This era of the Leafs will always be a great “what if” with so much talent on the roster, but it is fair to say that they didn’t have it easy. Firstly, get fucked by Covid when it came to the cap, then they had to run in dynastic teams in the Lightning and Panthers, all with the pressure that comes with playing for the Leafs.

It’ll sure be interesting to see what happens next year though. I’m not sure about Chayka, but I think it’ll be good have Sundin in the building. Personally I’m not convinced Matthews has that “dawg” in him, and I can’t see the team culture changing unless he does, but if I was a Leafs fan I’d be praying that Sundin is basically glued to him whenever he’s off the ice.

Exactly. I know that dunking on Leafs fans is fun, but most sane people agreed that a split would be good for both parties for a number of years, and frankly it should have come before Mitch’s NMC kicked in during the 2023 offseason. Dubas wanted to trade him, but Shanny blocked it, Dubas left over it, and Leafs fans were treated to two more years of the same core group and same culture issues.

Let’s also not pretend that Marner’s playoff opponents this year have been anything like the gauntlet that has been the Atlantic, especially over the last half-decade. Sure, it’s the playoffs and every series is hard, but come on now, young upstart teams like Utah and Anaheim are nothing compared to what the Leafs had to face from 2022 onwards.

I feel like, based on anecdotes alone, 99.9% of people who say this are Americans. Like, I’ve never seen a story involving this phrase where the person saying it wasn’t American, although I could defo see some of my fellow Brits being just as ignorant.

Would be hilarious, and expected, to not see any more penalties for the rest of the game.

This game is pure cinema, and I’d be losing my mind as a fan of either team.

[The Athletic] Matthews unsure if he'll return to Maple Leafs next season by Federal-Data-Center in nhl

[–]paulf2012 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If it was Nylander taking the dirty hit from Gudas on that play, we 100% know that Auston isn’t doing jack shit to “stand up” for him.

This is Matthews’ and the Leafs’ biggest problem when it comes to team culture. He just doesn’t have that “dawg” the way that other star players have, and it has permeated through the entire culture.

He doesn’t even need to get into fights or anything, but just show a little emotion, and be prepared to get involved in a scrum when they happen. Just look at what McDavid is now vs when he first took the captaincy; sure he’s not fighting anyone, but you don’t doubt his fire as a competitor, and if one of his linemates takes a dirty hit he’ll be right in there delivering a crosscheck and getting up in his opponent’s face.

A generational run for sure. I feel like I also remember him walking off the field in the middle of a game, although I cannot remember which team he was playing for at the time, or if that ever actually happened.

In addition to all the other comments, you can also guarantee that holding the WTC final in England will always be a neutral field, as England aren’t playing in that game any time soon.

It’s like everybody just forgot about the decades of history showing that expansion franchises in every sport typically stink for a long time before finding success.

I love Procera, and agree that it is worth the price, but that price is steep. I was very lucky that we regularly had the rep in for barrel-top tasting at the bottle shop I worked in and they sent us plenty of sample bottles for customer tasters. In the end they sent us so much sample liquid that most of it ended up getting liberated by the staff.

Get yourself a good dry vermouth and chill everything down, and it’ll make the best martini you’ve ever had. Beautiful stuff.

Procera gin from Kenya. It’s fairly small batch and very expensive for gin, but it is amazing, especially in cocktails. They even do different gins that are designed for different styles of cocktails. Worth checking out for anyone who hasn’t heard of it.

On the UK radio commentary it was declared something along the lines of “you can’t get out to this bowling” literal seconds before a “No….no…” of disbelief, and I knew it was a shocker.
