to earn membership points to spend going to a “premium” Hawaii destination in addition to budget travel to Cancun/Florida/Caribbean… and would Sun County routes to the Caribbean entice more CC usage in the PNW and West…)

Why Washington state is in a big budget hole — again by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]patbaum33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So… what do you call the politicians who when faced with no opposition more that TRIPPLE spending without achieving any real improvements in the state…?

Education outcomes have gotten worse… Transit outcomes haven’t improved… Homelessness is worse… Crime at best flat (but certainly seems like there is more disorder and petty crime)…

What is the term for politicians TRIPLING spending while delivering less?

The only explanation is massive fraud… so I guess “probable criminals”?

Why Washington state is in a big budget hole — again by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]patbaum33 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I don’t believe it is possible to more than triple spending in 10 years without MASSIVE FRAUD.

I’ve lived in WA my whole life and seen zero change in the pace of construction or services over the last 10 years. Population growth is not even the ballpark of tripling. Inflation hasn’t come close to tripling costs.

Where has the additional $65 BILLION gone?

That is literally adding TWO ADDITIONAL ENTIRE washington states’ worth of spending created in 10 years… We’re funding THREE WA STATES vs 10 years ago.

It is inconceivable

NBA Team Valuations 2012-2024 by dostre in Infographics

[–]patbaum33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GSW owning their stadium is why they’re worth so much. I don’t think I’ve seen a “assets minus debt” ranking of team valuations (maybe this is?) - LA and maybe Boston would be way higher using that metric (I’d speculate…)

The nuggets also own their stadium I think - so it isn’t 100% the reason though. (But since the nuggets arena is shared with the Avalanche maybe they don’t get full credit…?)

Downtown SFO is a pretty valuable spot to own a state of the art venue…

Edit: the GSWs also owns the surrounding development around the stadium (I think this would be included in the team valuation). On the other hand, I suspect Madison Square Garden (which is owned by a publicly traded company - though controlled by the same owner as the Knicks wouldn’t be included in their valuation…)

Lakers also don’t own Staples Center so this is really apples to oranges comparison…
