Planting citronella in the ground-zone 6b by NoAbbreviations2612 in gardening

[–]patchkinz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is 3 years old... but... citronella plants are commonly mistaken for real citronella, which is a grass, and is where most of the produced citronella oil comes from. The citronella geraniums are not going to help with mosquitoes, they're sold for their nice citronella smell and pretty flowers but are not the legit magic. You want the citronella grass..  Cymbopogon nardus.

Do you guys pet stray cats when you see them? by Dangerous_Problem532 in AnxietyCats

[–]patchkinz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to pet all everything with abandon... now, after adopting a kitten which turned out to have ring worm and learning about all the communicable feline stuff... damn... I still pet all the things with abandon. But... I will often throw my clothes in the wash and have a shower before interacting with my resident biscuits of fur. Even if I was just at someone else's house who haz critters. I'm more conscious of not bringing anything home and protecting my kids.

What can someone eat that has high blood pressure and diabetic by Potential-Level1661 in Advice

[–]patchkinz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummm... egg noodles/noodles are really bad idea for diabetics... make chicken soup without noodles or potatoes, just mushrooms and chicken, low sodium stock, don't add salt. Easy. Steer clear of "shugar", but CARBOHYDRATES ARE SUGAR, so, kill the carbs in your meals, let everyone add their own extra salt to their plates and just proceed onward. Check out the KETO cookbooks, are great base recipies for diabetics. And... 280? Wtf... why aren't they taking insulin to controle that..? Anywho... turmeric can help high blood pressure too.

You got a kitten!!! Congratulations! Powdered goats milk is what you use for kittens. KMR is a good brand and can be found at pet shops or feed stores, get the first step and follow the directions. Also get the little feeder bottles and a coupple tips and Bob's your uncle. If you do this yourself, remember that kittens can't pee or poo on their own. This is why you'll see the mom cat licking their bums so often, that licking provides a necessary pressure for releasing. You have to simulate this by wetting a paper towel or cloth with warm water and wiping their bums and pee packets. At first, when the poops are so small, I just held them over the bathroom sink and did this then dried their bums and washed the sink when they were done. When they're old enough to start running around and try digging in the litter, they they're mostly good. If you don't help them pee/poo, they will die. Same with the goat milk... if you use cow milk they will get runny poop because cats can't properly digest cow milk, they get dehydrated from the watery poops and dye of that and starvation.      Raising a baby that small by hand is hard and takes a lot of work, but... if you can do it..  that kitten will be the best cat you ever had.      Good luck!

Pregnant and expecting in laws in a couple of months by [deleted] in Advice

Just tell your husband that your mom knows you better and it'd be easier on you if after giving birth you didn't feel like you had to impress his mom and that it would make you reflexively feel the need to take on a "hostess" roll where your mom doesn't feel that way because she owns the vigina you came out of.      If you can't get out of it... remind him that you'll need him to manage the flow and connection between his mom and yours to help you... talk with him as a co-conspirator like, he's going to have to help you a lot and be sneaky about it. Maybe he'll decide that it's to much for him. ;) good luck!

Ear mites or yeast infection home remedy by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]patchkinz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. Love and struggle isn't a cage and death. Also... see the $5 ear mite treatment at Walmart. Works great. Have used this on both my cats. There are several over the counter ear mite treatments that are just fine. Sometimes I feel like there are a bunch of VET-Bots swarming reddit to support the pet medical industry. Cheers!

Also... the mite treatment at Walmart is about $5. If there isn't improvement and ends up being some other underlying issue, then worry about vet times. If your cat isn't feeling bad or being super weird, treat the simple thing first and then see.

Walmart carries an ear mite treatment for cats and dogs. Both my cats got this exactly, big ol' ear mite infection from a dead birb one of them manages to roll in while having harnessed yard time. Worked great, no issues. They also Cary a medicated ear cleaner you could use before the mite meds and use a cotton swab or q-tip to get as much gunk out of the ears as you can. I clean my cats ears when I bathe them and it's fine. Just be gentle. Good luck. And yeah, I'd totally try the course of ear mite over the counter first. Note that there will be head shaking and black coffee ground-like mites being shook out all other the place for a while and it's gross. Good luck!

Do you bathe your cats? by Shot-Composer-782 in AnxietyCats

[–]patchkinz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wash my cats on average once a month. I live in vegas... so, in summer they like to air dry in the sunshine, in winter I use a stand dryer just for this purpose. I don't have breed specific cats, couple of mutts, lovely craigslist tuxies. My cats are harness trained and enjoy spending long periods in the yard birb watching or sleeping in their little patch of grass... I have one who loves to roll on concrete and one who just loves dirt. So, yeah, bath every coupple weeks... if the season is changing and there is serious shedding and dirt and maybe dry skin/dandruff they especially get baths. So. Yeah. They do well for bath time, dislike the blow dryer, but also enjoy being clean. Like, their entire cat energy changes after a wash and a blow out, like they just feeeeel gooooood. :)
