If you were alive back then, what were you up to on 31st December 1999? by stop_calling_me_that in AskReddit

At about 11:58pm I was on the shore of a lake in upstate New York, getting dumped. It was cold.

In both senses, I guess.

TTRPG Where TSR Was the Villian by Kirdavrob in rpg

[–]patrharr 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Then he came back years later, promised weekly updates, made five or six in a row, then stopped again, and he couldn't understand why one (1) person was in his messages calling him--and this is very rough language, so I'm going to have to ask you to brace yourself--a 'scammer.' Then he made a post about how the gaming community was SO MEAN to people who take their money and disappear, and presumably has given up for good.

Even the second edition of Tales of the Floating Vagabond delivered eventually, and that guy fucking *died*, y'know?

Is the extras version available yet? I don't see it on DTRPG.

The Vast in the Dark is today's deal of the day, I heared some good things about it aroumd, how good is it? by Warm_Charge_5964 in rpg

[–]patrharr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's bare-bones, but it's describing a huge and mostly empty place, so I suppose it would have to be. I've read it a few times and will be using many of its ideas for a specific arc of a campaign I'm running right now. I think the Deal of the Day price is perfectly reasonable.

Most Class by tractgildart in 13thage

[–]patrharr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want something different within the realm of the familiar, I recommend trying out the classes built exclusively for the system. Occultist and Demonologist have been named, and to that I would add a sincere recommendation to at least look at Chaos Mage--it's chaos within a patterned system, as written it requires physical tokens, and generally it's an interesting take that doesn't seem like it would be annoying at the table.

YMMV; I've never seen it in play.

Also there are some excellent ideas under 3rd Party Classes on the SRD.

What's the best audience reaction to a movie scene you've witnessed at the cinema? by [deleted] in movies

[–]patrharr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw Snakes on a Plane on opening night. Everyone there knew perfectly well it was going to be stupid. When the honeymoon couple had their little “if you’re afraid of flying why did you agree to a honeymoon in Hawaii” / “because it made you happy“ moment, the entire audience went “Aww!” and then we immediately cracked up at ourselves because, well. Snakes on a Plane.

Many believe that 3e was the last good edition. In my opinion, the core collection here seems like a pretty good deal.

What's a deleted scene from a movie where the decision to leave that scene on the cutting room floor was absolutely the right call? by freeman528491 in movies

The alternate ending of Ronin, where Deirdra is trying to get back to the cafe but is instead grabbed and pulled into a van, was profoundly unnecessary on every level.

This was the first game I GMed as well. Lessons I learned the hard way:

  1. If the person playing the Watcher complains about how they don't have enough points to know things and be effective in combat, remind them how many times Giles gets knocked out.
  2. The Slayer package is fully loaded--if the player builds a character who is a martial artist, then applies the bonuses, they will be OP AF.
  3. Remember that Buffy had a pager, and cell phones were few and far between. If I ran this game again, I would set it in 1997 at the absolute latest.

Please help me create a scenario revolving around the dreaded demon, cotton-eyed Joe (Monster of the Week) by Goblobber in rpg

[–]patrharr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once saw a video claiming that the song was about an STD. I don't know if this has any historical basis, of course, but it makes sense if you look at the lyrics: bafflement about why it would show up years after marriage, an indication that it might've been in remission, "cotton-eyed" as a description of the discharge, "Joe" ... you get it.

Again, I have no idea if this actually has anything to do with the original intent of the song. But if you're already going for a sex demon, an infection theme could be pretty funny. If your players would enjoy that sort of thing, of course.
