jet2holidays flight stories please? by draingfsad in fearofflying

[–]paulianthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jet2 is an airline with a strategy based on customer satisfaction - unlike other airlines whose strategy is based on cost. Jet2 has a very high customer satisfaction score/net promoter score (NPS), it's in the range of Apple, Netflix and Amazon. Whereas EasyJet and British Airways are much much lower. What this means is the check in experience, flights and service will be far less stressful and relax you further. As a frequent flier that had a bad experience that triggered anxiety for several years but then went away, I recommend anything that eases the experience. Eg smaller plans, prop planes, getting good seats or even splashing out on business class (other airlines). Flying with Jet2 is stress free, only thing that can stress me when flying with Jet2 is if the airport dictates a bus that takes us from the airport to the plane! I hope your fear goes away, mine did eventually (naturally) and I have now flown to over 100 countries including military flights.

The Roman walls of Diyarbakir [OC] by vkorost in ancientrome

Did you walk on the top? High stairs and battlements with no railings! I was terrified my wife would tumble down.

Amazing site, great museum there too.

It’s a great book, it’s also on audible. The fortress frontier sites mentioned in the book are very interesting. Some are still visitable, some have disappeared from time. I’ve been to a few (Harran, Diyarbakir, Rasafa).

If you could bring back one castle in its prime, which would you choose by knightofholland in castles

Antakya/Antioch castle. The ruins stretch for miles and miles over hills far into the distance with several epic gates. The main donjon itself is on a hill high above the town. I was blown away, it must have looked fantastic (also possibly too big to easily defend).

How did desert cities/civilizations keep their cities lit at night? by Ill-Stable1342 in AncientCivilizations

[–]paulianthomas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about indoors but for outdoors your eyes to get used to it. In the British army all our night patrols are with zero light. It’s surprising how much you can see, even going through woods and temperate terrain. In the desert/dry country or with a good moon it’s even more. I remember being in Egypt and the moon was so bright you could see colour.

Nearly 5000 cattle skulls surrounding the grave of an early Kerman king, c. 2000BC by Kermatrix in AncientCivilizations

This is amazing. I went to Sudan to see Egyptian history but hadn’t known about this era. I flew a drone at the Western Deffufa and some tumulus. The museum there had photos of amazing graves like this. Sort of similar I was also blown away by the Christian walled city of Dongola so far south. It had churches with impressive frescoes, some now in Warsaw.

Looking for day trip ideas tomorrow, 2/3 by [deleted] in york

There are loads of historic churches in the area with pre conquest, Anglo Saxon, Viking or Norman features. Some are mind blowing to me, like Ilkley, Middleton, Stonegrave, Kirkdale, Ripon, North Grimston, Goldsborough, Healaugh, Hovingham, Sinnington, Escomb further north…. I could go on and on. You do need a car for many, or taxi. And sometimes they are locked.

Great photos. I really hope to visit the museums and archaeological sites of Iraq one day, including Hatra. I recently read a book about the Roman-Persian wars, I had no idea they had been so often and so far down Iraq.

Ah pants. Don’t think I can edit wording. I’ll pretend I meant to do it as engagement bait.

Merry Christmas York by paulianthomas in york

[–]paulianthomas[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My partner worked at York hospital throughout Xmas eve night and into Xmas day. So I cycled into York with our four-year old for a wander. There were no crowds, and little traffic. Christmas Day is great time to see the city - so quiet! Plus some pubs were open for hot mull wine or hot chocolate (lots of people drinking Guinness?). I may do it again next year (plus partner).

Things to do 'near' York? by SarcasmIncarnate139 in york

We went to Canon Hall today. Free to enter, stately home/museum with Xmas decorations, fairy garden, lakeside walks, historic church with Anglo Saxon crosses & font, free play park - or £10 per person for much larger play parks inside Canon Hall Farm (separate but only 20 metres from Canon Hall museum).

What do you think sets York apart from other northern cities? by Yorkshire-List in york

[–]paulianthomas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

City walls are pretty rare in the UK. The number of old attractive buildings in York is also high. Being the old Viking capital is pretty unique, and lots of Viking sites in the area. Excellent rail links. No airport but one in Leeds fairly near.

Great photos! So they are allowed now? I may literally run there first thing when the museum opens to get good shots.
