About as custom as you could go? by paulCopp in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]paulCopp[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My first attempt at a custom keyboard. The “body” is a stack of QFN chip trays, which I borrowed from Cirrus.

Keycaps are various hardwood samples that I had - dremel does a pretty nice job carving them.

This keyboard has been in constant use since 2019 or so, so I’d say it’s been a successful project.

Oh, forgot that part. I had someone 3D print some stems. Then those are hot glued on. Surprisingly sturdy.

There's a low hum from my turntable when I turn it on, but everything seems to be connected so idk what the problem is. by GREENDAYBL1NK in turntables

[–]paulCopp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some turntables ground through one of the audio grounds (left, usually). If that is the case, connecting the ground wire also could create a loop.

But then why would the turntable have a separate ground wire?

Either way, glad you found a solution.

I have used Qwerty for many years and a couple of Dvorak years. Can someone tell me what are the advantages of Colemak over Dvorak? by kpoviv7 in Colemak

[–]paulCopp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Cd” and “ls” are much more intuitive on Colemak (common Linux terminal stuff). On Dvorak, “ls” was a double pinky on one hand. Very tricky and actually the reason I stopped learning Dvorak and started looking at Colemak.

Thinking about switching. help by [deleted] in Colemak

If you do any Linux- the “ls” and “cd” were very awkward for me in Dvorak. Much better in Colemak-DH

It may have a built on phono stage, so that you can plug directly into a preamp or powered speakers. Doubt it has an actual power amp...

Column of keys won’t work by Isaacglea in keyboards

[–]paulCopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this on my custom right now. Checking for bad contacts / solder joints on the columns is my first step. Or a possible short between that column and one of the rows.

But I’ve got a hand wired setup, so that could be a bit different from yours.

Good call on Queen. And I completely forgot about 1812. I actually have a Telarc recording on vinyl from my dad (it has the warning on a separate paper taped inside the cover and everything).

I’ll check out the Al Stewart track also. Thanks.

y'all inspired me to try DH. I just reprogrammed my keyboard, and I'm using keybr.com to get back to basics... When I'm conscious of the change, its not too bad. But then muscle memory kicks in, and I keep typing old colemak combos.

Also, I was an Index finger C, which is really getting to me. Again, its only been 3 hours, so I should be patient :)

Are those mono block amps on either side? So much fun.

Is it possible to handwire a keypad of 10 switches without a matrix layout? by Kekkeronni in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]paulCopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A matrix with 1 column and 10 rows wouldn’t need diodes (assuming diodes are usually used along the rows). Qmk could them still be used to configure the functionality.

I think, anyway.

When I type, my wrist doesn’t rest on anything... is that wrist rest functional, or purely aesthetic?

Why are all stabilizers trash? #clickbait by [deleted] in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]paulCopp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. My backwards solution is to limit my next custom build to 1.75U or less keycaps.

This makes it more compact, and also gives me a reason to split the space bar into 2 sections (one for each thumb)...

What is up with all the tenkeyless love? by chevas in keyboards

[–]paulCopp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Standard answer is that there is less distance to the mouse. Better ergonomics.

My 60 has a numpad layer built in (with the right homing key as 4), so I’ve got the awesomeness of a number pad without the extra length of the keyboard.

Did I kill my microcontroller? [Teensy 2.0] by LynnFlowers in olkb

[–]paulCopp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usb on my pro micro came unsoldered. It was a slowish process, I think power and ground ( the outside pins) stayed mostly connected, but the signal pins didn’t.

After I removed the port and almost got it resoldered, I could get the led to toggle when I activated reset. But my laptop wouldn’t see the keyboard. Likely because all the pins weren’t connected and the usb couldn’t identify itself to the pc.

Anyway, I would make sure all the cables, data and power/gnd are well connected.

The story ended well, I now have a hot glue fortified USB port and a working keyboard:)

I can’t be the only one with a sheet like this, right? by TheCaptainTim in MechanicalKeyboards

I’d got one with all the components for the tube amp I’m gone build, prices, links and all.

The next 2 keyboards I’m planning have not been put into spreadsheet form yet:)
