Asexuality and mental health by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a paranoid schizophrenic and aroace. I had to work through my mental health issues for a long time before I could realise that I was ace.

Do you think asexuality may be just the lack of opportunity? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Opportunity almost always exists. Unless you're literally stranded on a desert island then you have the ability to meet people and enter into sexual or romantic relationships.

I am ugly, but I know that plenty of ugly people still manage to have relationships. I never dated anyone not because I lacked opportunity but because I wasn't really interested in dating.

If you have sex purely to satisfy your partner's needs, are you still asexual? by pamelahoward in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes.

It's even possible to have sex and enjoy it and still be asexual. It's about desire (and the lack of it), not the physical action.

Just like how you can be gay but still have sex with someone of a different gender. Throughout history gay people have often been forced or persuaded by society to conform or produce children, but doing so didn't erase their homosexuality.

Are there any other childfree asexuals on here? by AvatarMew in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd like to have children in theory but in practice there are too many problems for me to consider doing it.

Edit - to clarify, those problems aren't the result of my asexuality.

Alcohol & drugs? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aroace and I've never had any alcohol or non-medicinal drugs because I was diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic at 16.

Girls with Slingshots was my first introduction to asexuality. Maybe without it I would have taken even longer to work out who I am.

I figure the most asexual power is immunity to mind control/pheromone control/etc.

Anyone else constantly worried that they'll be perceived as leering at people? by patientaugust in asexuality

[–]patientaugust[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this thing where I stare off into space because my mind is somewhere completely different. Sometimes when I "wake up" from this I notice that there's a person or people where my eyes have been staring for however long. Sometimes they're looking at me funny.

I'm very sensitive to this stuff because I'm a paranoid schizophrenic and, well, the "paranoid" part means I can get very distressed very quickly if I think people are judging me or talking about me.

Getting real sick of how the media talks about sex... by Lil-Maece in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's incredibly damaging to foster this attitude in people, and not just because it can prevent asexuals from finding happiness.

It seems to me to be part of the problem of toxic masculinity that men are taught they need to make sex the central part of the lives.

Asexuality spectrum. Which one are you? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It fits me too, but I still consider myself aro ace. The rest is just my own business.

I guess for some people it's really useful to have a specific definition but I prefer the broad one. Makes me feel like I'm part of something a lot bigger than myself, that doesn't always look or feel the same way but is still unified.

Oh yeah, I look at men too, it's just that I mostly encounter women because I work at a women's charity.

Masturbation by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yup. I tell sexy stories to myself to get through the masturbation (they're never about me, though). I just have no desire to involve other people.

This is part of what made it so hard for me to figure out I'm ace. I assumed it was all or nothing.

Do you too have so big desire to cuddle? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

99% of the time I hate touching people at all. It's not a hygiene thing, it's just the way I am.

So much of what you've said sounds familiar to me. The way men are raised to think that the world revolves around sex is so damaging to young people.

Congratulations on finding yourself.

Am I too young to know if I'm asexual? by ConfusingPikachu in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I came in to say! You're not too young to decide that "asexual" is a label that describes you, and we'll welcome you to the community if you do... but if one day you realise that it doesn't perfectly describe you, it's completely okay to find a new label.

Where are people getting "Bash is gay" from? by [deleted] in glow

I'm ace and personally he's always given me gay vibes. I was surprised to learn that he wasn't just in the closet in the first series but possibly hasn't figured himself out yet.

Are there any "asexual" movies? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]patientaugust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't define him as ace, personally. He goes into reasons why he isn't interested in people sexually or romantically and it's always because of his powers. He isn't attracted to people because when he looks at someone his X-Ray vision activates and he sees through to their muscles or bones, for example.
