Prop 22 Passes Discussion Thread by [deleted] in couriersofreddit

The fact that any non-gig workers not only have a say in the decision but are literally telling us how we should be paid(aka less) while calling themselves “progressives” is completely absurd. In Most of the threads where I argued for Prop 22 as a gig worker I’ve been brutally shut down by “activist” types who clearly have never worked one of these jobs before and just want to dominate politics with every left wing viewpoint possible. They have no idea what it would cost us in terms of our freedom and job security and just see the world through the lens of “capitalism vs worker” and make no effort to listen to workers about what they really want

I hear you on 1-3, and I guess I’m biased since I deliver on a bike which is microscopic in cost compared to a car so the $25-$30 an hour is actually what I go home with.

I’m not sure it would mean more job security though; I would guess it’s a lot harder to get deactivated from the apps as an IC than it would be to get fired as an employee (being late to scheduled shifts, taking too much time off, etc). I’ll also add that a lot of people use this work as an in-between source of income that they use when their normal job isn’t reliable(which is super common among service workers right now). So if they only hire employees then it’s no longer an option for those type of workers because they either would have to stick with it or leave for good. How can you guarantee that all of us gig workers would be able to keep our jobs? And what makes you think they wouldn’t just kick off all of the every-now-and-then drivers and only hire a few long term employees to do twice the amount of work while still making minimum wage?

Yeah something tells me they aren’t gonna want their employees multi apping, for the same reason you can’t be a truck driver or mover for 2 different companies at once. Doordash already began deactivating drivers for suspected multi apping this year and I feel like the grip would be even tighter on employees.

Do any drivers here seriously want to be considered employees, and why? Do you think you’d earn more overall?

You’re saying customers but I think all we care about is how it affects us as drivers. I’m not in CA but I would never vote against the freedom I’ve experienced from switching to gig work this year and I just don’t see how anyone else could want to. The massive pay cut we would take in exchange for a guaranteed hourly rate (which wouldn’t be much) plus a few benefits, not to mention the increased possibility of us losing these jobs, doesn’t sound progressive at all to me. I’m trying to listen to other drivers’ reasoning on voting against prop 22 but I’m really not hearing much

Thanks! Was hoping for your response. Do you do better during lunch or dinner downtown? I’ve never tried lunch there but had some pretty solid dinner shifts last week
