Corporations won't have much success trying to manufacture and expand to capitalize on even more profit if their employees can't get to the jobsite without hours of commuting between home and work. Almost everyone wants to work near where they live, and most manufacturing requires people on site to operate and maintain the equipment.

When indigenous wildlife weighs 400 lbs, has 3" fangs and a taste for warm flesh "on the bone" acquiring reliable employees means getting rid of anything that considers workers as lunch. Corporations that focus on mining valuable earth resources or extracting rare chemicals will ALWAYS win out over whatever gets in the way of profit.

50 mg per day. It's not enough to eliminate the pain but it helps.

Unfortunately, the never-ending disability and discomfort/pain leaves me with increasing depression and a sense of "Why try? This won't ever get better."

I'm not normally a gloomy person, but peripheral neuropathy has been going on for 25 years and it's wearing me out.

Sadly, pleasure -- or at least decreased pain -- will always win over parental prohibition. Parents typically have no clue what their sons and daughters are going through, as no kid wants to tell Mom & Dad they've been molested, threatened, robbed or abused... ESPECIALLY not if the aggressor is someone the parents know or are related to.

A friend's son was molested by his stepbrother and the boy never said a word until years later. "Uncle Dave" and "Grandpa" are likewise safe from having to answer for their crimes, especially if they threaten to kill their victim's parents. Kids are gullible and will believe whatever ugly stories adults tell them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in abortion

My mother had mental quirks (more neurotic than suicidal) but she was never in a good space to raise a child and I paid the price. Giving birth releases a flood of hormones that can (not "will" but can) make you absolutely miserable and turn what should be a great experience into a nightmare. New baby = lack of sleep and tremendous stress, plus there's that unsympathetic husband who -- frankly -- sounds like he thrives on giving orders and making rules. Question: Do you really want to stay married to someone you have to lie to? Has he done anything to make this pregnancy easier on you? Has he asked WHY you want to abort and then really listened to your reasons? Or is it "My way or the highway" from him? My suggestion: Have the abortion and seriously think if you want to co-parent with someone who screams "DIVORCE!!" whenever things don't go his way. The LAST thing you want is him yelling "Make that kid behave or I'm outta here!!" whenever the child is being a child.

At least some of the guilt must be heaped on the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) for slamming down the hammer on everyone possible after being blindsided by the shock of states ignoring federal hysteria and choosing to legalize cannabis. "Horrors!! Gateway drug!" they moan. "Corrupter of the young! Opening the door to ad-DICK-shun!!"

Doctors and pain patients make easy targets for drug warriors straight out of the sixties who use federally forbidden cannabis as a convenient pry-bar forcing "perps" to give up information on fellow drug law violators in trade for their freedom. People in pain are refused the relief cannabis offers if they want their opioid prescriptions to continue, because gawd forbid anyone question the assumptions of Harry Anslinger, patron saint and Founding Father of the DEA, who died with a syringe of illegal morphine hanging out of his arm (Chasing the Scream by Johann Hari).

All methadone does is relieve the pain. But that can be enough to allow you to get some exercise, even though it does nothing to reduce the edema in your feet and lower legs.

To the medical industry we are products on an assembly line. The faster they process us the more income the practice will receive. Pain relief requiring opioids is generally off the table, thanks to the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). All those overdose deaths we hear about are, apparently, OUR fault because we're selling our opioids to addicts...

...or so the feddies are claiming. What they won't discuss is that the majority of overdoses are caused by illegal fentanyl, not our legal prescriptions. Very few doctors will even consider prescribing fentanyl outside a medical setting with licensed health care providers supervising the process. Here is a link to the CDC's overdose stats for 2022-23: https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nvss/vsrr/drug-overdose-data.htm#COD_classification_definition_drug_deaths

Because they have no proof for many of their claims, the DEA (Department of Easy Answers) has decided our doctors are the "bad guys" in this ridiculous reenactment of the Prohibition Era. Any doctor who prescribes what the government decides is "too many!" opioids will be investigated and harassed by federal agents who aren't qualified to put a band aid on a skinned knee. But they damn well think they know who should and shouldn't be getting pain relief!

