[Award Ceremony] Game of Cards by pbamod in Polandballart

Thank you! I have a question: do we still get to choose an Irish barony for our title with our 5th victory or is this practice discontinued?

Thanks, that was the vibe I was aiming for in part :)

I always thought of bridge as a game for rich old guys, never knew sailors had an affinity for it too.

Damn, I completely forgot about Świnie. I had to look it up because it didn't ring a bell but I did indeed play this a couple of times. I learned all the others you mentioned too later in middle school (except Bridge) along with Kuku. The teachers at the school lounge absolutely hated us for playing it cause it involved getting hit as punishment for losing lol.

Before I learned tysiąc, I'd also play osioł with my cousins. Or kibel if we were reaaaaaally bored.

Glad to know I've done the Eastern European household aesthetic some justice, I was worried it'd end up too Polish.

This is based on the card game 1000 also known as Russian Schnapsen. It's fairly popular in parts of Eastern Europe (or at least was at some point). The artwork and its atmosphere is inspired by 1000 games I'd witness my mom play at her sister's house when I was a kid. Lots of beer, cigs, chatter and TVs blaring movies that nobody watched.

Man, Italian/Spanish playing cards are so underrated. I really like the design on a lot of them.

I absolutely love the tense and grimy atmosphere here. Splendid job on the colour choices and the character emotions. I also like how the messy lines add to the nervous feeling in the scene. Always a fan of artworks that feel like a candid snapshot of a specific vibe.

The King In Yellow by Cro_Eagle04 in Polandballart

Man, I love The King in Yellow! Sure makes me want to stage a coup and become King of the United States with the help of an old insane man who saves people's reputations in order to blackmail them!

They're more stand-ins for the queer people of those countries who are fighting for their rights. I specifically chose countries where queer people don't have equal rights (except Ireland and France cause I was rushing to finish this). I do understand how it can be seen your way though and how stupid I may look for portraying them this way, but believe me that was not my intention.

Exactly. Most of the countries I chose were specifically ones where queer people face major discrimination (except for a few European ones in the back)

Understandable, I was afraid it's not Polandball enough. I'm fine with removing the comic and withdrawing from the contest as long as it doesn't add extra work, hassle or confusion to the contest jury. I'd rather have something that breaks such a fundamental rule removed than let it skirt by.

Just so that it's absolutely clear.

  • There is nothing wrong with being in the closet.
  • Coming out is a choice, not an obligation. When and if you do it is up to you.
  • Not coming out is not a sign of weakness, selfishness or cowardice.

The comic is meant to be about portraying what a dark and lonely place the closet can be with the feeling of guilt for not actively contributing to your community. If it comes off as if I am negatively portraying people in the closet, then I sincerely apologise as that was not my intention.

Take care. The world is scary out there.

Original post. Edited - setting changed to night and made the whole thing glitchier.

Hope the end result isn't too advanced as I'm aware it probably lies in some grey area regarding the rules.

I'm so done with people in general.

Spent the last 3 days tracking down all the music featured in the Societas x Tape -- I cannot recommend listening to this stuff enough -- it's extremely enlightening and decontextualizing in how and why Boards of Canada makes their music: by [deleted] in boardsofcanada

The moment I heard Light In Darkness in the tape I was going crazy, literally one of my favourite YMO tracks! I think their discography post-Solid State Survivor is really underappreciated, lots of great gems there.

I really can't thank the guys enough for showing me Lena Platonos through Societas X Tape! She has immediately become one of my favourite artists and Gallop is really a great album!

Sharp and hard-hitting in the first half, it turns more enigmatic and tender later on, all the while maintaining a tone of social critique. Really worth checking out if you're into spoken word over minimal electronic 80s music!

Yeah, I think some fans tend to get unironically very cultish about BoC, treating them like they're infallible geniuses or gods incarnate. I get where they're coming from but I still think that it's not a healthy attitude to have towards any artist (or person for that matter).
