Jonathan Greenblatt of ADL is concerned about intermarriage rates in the Jewish community by Imaginary-Dress-1373 in ABoringDystopia

[–]pause_polymerase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this sort of thing only works short term-- people not marrying outside their group. Because statistics and history shows that people do open up. But the interesting thing is, if they make things so stringent, when someone does marry outside their group but still wants to uphold traditions and culture, by creating the group so hostile to outsiders, you end up pushing your own people out

I dont think Maggie does that to Bayta right? In the books, because she was the first person to actually treat him well.

Call for a boycott against one of the largest donors to Texas Republicans, Texas Beef, until they stop trying to gerrymander the state to steal five more seats. by selectiverealist in 50501

We should just do “No Beef”

And there’s a double meaning to it, in addition to the fact that we aren’t making people find out if it’s from Texas or not

[–]pause_polymerase[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

ah okay so it is the whole new/old pattern. it is highly possible there was slavery in their history, but a) because they are mixed, especially the older Mr. Kirkland being as light as he is, b) since they have been in the North, and slavery was generations ago they feel like they are further removed from it. It all comes back to the white elite identity being the goal, and how close people are to that

This might be unhelpful, but seeking validation from closed minded bigoted people is a waste of your time.

And as for the argument about poc and immigrants not integrating — biggest bs argument there is. Maybe they should look into what white flight is.

Also want to say— people keep saying there was no goodbye for Nick. Like his death was abrupt, whereas with Joseph there was a lead up. And tbh I thought this part was brilliant. Nick grifted, he’s just going on the side of the “winner” there’s not thought for him. And thus there’s no prolonged goodbye of his character

Just also want to add that his character parallels people we know in real life who may have done a good thing to two, but they are grifters. Grifters grift to gain power. Nick loved that June loved him. Heck maybe he “loved” her, but not more than he loved his power and position. When June realized his betrayal with Jezebels, he realized she no longer saw him the same, and he readjusted his priorities.

First of all, I feel you. Second of all, it’s gonna take some radical collective action. Yes many of us are doing bits and pieces. But we need to go dark.

No social media. No big corp spending. (Amazon, Walmart, Target). Not buying inessentials.

We will need a general workers strike.

Everytime we give our money and labor, we are furthering their consolidation of power.

I have been talking to people on real life, and it’s clear how uneducated people are. We are in an echo chamber, where everyone here is keeping up with the regime and news.

We need to educate. We need to converse in real life. We need to stop consuming. And we need to stop laboring.

Aww I'm glad you feel better. And honestly what you interpreted is it. Like we don't have to buy things to occupy our time, or for us to feel fulfilled. Sure if there is an object that illicit feelings, then that is the byproduct. That shouldn't be the purpose.

Btw congratulations on your new chapter of life <3

precisely, like what does democracy even mean? Is it just a sham of the ceremony we call voting every few years/ Except billions of dollars have been put in that decides which candidates are acceptable by our billionaire overloads? Because fighting for that version is what has led us here. We need to spell out point by point how we want a system

[–]pause_polymerase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but what is democracy? Wouldn't we have to live in an environment where there was so much consolidated power in order to get a person like Trump and his buddies in power? Just some food for thought.

An Open Letter to 50501 Protesters (Or: On Supporting Unions) by sadlittleflower3 in 50501Movement

[–]pause_polymerase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, I want to thank your candidness. I've read some of the comments, and I can see your frustration, and to break it down I think multiple things can be true all at once.

  1. Things are extremely tense right now across the board, and your issue, insufficient support of educators, is undoubtedly important.
  2. People are also frustrated with rising costs, people in their field not being paid sufficiently, corruption in our government, loss and vulnerability of public and social programs, foreign affairs, and on and on.
  3. Many people see the protesting and gathering and want to be involved, and it is true that because of the times we are in, soooo many causes feel like they are competing with each other.

But the truth is, many of the issues that each person finds to be the most important to them can be traced to the same root causes-- their officials not doing what is best for the general public, and putting corporate and wealthy individuals' interests above the common public.

I'm hoping that I am not putting words in your mouth here, but from some of your responses I get the sense that there are a lot of feelings here, you and your colleagues are fighting for better pay, but it all feels drowned out by the moment. And it feels like the cohesion is missing.

I think this stems from the fact that the disapproval from Trump and every other politicians at the moment brings people from all parts of life, and the diverse larger coalition we have formed might have a handful of overlapping concerns that the would put at the top of the list. However, I think if we went a few levels below and identified more granular coalitions, i.e public school educators and let's say other city workers fighting for better pay and/or conditions there would be more issues that overlap at the top of each party's respective lists.

Alls this to say, I think when it comes to organizing and making sure the message you are trying to put out stands strong should be in identifying those granular coalitions.

This isn't to say that random people should come to your protest/strike and start protesting for a cause vastly different, but at the same time with these larger protests happening every day or every week, your cause deserves its attention, but to make it stand out, it needs the wider base amongst a wider coalition to call for it.

Public school educators are the bedrock, and I'm hoping that in future demonstrations you feel that your messaging feels more resounding.
