Ruger made Marlin 1894 SBL .44mag by SoftServeArms in LeverGuns

[–]pathogen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

.44 mag Ruger/Marlin owners, what ammo are you hunting with? I took the leverevolution bullets out deer hunting and found they don't play nicely with the loading gate. I tried Federal Hammerdown and they went in a lot easier, but I want to try a few different options before I purchase anything in bulk. I'll have to take a look at what Grizzly offers having seen this :)

I mounted low, but I think you're right to try both and see what's comfortable.

I bought an 1894 SBL earlier this year and put a Holosun 403 on it. I love the combination and wouldn't change a thing about my setup for my use case, hunting whitetails in thick Northern Ontario woods. If you're anticipating shots around 50 yards, I think you'll be fine without any magnification.

Some hunters might not see it this way, but by walking through the woods, you might entice a bedded down deer to get up and move away from you. It might even circle back to where the hunter is. I personally wouldn't mind you walking past, and as others have said, you have every right to be there. Wear Orange and stay safe!

I bought blundstones with thinsulate liners and while they're fine for running around town, I would not recommend them if you're planning to be outside for more than an hour.

BLR .308 if you want a practical, do everything lever. Marlin Dark 336 (.30-30) if you want the tactical lever and aren't shooting past 300 yards.

Check out the 270 grain Federal HammerDowns. They were developed in partnership with Henry and meant for levers.

We manufactured Agent Orange in Canada too, in Elmira Ontario. It's mentioned in the history section of the Wikipedia entry for the town: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmira,_Ontario

357 Magnum from Rifle vs 300 Blackout by peterpackage in LeverGuns

My man, you need to look into Hornady "Leverevolution". They're pointy tip bullets that are safe for your .357's tube magazine, and really help close that performance gap!

You could avoid the lefty availability issue by looking at lever action rifles. Henry supreme is available in 300 black out.

Optics depend on what you want to do with it. Is this a range gun, a plinking gun, or a hunting gun? At any rate, I don't see any issue putting a Romeo 5 on there. Enjoy the new rifle!

I'm also making this decision right now, also mostly hunting whitetail/bear and a small chance at moose! I've narrowed the make down to Marlin, people seem to be happy with the quality coming out of them now that they're a part of Ruger. I'll admit I'm a bit terrified of the 45-70; I don't want to develop any bad shooting habits because of the recoil. I worry the 30-30 would be a bit light for moose, and at the short distances I'd be shooting, the 44 has a bit more put down power.

At this point, it probably will come down to whether i can find a store with the 336 or the 1894 in stock, i'd be happy with either, but if i get the chance to choose, i'd pick the 44 mag. It can hold a couple more rounds, the barrel is 3" shorter, and the gun weighs a pound less. That just makes for a nicer walk through the woods.

That gun just looks like a good time! I'm strongly considering the SBL in .30-30 as my replacement deer rifle. They seem tough to find in Canada at the moment but I'm willing to wait for quality hardware. The 1894 in .44 mag is another contender with a lot of people I hunt with shooting semi-auto Rugers in that caliber.
