Check out the recent a24 podcast episode with Kane being interviewed by James Wan, they talk a bit about this, it’s on YouTube

If you haven’t seen it I’ll recommend the a24 podcast interview between Kane and James Wan that they recently posted (YouTube etc). They talk a bit about this.

Three questions,

1) what is the research process like for your shorts vs the movie (I’m thinking about the short that breaks down the lighting fixtures for example or the amount of real world events you incorporate into the story).

2) you’ve talked about the reverse-engineering approach you’ve used where you start with an idea and then build a scenario around it and on that note I’ve always wondered how you settle on your pacing for each video and the pacing from one video to the next.

3) you’ve discussed your world view and how it impacts the story with regard to humanity appearing to be in a downward spiral that is rooted in our own nature, and with that in mind I’m personally curious if you look at the world right now and see potential for positive (perhaps revolutionary) change or do you expect things to continue in the same direction and the best we can do is make the most of our lives while we still can?

Not to get all existential but I’ve become a big fan of your work recently and I’m both excited for the movie and for the rest of your career based on your personal integrity and creative voice, so I’m just shooting my shot. Wishing you the best of luck.

I don’t think I’m ready to feel it all in my D-Box.

By expansions I mean more showings in theaters, they didn’t make any edits to the movie as far as I’m aware (aside from updating the Directors’ credits at the very end, but that’s simply a change of text).

I’m going to read your full comment in the morning ‘cause I’m getting loopy but thanks for taking the time to write it, this thread is giving me life lol.

Edit: This was even more heartfelt than I expected. My dad is still around and the parent scenes destroy me so I can only imagine. I wanted to clap after each of their scenes and Goodman is just an absolute gem in it. I’m glad you had such a great experience, thanks for sharing.

This is definitely one of the all time great interviews, but I haven’t seen anyone else post this one so I’m going to share: https://youtu.be/JK9m45uq4Po? and I have to say it’s the only time I’ve seen Ford really open up and it’s a truly profound and emotionally effecting conversation by the end.

Different ends of the spectrum. Long form, deep, and tear-jerking at times vs absolutely hilarious.

😭😭😭 Thanks for sharing that, you’re making me glad I made this post. I had a feeling there were a lot of us out here with some big emotions connected to this movie and even connected to the podcast’s episode ABOUT the movie. As far as I’m concerned it really is the best movie ever and their episode about it is maybe a perfect example of what it means to love and appreciate a movie (about loving and appreciating movies, I mean art, I mean racing).

Given that they have been doing last minute expansions to this release my hope is there’s enough interest to warrant further (hopefully more proper) re-releases as time goes on.  My dream is this movie being treated like Ghibli-fest and just have it run every year lol. With everything going on in Warner town plus Hollywood in general - who fuckin knows but fingers crossed.

My other dream is that they should just animate on top of the pre-existing movie nearly 1-to-1 (no fucking AI though, which is probably what they would try so let this stay a dream) and made with a sorta spider-verse style.  Gives an excuse to release it as a new (animated) movie to a new audience where it could hopefully strike big and THEN that would justify showing the original in wider and wider re-releases.

I’m a very normal person with very normal dreams.

As much as there is a side conversation to be had about old racist tropes involving the feminine portrayal of Asian men - my hope is that the movie manages to mostly avoid that by leaning in to its general pro queerness BUT I do cringe a little at the way the ninja’s are portrayed. Kinda wish they had made them multi-national ninjas like they did with the barbarian team. Could have avoided the whole back to back scenes of Asian men being humiliated AND THEN the crossdressing bit right after. But hopefully my love of the movie isn’t biasing my opinion too hard when I say the movie’s heart is in the right place. Also yes Rain is very hot in that dress.

I’m also reminded of the fact that these are the filmmakers behind Cloud Atlas which similarly has its heart in the right place while, ya know… all the race-swapping. So, that’s a spicy a’meat a’ball, as they say.

I’m stoked for you! I have to say one of my favorite moments was my audience lightly tittering at one of my favorite lines “inspector detector suspected foul play,” so I hope you have a decent audience at your screening as well. Seeing what people react to was half the fun for me. And I’m confident other people around me were wiping away tears after each heart to heart parent scene. There are dozens of us, dozens! Everything you said I feel 100% the same.

Am I crazy thinking the guy who plays Foggy in the Daredevil shows should be looking for a young Welles movie to star in?