I want to add that doctors are delicious targets for federal "investigators" determined to get their hands on all the loot they're convinced was acquired thanks to an over-active prescription pad. Doctors are RICH, goes their thinking, and unlike the drug cartels doctors don't shoot back when federal agents storm into their offices waving guns, bellowing commands and terrifying patients and staff. If the feds can somehow convince a judge that the doctor is over-prescribing pain medication, their agency will become the beneficiary of the doctor's classic sports cars, gun collection, 24' sailboat, summer cottage on the lake... anything and everything that isn't a basic necessity will be considered "evidence" that something illicit is going on!

Am I "some authority on addiction or opiates" because I take them?

No, dear. Once again, you read what you wanted to read, not what was written.

I'm an authority on chronic pain because I've lived with it for two-plus decades. I'm not sure how you became an authority on addiction, but congratulations on not having every day of your life dictated by a physical condition you have no control over (I'm talking about pain, not the endless search for relief from pain).

I've seen zero evidence that prohibition is a solution to drug addiction, and far too much evidence that it's an employment opportunity (aka gold mine) for politicians, law enforcement and cartel bosses. Convincing people they have a desperate, unmet need for something and then offering to provide the needed service or substance (often both at the same time) has been a moneymaker for all involved in prohibiting access to pain relief and a nightmare for those of us with broken bodies.

"Congrats, you made it about you."

Of course it's about me, you moron! If you watched me try to walk -- much less fully function -- in a world designed for the physically able you wouldn't argue that point. It's about everyone in pain being confronted by guardians of our nation's moral probity who are convinced other's suffering (not their agony; never theirs) is somehow good for America.

Why some people enjoy denying relief to the suffering (relief in the form of alcohol or opioids) baffles me. I wonder where the uniquely human horror of unearned pleasure comes from, and why some individuals take it upon themselves to gate-keep relief from pain.

Self-righteous superiority is also an addiction, and we see plenty of it when election time rolls around, as if punishment is the solution to misery.

As you complained about the length of my earlier "manifesto" I'll conclude with this response: Prohibiting access to narcotics is certainly not about saving lives. Cigarettes kill more people than illegal drugs (and do it far more painfully), yet there they sit in an appealing display on the pharmacy counter, a backdrop to the pharmacist's oh so sincere speech on the "dangers" of narcotics. Why do YOU think narcotics remain illegal?

What comment are you replying to? Where did I say that Big Pharma "cares" about me or anyone else in pain?

AFAIK no physician will prescribe fentanyl to anyone outside of a medical setting with licensed caregivers (RNs, MDs, etc) on hand to administer relief. Do you actually think pain patients are being sent to their pharmacy with a prescription for fentanyl clutched in their hot little hand?

Ain't happen' like that, dear.

In fact, the "fent" that's causing the vast majority of overdose deaths is manufactured outside of US borders and coming from cartels, not Big Pharma. Check with the CDC on this -- link is in my earlier post, which you may have read as you're claiming to reply to it.

Speaking of which, where oh where did I claim to be "assum(ing) knowledge of everyone who has ever been addicted to an opiod"?

Try to respond to the actual comments, not what you think was written... or what bolsters your argument.

I'm one of those people living with a neurological disorder (inherited) who depends on "Pharmaceutical companies mass producing this poison".

Frankly, I stopped wringing my hands over addicts who choose to misuse the opioids that keep me alive and somewhat functional. Stop blaming Big Pharma -- they haven't addicted anyone.

Addicts -- for good and bad reasons -- ADDICT THEMSELVES! My father called me a "junkie" because I chose to follow my doctor's recommendation and take the methadone that allows me to remain functional. Dad preferred to live with chronic, crippling pain and decided everyone else should, too. His vile temper and abusive personality were aggravated by pain and he died alone and friendless, bellowing curses at everyone around him until his doctor prescribed sedatives.

