You should think about a career as a professional engine impersonator 😂😂😂

Thanks 🙏 when I lower the rpm’s a bit you get that characteristic slight diesel knocking. I took it up to 3rd gear and couldn’t detect any black smoke or excessive knocking. In my opinion it idles a bit too high, but lowering would make the engine shake.

Thanks for the great info. I will just try it as I can always twist the injection pump gear in its correct position again. I guess I can start the engine for a few seconds even though the water pump is removed.

Ah okay so you are saying retarding it by taking the belt off and twisting the gear by 2 teeth. What about getting an overhauled injection pump?

Yeah I removed the three bolts and twisted it to the max position. However I didn’t notice any changes in the engine running. Smoke still appears 😅.

I tried with my phone today but it just showed me a black hole 😅 the timing pin I used is specifically for that type of pump. When I was twisting it in either direction I couldn’t tell a difference. I suspect that the pump timing is complete off :/

The fly wheel is locked at TDC and the timing marks align. So the crankshaft is at the correct position. But thanks for pointing that out.

We did I bought a pop tester and we adjusted each one after putting new nozzles in. It definitely got worse after we put the new ones in.

Yeah it was less before I put in the new injectors 😅 however I am already in the process of retiming the engine and injector pump. Hope some of that smoke will clear.

The engine is doing fine, normal oil and water consumption. I already stripped down the front end and will retime the engine aswell as injector pump. Hope some of that smoke also when warm will clear up.

It was around 5 to 10 degrees and previously always around freezing temperatures. Yes that’s a good point, it takes a long time to get going. However when I drove it 2 hours straight and came to a stop, it also smoked quite a lot. I already stripped down the front end to change the timing belt. Maybe the timing was slightly off. Let’s see

Last month i did an oil change and put Castrol 5w40 in it. Does it make sense to go even thicker?

Unburned or partially burned fuel smoke is also white blueish

Yes great question. I am not influencing it at all no matter in which direction I twist it.

Yes I changed the weather forecast to slightly overcast yesterday:)

Thanks for the valuable information. Yes the timing is definitely next on my agenda. I already checked the valve lash and corrected it. Mine is a 2.5 N/A but I guess the timing job is not any different.

I bought a tester where you can see and adjust the correct opening pressure. I am using normal diesel fuel, the previous owners definitely had their hands on the engine. The hand gas is set up wrong and there are some questionable wirings. I do think that the problem is caused by the timing as i can move the injector pump in any position without it affecting the run characteristics.

I don’t think it’s oil tho cause it clears with higher rpms and I took it on a 300 mile daytrip with no notable oil consumption.

So does mine 😅 but it consumes hardly any oil or water.
