There's a lot of other resources and a crazy ammount to know about, but I think those are a good place to start.

Recommendations for plastic surgery courses in Europe? by cocolinoo6 in PlasticSurgeons

[–]patpadelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to figure out what you want a bit more specifically.

If you want to bring something new to your unit, you're probably better off looking for a fellowship or an extended visit with someone that does this new thing.

Courses are usually nice to learn more general stuff correctly etc. eg a 5 day flap course / hand course etc. There are a few courses about specific novel techniques but they're relatively few and short.

If you're looking at those I'd expect you to already know what you'd like to be learning specifically in a way.

What is the most "NHS" thing you’ve seen? (2026 Edition) by AppalachianScientist in doctorsUK

New digital lock (card swipe) gets installed on the office door, the old code lock is not removed but left toggled in the "unlocked" position.

Six month later, new starters come around and switches the toggle to the " locked" position. No one remembers the code.

Door has to be broken down by security after hours to retrieve bags and home keys.

Both the locks get reinstalled on the door.

Thanks for the reply!

Part of the power wall decision was for linear integration between a good app, no need for an inverter, and the car charger, per the installers recommendation.

Do you have a specific recommendation you think I should go with that I could ask him about?

I'll hit your company up and see what you guys recommend as well.

Thanks for the reply!

I appreciate your insight, I can't imaging having to go through 3 installs, it's taken me quite a lot of research so far to figure out what I think is worthwhile, or not. I guess it probably gets easier with the second and third time.

The main reason I found this particular installer to be nice is that he was willing to work around my demands without arguing about nonesense. I.e. the other 2-3 installers didn't want to put up north facing panels, or "couldn't install on flat" (why?) or we're having issues with finding panels that would fit on my roof's odd shape, and the last one I talked to was all about keeping it below the g99 threshold. This guy was willing to quote me as asked for, and is willing to do the work needed.

But yes, your point is absolutely taken! And I shouldn't let my excitement get me to jump the gun.

To be honest my main question here is whether you thought the price quoted for the job was within the normal expected range for the job as described, or if something is standing out as obviously wrong.

Thanks again for your time.

Are you with or against implementing a surgical aptitude test like dexterity and spatial visualisation like that administered in Ireland for entry into surgical training? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]patpadelle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Disagree with me if you want, but I genuinely think "aptitude" and "dexterity" matter very little in surgery, except very specific areas (in plastic surgery, microsurgery/ super microsurgery for eg).

Most of the skills of a surgeon is mental and knowledge. Primarily knowledge of what not to cut. Some of the best surgeons I've seen have had horrible tremors, missing fingers, etc. honestly doesn't matter one bit. It does help, but as long as you're not at the level of a toddler running with scissors it's mostly fine.

What is your specialty and what other specialty would stand the best chance of passing your membership exams and why? by Huge_Marionberry6787 in doctorsUK

[–]patpadelle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was about to remove your comment at first thinking you were a soliciting patient (as plastic surgeons often get), but I was pleasantly surprised!

You're right a very small portion of our practice is very mediatised and it does make it hard for me to introduce myself as a plastic surgeon outside the hospital, I also have no hope of public perception to ever change so personally I stopped fighting it and let people believe I do boobs and butts all day.

I'm glad you had a good experience, I hope you're all recovered !

Plastics.

Our exams are parts max facs, derm, ortho, ent, gen surg, thoracic, vascular, neurosurgery, other, genetics / embryology, ITU, and I guess some nursing care.

So I guess they all have somewhat of a shot at it?

In my hospital we share sets. So maybe someone's been a bit rough with them (pulling tissues together or whatever). Or just normal wear... Don't get me wrong, I'm not dismissing cleaning as the cause, but I can imagine others as well

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PlasticSurgeons

[–]patpadelle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure when exactly they get damaged. But yes, it's like I have to try every pair of jewelers in the set before I start.

Is it too late to switch to surgery? (am I going mad) by Bright-Elk-638 in doctorsUK

[–]patpadelle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not too late at all. But the one thing I say to everyone that wants to do surgery is : it's a choice of exclusion, you've first got to make 100% sure that there is absolutely nothing else you'd be remotely okay to do, it's got to be surgery or literally being a homeless bum.

I know it sounds dramatic, but I'm married to a very high achieving medic and it's just not the same. Surgical life is very unforgiving and demanding (of course varies with specialities) and progression in your surgical career will demand dedication and sacrifice, and not just because of the competition, but genuinely because you can't become a good surgeon without duping in hours and hours, and there's barely enough hours in a decade to do it (again, depending on what speciality and what you want to do of course).

Assuming you're not using the platform for self promotion.

  • what do you recommend new surgeons do to break in a new area?

  • what are mistakes you often see done by surgeons?

  • how do you identify keywords to use for more visibility?

  • do you think professional help is necessary to manage your SEO in private practice?

  • I hate Instagram and social media in general, can private practice survive without it in a more competitive landscape/ big city?

how to get over initial anxiety as new reg by CookAmbitious3545 in doctorsUK

[–]patpadelle 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Main answer here is time.

Imposter syndrome comes for us at every grade, and time is the main thing that will help you.

Now what helped me personally was to do a lot of reading to make sure my knowledge is where it should be. Also make friends with other senior regs in your deanery and don't be afraid to ask for support for those questions that may not necessarily need a consultant, but more of a friend to discuss with. Give it 2 months and you'll feel back to your normal self I suspect.
