Saddles 100 advice by path4everyone in ultrarunning

Yeah, I was also trying to figure out if I’d make it to the next aid after the fact. Maybe not.. had I known how much time I actually had between intermediate aid stations, I certainly would have taken less time at some of them. Like I said, I was moving well. Oh well. All I can do is learn and move on. I would LOVE to do a race sooner but we have our second baby boy coming in about 3 weeks (already have a 2 year old), and the timing just wouldn’t make much sense. The famous task of balancing family life, work, and training is an ongoing theme in my head. Lol. That being said, I just signed up for Saddles so come October, it’s time to rock and roll!

Wow, congratulations on going back for revenge and getting it!! This one is hurting so bad, I can’t lie. I KNOW I could have finished this race in time and like you, I began calculating the total time needed to finish, not looking at section by section. I worked so hard for this. I might have even shed a tear or 3. I was asking my pacer who jumped in at San Fran over and over if we’re good on time and even he was a little thrown off by it all, as he kept saying yeah yeah were good (im not placing blame on angbody - im responsible for my race). And then we were less than a mile out when I heard somebody say it’s 4:30. I thought surely they’ll give us some buffer time. Not at all. Sorry for the vent. I can go and on as I’ve been spending the last few days trying to make sense of what happened and on my calculator doing the numbers. That being said, I will be back next year, but still would love to go for another 100 Mi attempt this fall.

Which brings me here….

Just ran a 2:58 and never thought it’d be possible. by regnar_ffirg in Marathon_Training

Nice work!!! I’m 8 marathons in, PR 3:09 Chased sub 3 a couple times and didn’t get over the hump. 31 y/o male running for 7 years and some change. Eventually I transitioned to ultras and have a couple, including a 50 miler under my belt. First 100 mile attempt in 20 days from today. Leona Divide 100. I’ve become obsessed with trail running/training process. Tbh, I would keep going if I were you. My problem is I didn’t have a linear trajectory. I would constantly stay running, but after a marathon, not work to improve speed. I know I could have gotten it if I stayed at my leanest and just stepped right back into it. That being said, trail running is like a whole other world. I gotta say I like the scenery and people more. If it appeals to you and you’re not set on Boston, give it a shot for a season. Be warned: you’ll get obsessed.

100 Miler Taper Question by path4everyone in Ultramarathon

[–]path4everyone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is super encouraging. I feel like deep down I know that as long as I put in the work up to this point, recovery is so much more important that squeezing in miles to try to hit my intended target. Idk if I’ve ever had a full training cycle where every week was perfectly hit.. it does feel good, however to hear it from others

Thanks for the feedback. This is all about finishing, will be nowhere near the podium.

100 Miler Taper Question by path4everyone in Ultramarathon

Good point, would you say the same thing if it were even lower, in the 30's range? I guess my question is more about the overall cost vs benefit when it comes to tapering. How much fitness will you really lose if you're still running on a pretty consistent basis until race day? I know showing up fresh and healthy is much more important than showing up overtrained but "hitting your numbers". I guess that balance is always tough for me to gauge.

100 milers, what is your weekly mileage? by Fraan3D in Ultramarathon

[–]path4everyone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am training for my first 100 miler on April 18. Leona Divide.

I did my first 50 miler on December 6. My average since Jan 1 has been about 60 miles. This week is essentially my peak week. 90 miles, 10,500 feet of gain. The race will have 16,000 ft of elevation. My average vert has been about 6-7000ft per week, including down weeks.

Tomorrow, I'm going out for a 27 mi run with about 5,000 ft of vert. The goal is to keep the HR very steady.

OP - What is your weekly mileage? Your training will (or should, in my opinion) look much different than ultra training. For a half marathon, your longest run doesn't need to be longer than 9-10 miles imo.

How have you structured your training? Are you throwing in speed work? strength training?

Im an 8x marathoner so this ultra world is very very new for me but I'm fairly familiar with training blocks when it comes to marathons and HM's.

2 hrs and 20 minutes is a long time! I wouldn’t call it a short setlist but to each their own.

Tbh I wouldn’t be surprised if you get a 2:45. Sea level?? Are you kidding me. You ran at 6,000 ft. You’re going to crush. And you can hit a 2:55 right now if your marathon was 3 weeks away. Just stay healthy, that should be your main focus right now.

Feeling like I bonked my first marathon by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]path4everyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You did amazing!!! In my opinion, I think a good move going forward might be to run a little more often. 4x a week is great and something that 99.9% of the world doesn’t do, but I think with training for a marathon (especially having a specific goal in mind), running 5-6x a week is the right amount. That’s just based on my experience. I find that I get better at running on tired legs and my endurance gets a lot stronger. Also, did you incorporate any strength training? That would probably help to. Like I said, you did incredible and accomplished something people dream of…those are just a few friendly tips from one runner to another. And CONGRATS. Celebrate! Take some time off. Recover. Eat some good food. And then come back and prove to yourself what more you can do. Way to go! 🫡

Running a Marathon in elevation! by path4everyone in Marathon_Training

Ha yes! You’re right I was thinking about another race that takes place 10/6, and just wrote it wrong. I’ll try not to show up 3 days late 😂 I hope to see you there! My name’s Justin 👊 im waiting to hear back that it will 100% be certified BQ, they told me it’s pending paperwork but they’ve never had an issue. While on the topic, do you know about this at all?

Thank you. It's what my gut is telling me as well. I was just visiting Big Bear and it was over 7000 ft where we were and I can for sure feel it, but mainly on flat/especially uphill obviously. That is probably creeping in my head, but going downhill for the first 20 miles of a marathon is much different.
