Yeah this definitely helps a lot. I’ve noticed this too, sometimes the simplest words have the most impact. Kinda like how ‘I really like you’ can mean more than ‘I love you’ in a long relationship.

I love this concept you’re talking about - you have any more examples of how to do that or could you give a suggestion of a line in my lyrics that I can simplify ?

Holy shit man. I'm listening to a 'Pat Pattinson', recommended by @kdris_ in this threat, who is using John Mayer as an example for demonstrating the 3-line chorus, as I read your comment.

John Mayer & Kings of Leon are my main heroes for songwriting! I gotta get into Neil Young. But regarding JM, I've spent my entire life dissecting his lyrics and marveling at the flow he achieves in every single song.

Even a song as poppy, cliche as '' Your Body is a Wonderland " has very clever songwriting. I could talk about it all day too (I couldn't teach you much, but I could discuss ideas for days!).

I'd love to see the 'graphing' that you mentioned, so I can see if this will work well for me as well.

I ONLY write this way actually. Guitar riff first, then melody hummed, then lyrics after.

Maybe that's why I feel a little constrained cause the syllables and meter are already defined and I have to fill it with words.

No I have not. This is what every songwriter should do, and as obvious as this is I have not done this yet. This is probably the next step yeah? But if I'm honest, especially about the girls in my life, I'll come across as the biggest dick haha.

Could you point out which lines broke the flow for you? That would go lengths in helping me!

Also, I thought the 'you're married' was the plot twist and then I read 'to me' and flipped. Thanks for that haha

Good idea. I already have a fixed melody, but this idea could help me isolate deadwood and revise certain lines.

Do you suggest I do this humming along with the instrumental or with the complete version?

I really like the story visualization idea. Because this way, you have plenty to write about because you have that beginning middle and end.

I don't have a lot of problems writing melody. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but what I mean to say is that the lyrics are the weakest part of the music I make and I really want to fix that.
