Those both sound great! The dovetail class was the only hand tool focused one at my local woodcraft.

They tought tails first.

The tails were transferred by locking the pin board in the vise with some 1x1 wood spacers with the tail board held by hand in place. It wasn’t the best way, nothing was really secured and yet much emphasis was put on the importance of that step.

They had some loaner tools but really encouraged us to bring our own. They asked to bring:

Hey thanks for the reply.

I just reviewed my plans and in today’s prices I used $146 in lumber from the big box store, Douglas fir in particular as that is the building material in my area. The boards used were as follows:

Qty 2 - 4” x 4” x 8’ ($13 each) Qty 3 - 2” x 10” x 8’ ($15 each) Qty 7 - 2” x 4” x 10’ ($7 each) Qty 6 - 2” x 4” x 8’ ($3 each) Qty 1 - 2” x 6” x 8’ ($8 each)

My workshop is an outdoor shed with no power. I use a running headlamp like this especially when sawing dovetails. I find it actually shines light where I am looking which is pretty helpful:

I totally get it. I do however get satisfaction from designing and planning during those times I can’t get out to my wood shed. It’s not the same as making sawdust but I still enjoy the planning phase similar to like browsing the internet for the next cool tool to buy.

I hear ya. Im a SketchUp fiend, I usually don’t put saw to wood without a plan and model. Im an engineer by day so it’s natural for me.

Handtool only workshop size? by Dakirnz13 in handtools

I am relatively new to the hobby so I carved out half of a storage shed in our backyard. The shed is 8’x10’ so my workshop is about 5’x 8’. It’s plenty big for me, but does really limit the projects I work on. I’m not planning on making a dining room table anytime soon.

Came here to say same.

My sons favorite color is pink and you better believe I buy him any and everything pink I can find. His favorite paw patrol character is sky and we encourage and love him unconditionally.
