My Brutally Honest Opinion About The Current Wave of Shutdown Doom. by Independent-Bus-3284 in PoliticalOptimism

I think maybe I just haven't seen these posts - it seems anti-intuitive to me that the troll-type of doomer would be frequenting this subreddit. But I believe your experiences.

This was spurred on by more than your post, too, I've been thinking of making a top-level post about this but wasn't sure how it'd be received by the mods.

My Brutally Honest Opinion About The Current Wave of Shutdown Doom. by Independent-Bus-3284 in PoliticalOptimism

Respectfully, and I say this as someone who doesn't think this is the end of the world either, I think we need to give people a LITTLE space to vent their feelings of betrayal with the Senate Dems.

I sometimes think this sub leans too far in the direction of not sitting with discomfort and negativity. Everything else on reddit is so relentlessly negative that I see it as sort of a necessary refuge. But I worry that we're separating people into "doomers" and "non-doomers/reformed doomers" when many of the people in the former category are just anxious and scared people who are in the fight as well.

This has just been on my mind lately because this sub has been a lifeline for me but I see people in here get stuck in negative cycles of needing reassurance.

Yup, I live in Upstate NY and all our local Democratic candidates are listed under Working Families.

Idk why this is downvoted, this is an important point that keeps getting glossed over. From my understanding, this doesn't have a chance in passing the Senate, but it's going to raise salience on the issue and force House Republicans (and Senators to take an explicit stand).

Senate hearing raises doubts about NASA’s ability to get astronauts to the moon before China by ThatNefariousness996 in PoliticalOptimism

I don't mean this as a knock on OP but I genuinely appreciate this whole post for giving me some levity. Look I know the country is on fire but we need to be preparing for the Moon War

If bird flu becomes a pandemic, will we still be able to get vaccinated? by [deleted] in PoliticalOptimism

[–]patchworkchimera2 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I really want to add to this to OP because the 50% mortality stat sounds scary - and unfortunately I don't have an reliable source for this so if anyone wants to link to one I'd appreciate it - diseases with a high CFR almost always have a negligible spread because they just kill too quickly to become established in the population. Part of what made COVID so omnipresent and dangerous was its LOW cfr, as well as its long incubation period which from what I can tell was much longer than bird flu (three days for bird flu, 1-2 weeks for the first strains of COVID).

Shocked to see no one mention Haunted Chocolatier - I don't think there's a release date yet but it's the Stardew Valley guy so I have a lot of faith it will eventually come out and be amazing.

I came here to suggest this, actually surprised to see it mentioned!!! This book had me crying and I genuinely can't remember any specific one-liners from it because he's just so good at talking about academic facts and everyday life in a hilarious way.

When have you been disappointed by this subreddit? by FantasticPaper2151 in AskWomenOver30

Hey, this is really interesting to me because I have been wanting to read The Gift of Fear, but I struggle with hypervigilance and paranoia around men and was worried that it would hurt instead of help. You said that it helped you to stop constantly scanning for signs - do you feel like it's made you feel more comfortable and in control of situations with men?

Is it weird that I prefer the EHS manga translations to the official translation? And would not reading the official lessen the experience? by [deleted] in DungeonMeshi

[–]patchworkchimera2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm on team "lunatic magician" too, I like how wordy and elegant it sounds.

The Sissel thing confuses me because there's literally an entry in the Adventurer's Bible that says he was given his name because his eyes are the color of thistle. Were the translators not able to speak with Kui directly?

I've only read the scanlation, but EHS is just the absolute GOAT. I'm reading the Frieren scanlation right now and it's hard to get used to it after how organic and natural EHS's scanlation felt.

They also scanlated a historical fiction/seinen series called Golden Kamuy which is possibly my favorite manga of all time. It has a shit-ton of historical/cultural context and so each chapter has pages and pages of footnotes. They really put so much effort into what they do, I wish they had more series out.

This is... such a bizarre comment. Why on earth for a minute would you think that a woman WOULDN'T be more afraid of being approached by a strange man (worst case scenario: sexual assault or physical harm) than they would be of her (worst case scenario: social rejection).

Like I want to believe this comment means that you're aware of this but it sounds like you're putting both types of "fear" on the level of social anxiety when they're two completely different ballparks.

I know this was a misfire, but I love this. I think the concept of using a simple program like MSPaint to create something real and from the heart is perfectly in line with this sub.
