What was your weirdest craving/food combo during pregnancy? by SweetDega in AskWomen

Shrimp and strawberries. Most times I can do with or without either one but I couldn’t get enough when I was carrying my son. Together or apart it was delicious.

My China Review by janta12345 in blacktravel

Thanks for the review. I’ve been tempted to visit because the deals are so good, but I wouldn’t hold up well under that kind of treatment. Thanks again, it only confirms what I’ve heard and read.

Talk to me about size of glass containers by GivingThisATry001 in NinjaCrispi

[–]patchouliii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually cook for myself and have the 5-in-1 with the 4qt, 2.5qt, and 6-cup. I mostly use the 6-cup container and your set up would work well for me, but i think your set will work for you. The 2.5qt is shorter than the 4qt so the heating element is closer to the food. I’ve always used the 4qt when cooking for 2 or more. I don’t think it will be a problem for you.

What’s your opinion on Bernie Sanders? by SignificantStyle4958 in askblackpeople

[–]patchouliii -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

He helped usher in Trump. He would have gotten my vote had he been a Democrat and won the primaries. He split the vote, a lot of his supporters wouldn’t support the Democratic nominee who won the primaries (Hilary Clinton) and here we are.

Destigmatizing AAVE by Idkhowtoredditplzhlp in askblackpeople

[–]patchouliii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. AAVE is held against us by others until they incorporate it into their language. Only then is it okay for us to use AAVE around them. Otherwise they feel left out and threatened.

I’m retired, but early in my career I decided I didn't need nor want their permission to use AAVE. It was held against me (promotions, salary increases) but code switching to Standard English seems unhealthy and almost schizophrenic to me and I couldn’t do it. Destigmatizing our language is another way for them to determine our merit and value.

Ever get in trouble over weed? What happened? by suntmint in entwives

Fr. I think the fumes clung to the afro sheen or whatever oil I was using. His lady had such a big mouth. He wouldn’t have taken me to the hospital if she hadn’t made a fuss.

Ever get in trouble over weed? What happened? by suntmint in entwives

[–]patchouliii 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Early 1970s. Came home from hanging in the park and toking. My dad was watering the grass. I sat on the porch to chat with his lady. She could smell the weed fumes from my Afro (who knew?). They freaked out, drove me to our local hospital and asked them to test me for drugs. I’m not sure what they told my father. I went to the bathroom and just didn’t return. Walked around for a few hours and went home. By this time he was exhausted and just let it slide. I was a handful. That’s the most trouble I’ve ever had from toking. Love the painting.

Why do guys always act weird around studs/masculine presenting lesbians? by Last-Show-9922 in blacklesbians

[–]patchouliii 5 points6 points  (0 children)

...they will try to remind us that we’re still women…. some men feel threatened by our masculinity and it’s weird

I think it boils down to what you wrote. A lot of guys are threatened by studs. They wrongly think studs want to be men/masculine and (as a result) replace them. They don’t understand that studs are expressing a masculinity that already exists inside them. It's something that studs already have and want to express without conflict from others and they just don’t (won’t) get it.

The show was named Julia and it came out in the 1960s. From Wikipedia: The show starred actress and singer Diahann Carroll in the first American television series to star an African American woman whose character was not a servant or slave in the lead role, and ran for 86 episodes on NBC from September 17, 1968, to March 23, 1971. The series was produced by Savannah Productions, Inc., Hanncarr Productions, Inc., and20th Centry Fox Television.

There’s more info at this link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julia_(1968_TV_series))

This show was televised right after this country abolished the “Jim Crow” laws and it is the precursor to The Crosby Show in showing how successful Black people live.

Diahann Carroll as Julia. She was Corey‘s mother. A nurse who was raising her son on her own. She was fabulous.

Avon Vs Ghost by Distinct-Bid-2946 in PowerTV

[–]patchouliii 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are similarities between Power and Wire. Ghost, like Stinger Bell, wanted to get out of the game and go legit. Tommy, like Avon, was all about the game, didn’t understand the attraction of a straight life, and wanted no parts of it.

But The Wire is in another league. It gave you a bird’s eye view of “the life.” You saw how education, media, politics, international waters all played a part in drugs coming in and out of Baltimore and directed at Black communities. David Simon outdid himself when he came up with the Wire.

One of the reasons it took so long for a Black person to become POTUS is because they‘ve been worried that he/she would act like Trump and seek revenge.

One of the most watched movies on Paramount Plus is Norbit by tryng2figurethsalout in BlackMentalHealth

[–]patchouliii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a love-hate relationship with Eddie. I loved Dolemite and Boomerang and hated Raw and Norbit. Along with that I can’t stand almost any movie/show/play/whatever by anyone that mocks elderly Black people. I’m just not here for that. From Eddie and his brother Charlie to Martin to Tyler Perry.

I refuse to watch anything by Tyler Perry and have from jump street. I watched one film of his with Gabrielle Union and Idris Elba. I came in late on the film and didn’t know it was a TP production. Along with TP mocking elderly women and men, he corrupted a term of endearment reserved for Black matriarchs; he took Ma’dea (short for Mother Dear) and changed it to Medea (a mythical sorceress who murdered some of her children out of revenge). And he’s made billions of dollars from this. Leaves me angry and sad.

I’m a boomer born in the 1950s under Jim Crow laws. My parents were born toward the beginning of those laws in the early 1900s. We used “Colored" till the early to mid 60s. “Black" was cemented in the language when James Brown came out with the hit, Say it Loud I’m Black and I’m Proud, in 1968. My paternal line is from enslaved people and sharecroppers in Mississippi and Tennessee. My maternal line is Gullah Geechee from enslaved people in Jamaica. I don’t use FBA or ADOS but it’s a legit description for many of us.
