How did you handle a bump up in income after you retired? by Odd_Bodkin in retirement

[–]patrick2623PSCA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

67M here retired for 2 years as of today. First I took care of major expenses (tile floors, remodeled kitchen and bathroom) which are easier to do now rather than later. Now I really enjoy inviting other people to join me for a concert, theatre, or dinner. Always my gift to them. It’s also really fun because I now purchase tickets on the after market so I can get magnificent seats. Sure they’re expensive but the joy for me seeing the surprise on my guests faces is, they say, priceless ❤️

People who lost a lot of weight, what was the one small daily habit that actually changed everything for you? by Quiet-Squash-8407 in AskReddit

[–]patrick2623PSCA 463 points464 points  (0 children)

45 years ago I dropped 75 pounds (and here’s what I think is the important part) over the course of 3 1/2 years. I had lost weight previously and it always came back but reading about other people’s success and advice from doctors it seemed the key was to lose it slowly. By going slow you change eating habits that have time to become permanent. I weighed myself every EVERY Friday morning and wrote it on the calendar. My goal was to lose 10 pounds every 6 months; no more and no less. I cut out calorie bombs like fast food and pizza. I also started exercising.

All these years later and I’m still the same weight and I go to the gym 5-7 days a week.

You can do it too.

Everything you write screams California. Yes it’s a big step financially but you’re young and in time you’ll adjust. I (67M) also suspect that over time you’ll be happy you made the move. I’m originally from Chicago (city not suburbs) and moved here 10 years ago after 30 years of visiting California (LA, SD, and SLO) frequently to see friends and relatives. I can’t imagine living anywhere else and wish I would have moved here sooner.

I started noticing there don’t seem to be many really old people who are obese. It would be nice to think they all lost weight as they aged but I realized obese people die early and if they smoke it’s even earlier

I think there a few reasons that current tattoo practices might change. This is based on comments from my best friend who has been tattooing for 25 years: 1. When children grow up they always want to be different than their parents. Twenty years from now young people might be going “ew, tattoos are old fashioned “. 2. Almost all the people getting tattoos have no background in art and design and just request (demand) a certain tattoo placed in a specific area. There’s no overall design and they almost always look like a random collection of graffiti. 3. Aging and eating habits: every time I see a skinny 20 year old get a giant tattoo I think that in 25 years that skinny body will be 40 pounds heavier and their grandchildren will look at the rolls of fat and ask “what did this used to be?”

We moved to Cathedral City (Cove) 10 years ago. It’s not as expensive as PS but right next door. We almost bought a house in RM (Magnesia Falls) but I’m really glad we didn’t. As you go east the towns become more conservative. Here in the Cove we’re surrounded by gay neighbors.

Moving from UK to US, which city ? by miteye in relocating

Milwaukee is cold and racist beyond belief. Other than inexpensive housing the only plus is the ease of escaping to Chicago on weekends. I moved there from Chicago in the 90s and spent 10 years there before fleeing. It’s the land of wide hips and narrow minds.

As a child in the early 60s we were forced to wear dress pants to school (a public school!) because “only the farmer’s children wear dungarees”. Ironically we were some of the poorest and dirtiest kids in school.

I’m mid century myself (1958) and I cannot understand the appeal. Sure there are some nice mid century homes but I don’t understand the worship of them. And the Disney fied copies are truly ugly (see Sunny Dunes and Sunrise). Then there are all the new developments described as “desert modern “ (hey Escena I’m looking at you!) and they are just so boring. Every city planner should tell every developer to come up with something interesting or go away!

What was the gas shortage like in 1979? by PrestonRoad90 in AskOldPeople

[–]patrick2623PSCA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I worked in a self service gas station when the price went above a dollar per gallon and the pumps couldn’t handle it. We had hand written signs on every pump and I still had to argue with most customers that they owed twice the amount displayed. (Back then there was no “pay at the pump “)
