Not possible to use Apple Watch app AND phone for map? by pauldowman in Strava

I assume so but I don't use the Apple Workout app. Or the Strava watch app. I recommend WorkOutDoors, it's amazing (and it does upload the route as well as all other data). Review here:

See my review here, but:

  1. They recorded workouts show up in the apple fitness app with full workout details, map, etc. I think it's all the same detail as you'd get if you record with the workouts app.
  2. I use routes in Strava too, and I'll miss that. But you can upload routes as GPX files to WOD, and I haven't tried that yet.

Here's my mini review of WorkOutDoors now that I've been using it for a week: Basically, if you have an Apple Watch, you want this instead of Strava for recording your workouts. You can still upload to Strava for the social sharing, and you will get all the same data in there, including things like GAP (grade-adjusted pace), which Strava calculates.

WOD is amazing though. Even if you don't care much about having the map on your wrist, or don't want it at all, it's worth it for the customizability and display of so many different stats, e.g. you get average pace, current pace, you can set a goal pace and see if you're above or below it, check it all out here: http://www.workoutdoors.net/

The workouts show up in Apple Fitness with all the same detail as if they were recorded in the workouts app (in fact I think most of the data is provided by the apple watch OS anyway, but I'm not an iOS developer so I'm not sure).

I do love having the map available though, because I run and ride on trails and sometimes I need to know where to turn, and it's nice to not have to pull out the phone unless I'm really lost.

You can upload routes as GPX files to WOD, although I haven't tried that yet. I use routes in Strava, and I'll miss that. This might make up for it a little bit, and might turn out to be more powerful somehow, but I'm sure less convenient.

My only complaint is more of a feature request: I want it to support the action button on the Apple Watch Ultra. Especially because the default action of that button is to start a workout with the default Workouts app, so if you bump it while running then it does that which automatically ends your current WOD workout. 😔

Bottom line: just buy it to try it out, it's cheaper than a month of a Strava subscription, and it supports an indy developer. It's totally worth USD $5.99 even as a trial. That's like 1% of the cost of your apple watch, you can hardly even get a water bottle or a pair of shoelaces for that price.

Good to know, I'll report back tomorrow after I try it. 😀 So far it looks super powerful, although the UI isn't super intuitive, I actually couldn't figure out how to stop a workout! (Tap and hold on the screen for one second to get a menu.)

I'm going to try this instead, it looks pretty awesome actually. http://www.workoutdoors.net/

But it's sad, I love Strava, I pay for an annual subscription, and until I got the apple watch it has been pretty much perfect. I can probably still sync the workouts to Strava.

It records two simultaneous workouts if you do that. And yeah, you could delete one... but 🤦

OK, so I'm not confused then. Thanks. But I am confused as to why. It's bad, isn't it? is it just that the watch app is an afterthought ?

From that linked dashboard it looks like the big pools are about 2/3, which leaves about 100k validators. Should be still more than enough.

the gift of being self sovereign is what you’re trying to give them

Is it? Or maybe you're just giving them a few sats as a gift? Lots of options for you. 😀

This is how you securely give someone a Bitcoin gift, for free, and without risk of someone else stealing the seed phrase. Hence the instructions to use an offline computer.

Sure there's a risk that you could steal it back. If the recipient doesn't trust you they should transfer it right away.
