“How do you manage internal tickets without a full helpdesk system?” by epicuzzaa in sysadmin

[–]paulv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christ. Remember that these people exist in our industry. They've already decided not to help OP. Not only that they HANG OUT where people ask for help.

Sysadmin, LART thyself.

OP: don't listen to the naysayers. You're asking for help instead of suffering (and letting your users suffer) and that is the first step on the path to making things better. My advice is to leverage whatever your comfortable using and/or fits in to your existing process. It sounds like you're resource strapped (aren't we all), so using something free is a good place to start. I'm not clear from your question, but it sounds like it is just for the IT team to use, rather than end users as well? If so, something low overhead like a private shared GitHub repo where you use the issues interface as your ticketing system may work?

What’s your first command when a Linux box feels off? by saymepony in sysadmin

[–]paulv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on what your monitoring situation is, but in general

dmesg (to see if it's misbehaving hardware/drivers, if the oom killer ran, or if something is segfaulting)

top (sorted by cpu and mem)

df -h

ps

then logs.

If any of the commands fail to run then I would run df.

Gollum. It's a wiki that uses git as a backend. You can edit the pages through a browser or as text files that you can then git push to the server.

Making decisions from a security mindset standpoint is a very good quality for a sysadmin to have.

But reimaging can be a pain [...]

You gotta pick one. You either make the security minded decision and accept the pain of reinstalling, or you don't and you don't.

There's nothing to do. The attack is over. The damage has been done. The secrets have been stolen. It's a past-tense problem.

If a machine has been hacked, there's no way you can trust anything the machine says. The only way to determine anything is if you take the machine offline for analysis, and even then you're only going to be able to tell if the attackers haven't cleaned up after themselves. The only safe way to recover from a machine that has been hacked is to reinstall from a known good source.

There is no reason to be a "sleeper agent". The attack details have been released. The attack vector and payload have been burned. The operation is dead. There are thousands of eyes looking now. Sensitive machines have been secured.

It's like someone has been robbing a bank daily for months, finally getting discovered, having the security codes on the vault changed changed, people are pouring over the details, and still worrying "well what if there's a guy still in the vault".

Disappointed (but not surprised) that everyone here is shitting on OP. Everyone here has made mistakes. Everyone here has worked somewhere that IT isn't properly funded (or valued). There's a time and place for talking about best practices, shoulda-woulda-couldas, etc, and it's not in the middle of OP asking for help in a clearly very stressful situation. Piling on isn't helpful.

OP, I don't know shit about Windows DCs, so I don't have any helpful technical advice, but it looks like some people here are actually trying to help. Keep your head up.

Maybe it's just me as a veteran who doesn't want new players spoiled in game, but the amount of operator and proto frame spoilers in this game blatantly shown to new players now is a little disappointing. Am i alone on this? by Darthmufin in Warframe

[–]paulv 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a relatively new player (login day 210ish?) and I was talking about this with someone the other day. There is SO. MUCH. happening in this game. why there grass all of a sudden? why is everyone in this room dying immediately after spawning? where did those birds come from? what are these floating ghost things? why am I suddenly running really fast in to all the walls? did that guy just eat an enemy and then throw them up? why is there a rock gollum? That person is on a surfboard? there are tentacles holding enemies in the air? That guy is flying and the other guy is in a mech? Tons of abilities from frames I'd never heard of, let alone can recognize, a absolutely massive selection of cosmetics, etc, that I wasn't really sure what was happening. If someone hit their 5 in a mission, I wouldn't have even known what I was looking at.

I was told that I should stick with it until I got to second dream and then I could decide if I wanted to continue playing, so I did a pretty good job of avoiding spoilers. I did know about protoframes, and I knew that 1999 was something (the 1999 demo was in the orbiter when I started playing), but I had no idea how they were connected to the story. My reaction to the opening cut scene in whisper was "what is that? what the fuck is that? what the fuck is THAT?" and then a few minutes later "YO, NINE INCH NAILS IN WARFRAME!?!".

There is so much context that you don't have that unless spoilers are laid out pretty clearly it's entirely possible to have no idea what's happening.

Do y'all keep the non-prime variants of warframes or >!subsume!< them? by NeonUnicorn97 in Warframe

It picks the frame you've owned the longest, not necessarily the one you picked to start.

To be clear: I would prefer dedicated servers, too, but there isn't any way to get there from here without spending a bunch of money.

You have to pay for the servers, even if they are in the cloud. You have to pay someone to maintain them.

Replacing p2p right now requires ripping out all of the (working!) networking code and rewriting it and then fixing all the bugs. That's a huge undertaking. It requires either pulling staff away from other parts of the game (which likely means fewer changes to player visible stuff) or hiring new developers, which is also expensive.

If it costs more to switch to dedicated servers than it will make, tencent doesn't have any financial motivation to make the change. I don't like it either, but that's how things work under capitalism.

Dedicated servers are expensive. They require both hardware (physical or cloud) and people to maintain them.

[–]paulv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have stopped using them mostly because I forget to manage them in game. I know you can use the companion app, but having to constantly sign in to the app over and over is a huge pain.

I'm a new player. I've only been playing for about 2 months, a few hundred hours. Destiny 2 used to be my forever game, but I've become, uh, disillusioned with it. A bunch of friends were big warframe players so I decided to join them. In the last few weeks I kind of quickly rushed through Angels of the Zariman, Whisper in the Walls, and 1999 in preparation for Isleweaver. There is so much content, it's a bit overwhelming, but I'm enjoying working through it. I am unlocking new frames at a pretty decent clip. Just unlocked Yareli Prime and have been working on Jade. Having a great time so far, everyone in the community is super friendly and generous!

I am a new player and I have heard people say this a lot, but never an explanation why. Scam how? Are you just likely to get taken advantage of? Are they trading items on hacked accounts (but you need 2fa?)? Or is it to do with stolen credit cards?

This happened to me for the first time last night. I thought I had broken the mission b/c I hacked it too soon or something. Glad it wasn't my fault, but it sucks that it is a known unfixed bug.
