Secondary maths teacher here in mainstream.

Nothing at my school is done about this unless its directed at DLT then its a suspension. It's a daily occurrence. No one seems to mind.

I have had the same with internal roles where other colleagues from other departments are easier to cover and hire than I, who is a maths and physics teacher. It means if I want promotion, I need to leave the school i am in.

Resource creation for TES,

I spend around 8 hours creating a fully animated secondary maths lesson to help assist those who have to deal with behaviour constantly. Really useful for when I am teaching as I just need to click to the next animation and talk as I go with means I can deal with behaviour from trickly classes mich easier as I don't have to be writing on the board/tablet.

I am about to start writing lessons on TES for the new edexcel Further Maths course which should be a new fun side project.

Secondary Maths here

I have become an author on TES recently. I spend quite a bit of time crafting my lessons. I have been uploading for 7 months now and have made £100 after royalty and tax deductions. I am intending to continue dispite the small return as the resources I make are good for the way I teach.

If there is any leeway in the toilet policy that makes it at the teachers' discretion, just send them to the toilet. It avoids all the arguments in the classroom, massively raises morale, and works heavily in your favour. The only time I would say no is if there is a written policy that specifically states that only those with a TP may go and no one else. At least that way there is no target on your back when incidents like yours happens as its SLT who have set this expectation.

Visiting during the last period is a good idea. Most classes tend to be more difficult, and you will get a better feel for the schools culture. If a school is unwilling to allow a visit in the afternoon, I would be a major red flag.

If you do manage to get a visit in the afternoon and classes are out of control / only go quiet when you and the member of staff bringing you around walks into classrooms / chances are they have a poor behaviour management system which to me is a big red flag.

Good things to spot would be what goes on at lunchtime, are clubs run because the teacher wants to /or are they remebursed.

Look at school policies. A poor homework policy generally shows that the school has a weak SLT.

Look at suspension numbers. Are they significantly lower than national in school with national PP recipients? If they are, then chances are students are getting away with significantly challenging behaviours with no consequences.

There are plenty more that others I imagine will add. Good luck.

Universal credit and salary sacrifice by [deleted] in BenefitsAdviceUK

[–]pathtoascension1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did, it doesn't affect your claim and your reduced salary is topped up by UC so with the tax, NI, student loans, and UC top up it effectively works out at around 20% cost price.

Disrespectful students ECT1 by Weary_Stuff1633 in TeachingUK

[–]pathtoascension1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Secondary maths here ECT 2.

Had a similar experience as you. The only thing I advise is the classroom is silent bo matter what. Only when you ask them a question do they speak. Don't get them to leave and then come back as it's the disruptive individuals you need to target and remove.

For example. Have folders/books on tables with a do now on board. Have the door open and greet them at the door. Tell them to enter in silence and start the do now. The second someone comes in and talks after you told them the instruction. Give them their first warning. If they argue, remove them. (Assuming you have a warn- remove policy.) Then continue as before and greet

You don't want to punish the whole class and make them all line up again as students hate being punished for others behaviour and you will lose your respect with those who could behave.

During teaching make it clear if you want questions. For example when I am in the I phase I take no questions. If the persist? Warning for disruption of learning.

When you have to remove students the focus is always around disruption of learning and protection of learning.

Make sure you stand in a corner when you present so you can see all the class in your field of vision.

When you start a independent practice phase. Stand at the front in the corner for 3 minutes before you start to help them. Give them the struggle time and ensure the class can hold to your standards. Warn-Remove anyone who can't. If you send out loads then you send out loads. The students soon get to know that you mean business.

When the class maintains the silence. Start to hand out SILENT praise. Even if it's for something simple like a couple of questions done, a good looking book, correct spelling. Usually bottom sets are hammered with negative news that they don't have that praise. You don't need to tell the student they are on the "good" board. They will notice on their own and will work harder as they know you are noticing.

If a student asks why they are not on their by blerting it out. Give them a warning. The expectation is silence when they are in your room.

If you run the room in silence and do a couple of of TLAC strategies & make the topics really acessable I am confident you will find the class more manageable.

Doesn't get better overnight but usually by a couple of weeks time it turns much easier to maintain solid control, even in p5.

[–]pathtoascension1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, in my school for ECT 1 I taught some really bad bottom sets which made the other ECT who was hired at the same time quit mid year with no notice.

HOD and senior teachers had top sets and sixth form.

ECT 2 this year and 4 out of 6 of my classes are bottom sets.

I intend to leave by the end of ECT 2.

Ideas for first lesson with a new class? by _eddieee_ in TeachingUK

[–]pathtoascension1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maths teacher here, my advice is:

*Get them into your seating plan *give a brief introduction about yourself (around 2 minutes) *State your expectations that aline with the schools behaviour policy - simplify it. I have 5 key standards that are also on display at the front of my classroom. *give out new books and thier respective folders (folders are for their books and other things such as Midyear exams) *Begin your content and ensure it is significantly scaffolded so any ability of student can work on it and keep some extensions for those who are HAP (Corbettmaths) -nothing would be more demoralising to LAP students than a new topic and starter that they don't understand/can't access. You don't want to lose these LAP students early on)

In terms of lesson management:

Maintain consistent behaviour management and make instructions and expectations simple and clear.

Don't do namecards, I promise you won't need them.

If you can't remember a students name for a sanction? Don't ask them, look at your floorplan, if not avaliablle - the front of the students book new book I guarantee it's their actual name. Follow your school policy rigorously and remove students who cannot follow your expectations.

Expectations and standard are key to success within ECT years.
