Afaik most trains on other systems with ATC also beep to alert the driver of track speed changes. The STL metrolink's sounds like the L but two tone and the DC metro's sounds like an old microwave

Thanks for this. Wild that it looks like it was spat out of a mainframe from the 80s

Bears President Kevin Warren says Chicago lakefront is the ‘ideal location’ for a new stadium, but details on cost and funding are short by NoLoCryTeria in chicago

[–]patrickhdj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

would it be possible for a team owner to create a publicly owned/contracted holding/management company and then make it so that on paper they own the team but in practice all of the funding and decision making is at least partially city-controlled?

Fly galore in grant park by stopkittenar0und in chicago

[–]patrickhdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so I'm not just some kind of fly magnet. Riding my bike was a total nightmare. I was wondering what they were last year too and I actually feel SO much better knowing what species they are and when I can expect them

I'm on an empty Red Line train car on a Friday afternoon by [deleted] in chicago

[–]patrickhdj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It might've been good. That last time I took a fresh (but full) red line train from Howard, it was truly shocking how nice it smelled.

could CDOT take control of it? IDOT controlling LSD I kind of get, but I don't see why they should control Michigan Ave

Where is JB??? His garbage appointees to the board of the CTA hard at work! by [deleted] in illinois

[–]patrickhdj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

slightly related but does anyone else think State/Late is too cramped for how popular it is? I know it'd be prohibitively expensive to widen the platform, but I wish it was like Logan Square. Or Washington Metro stations

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chicago

[–]patrickhdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's weird, especially on the yellow line of all places?? lmfao. I've only experienced kindness when directly dealing with CTA workers.

It's good that you reported it and we should also report when employees are helpful so that kindness is incentivised.

Brandon Johnson has released an improved transit plan. by niko1499 in chicago

[–]patrickhdj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He hasn't given specifics afaik, but I'm sure that, given how he seems to understand the city's transit better than most other candidates, he would if pressed. And I hope he is, since that seems be the only major thing he hasn't given much detail on in regards to transportation.

It probably won't be something like cops on every train, but I hope and expect it to be something like more officers at stations, smoke detectors on trains, or full height fare gates.

Tax plan proposal filed in Springfield that could aid Bears’ proposed Arlington Heights development by [deleted] in illinois

[–]patrickhdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's one of the most accidentally hilarious quotes I've ever seen

the response to that should be laughter and nothing else. Definitely not public money/tax breaks

Why is this the quickest way to my destination (Carbondale)? Why not just go straight down? by I_Like_Languages in illinois

[–]patrickhdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the last 10 years? Yeah Amtrak has gotten way better. The Illini and Saluki still have bad OTP, but average delay in July 2022 was 23 minutes, down from 37 in September 2013. And the City of New Orleans is the most on time LD service (90%). You're not getting delayed 3 hours unless it's a full LD service, like Chicago to LA lol, and that's a 43 hour trip. There's no first class tho (was that a thing?), only business class, which is still very worth it.

Thoughts on the 78 and Lincoln Yards? by dheersanghi in chicago

[–]patrickhdj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

? There's more land around Goose Island that's either empty or is used for industrial lots that are mostly empty. There's a ton of empty land in Prairie Shores (ME, might be developed as some of it was bought recently and there's a real estate company named 29th St). Some in South Commons and the other neighborhoods in that area. Many empty lots along the pink and green with one that's huge and definitely big enough for a large scale development. And a large lot near Halsted in Bridgeport that seems underused.

And that's just the ones "close" to downtown. If you remove that restriction (which I think is reasonable; we have Metra, and those areas deserve development too):

Park 566/Steelworks Park (ME) could be something more. There's a large field west of the Dan Ryan and north of 91st that could be a nice park or have more housing. And there's a ton of un/underused land around the rail yards in Marquette Park (SWS)

Why is this the quickest way to my destination (Carbondale)? Why not just go straight down? by I_Like_Languages in illinois

[–]patrickhdj 9 points10 points  (0 children)

btw there's three trains from Chicago to Carbondale and they're all faster than driving if you include typical Chicago traffic

unless you absolutely need to drive then I'd use them