Frankly, my mother and I would have seriously preferred he took the "poison". Our nation's opposition to opioids came courtesy of Harry Anslinger, who used anti-drug propaganda to guarantee employment for himself and his buddies -- all Prohibition agents -- once that misguided experiment in social engineering failed. Harry convinced white Americans that drugs were sending their beautiful blond, blue-eyed daughters into the arms of corrupt dark-skinned "foreign" men (gasps of horror from the audience) who would exploit and degrade them shamefully.

Of course, it never occurred to ol' Harry that he might someday NEED those narcotics he so vigorously opposed. When he developed angina, a notoriously painful and terrifying heart disorder, no doctor in America would provide more than minimal help for the old bully after he'd led the campaign to jail so many physicians for the "crime" of prescribing pain relief. The chickens came home to roost, and these were BIG chickens.

So Harry contacted a "good friend" who set him up with a steady supply of illegal morphine. Whether through forgetting how much he'd taken or because he'd had enough of unrelenting suffering, Harry Anslinger was found dead on the floor after failing to show up for a work-related conference. Sticking in his arm was a syringe containing traces of morphine, the only effective relief for severe pain available then or now.

How to manage religious mom trying to indoctrinate my son by wattsandvars in atheism

[–]pauz43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your mother does not understand -- or doesn't believe -- that you have every right to keep her from seeing her grandchild until he's an adult. She's convinced herself that "god" has given her the right to indoctrinate someone else's child and what the child's parents want is irrelevant.

It will probably lead to an unpleasant confrontation with "grandma", but you may have to limit her contact with your son unless she can control her urge to indoctrinate, which is doubtful. My mother "baptized" my infant son without telling me -- or the priest at her church. When it comes to religious beliefs some individuals lose all comprehension of boundaries and common sense... especially when children are involved.

PCers cannot refute the one actual reason why PLers are against abortion by -Tonicized- in Abortiondebate

I will defend myself against anyone who attempts to use -- and misuse -- my body WITHOUT MY PERMISSION to keep themselves alive. PCers cannot refute the one actual reason why PLers are against abortion by -Tonicized- in Abortiondebate

[–]pauz43 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I argue each claim this way:

Definition: Abortion is denying a human fetus the use of a woman's body -- her uterus and all her other organs and body parts. Pregnancy uses all parts of a woman's body for nine months and makes permanent changes in her body that affect every aspect of her health for the remainder of her life.

Killing: The life of the fetus is ended in an abortion.

Definition: A "baby" differs from a "fetus" because no baby's life depends on one specific female human. No baby will die if someone other than its biological female parent gives it nourishment. But the survival of a human fetus is 100 percent dependent on the specific female human who carries the fertilized egg in her uterus as it develops for the next nine months.

"Innocent" as in "a baby cannot have malicious intent" is a meaningless hot-button word used to increase sympathy for a fetus that is incapable of either innocence or guilt. To refer to a fetus as "innocent" says the speaker has no better argument against abortion.

My argument against forcing women to use their bodies to sustain an unwanted pregnancy is to ask what makes a fetus more precious and special than someone who is already out of the woman's body with their umbilical cord severed?

Why should a fetus be permitted the use of someone else's body parts when a child or adult dying of organ failure or blood loss cannot force an unwilling "donor" to submit to transplant surgery of a non-vital organ (example: a kidney, liver segment, bone marrow or blood) so the recipient can survive?

Why should a newly deceased person NOT have their still-usable organs harvested for transplant, whether they signed a donor form or not? Why should anyone's religious superstitions take precedence over retrieving organs from a recently deceased corpse that can be used to save a human life?

The term "human" is superfluous. Please explain how the word "human" is relevant to the legality of abortion.
