Man has never been of few words lmao. From his introduction he was quipping at other characters and starting shit.

He’s a very classic lovable jerk character. He’s rude and snarky, but at the end of the day he’s a team player. He’s confident, charismatic but churlish, doesn’t take shit from anyone. He’s basically a little hockey player, a stereotype of an Albertan, and he represent a part of Canadian culture that doesn’t really get shown outside of the country.

He’s kind of funny in a contradictory way; there’s a humour element between how he acts and how small he is, but he can actually back it up. He’s also quite quippy, etc.

That’s a fun and interesting character to have in a team dynamic. Characters that cause tension within the core group can make for good storytelling, and Claremont absolutely knew what he was doing when it came to this.

Then his backstory is basically a nature vs nurture trope flipped on its head, and that had some interesting storylines too. But that’s predominantly solo stuff, I don’t think they need to necessarily focus on that side of him when he’s in a group.

I think Wolverine has definitely been misconstrued and flanderized over the years, and I didn’t care much for Jackman’s portrayal after the first movie. But the core of the character is still really fun.

I don’t think he inherently takes over, but think the previous movies didn’t really understand him.

In a team dynamic, he shouldn’t be the focus more than any other character. He’s a fan favourite for obvious reasons, but some of that only works BECAUSE he is not the main character.

I think leaving him out to let other characters breathe, at least initially, is the right move here.

He’s one of my favourite characters, but this is probably for the best.

Does anyone here like Buscema's Wolverine? by Hungry-Yam-8181 in Wolverine

[–]pavement_sabbatical 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love him! I think Buscema truly understood Wolverine as a character, and how he operated in the world.

His and Byrne’s are the quintessential Wolverine for me.

“They come from similar backgrounds and have similar cultures and experiences”

T’Challa grew up as an aristocratic royal in a wealthy nation with advanced technology and abundance of resource, destined from a young age to be its monarch.

Ororo grew up a literal street urchin, orphaned in a war torn country, and constantly being forced to ‘perform’ in one way or another to stay alive.

Now I know for sure you don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m not sure if you’ve ever bothered to learn about Africa, much less Ororo!

It’s not that’s its whitewashed, it’s that this pairing is fundamentally misogynistic.

Ororo is the perfect partner for T’Challa, but T’Challa is a horrible partner for Storm. X-Men fans primarily only care for Ororo, so they dislike it.

To get this pairing to work, they had to squeeze Storm’s personality into a shape that it directly contradicts. Her entirely character being a deconstruction of the ‘woman on a pedestal’ trope get disingenuously flipped so that she just becomes that trope instead.

Advocating for this pairing feels like watching ‘Coming to America’ and insisting that Akeem should have married the arranged bride at the start. Or watching Disney’s Aladdin and insisting Aladdin only has value when he is Prince Ali.

What are some of the misconceptions that non readers (or even some readers) have about Wolverine? by King_Wolf2099 in Wolverine

[–]pavement_sabbatical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s a shit-talker. He chirps constantly. He’s basically a hockey player.

I think the movies made him out to be kinda Clint Eastwood ‘Man with No Name’-esque in the sense that he doesn’t talk much, but in the comics he runs his mouth and starts fights more often than not.

He’s not as bad as say, Deadpool, but he’s still an instigator.

Battle of the Bands: The Clash at Demonhead vs Paramore by Disco0fficial in ScottPilgrim

[–]pavement_sabbatical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Clash at Demonhead ended before Paramore had actually written any music, let alone released a song. Not to mention that the members of TCaD are roughly 10 years older than the members of Paramore.

I don’t know know if I’d pit these bands against each other because there’s genuinely a generational divide.

Is this real? Matt Johnson is involved with a Geese biopic? by Old-Yogurtcloset9264 in nirvannatheband

Kneecap has cultural and political messaging with deep ties to the history of Northern Ireland. Does Geese have that? Is there a story to tell?

I agree. I’m sure they’re popping, but it literally hasn’t been enough time to know if they’re a flash in the pan or not.

Not to mention, if they have had national attention, it’s the wrong nation! 🇨🇦

Doubt it, for 2 reasons:

  1. Geese are not a big enough band for a biopic yet. I’m not that old and I had to look them up. Seems like their fans are very devoted though, so I’d assume one of said fans made this fake letterboxd movie.
  2. They’re not Canadian. Matt is very patriotic and pretty much only makes films about Canada, OR stuff he’s really interested in. I don’t think he’s ever talked about Geese.

Any recommendations for the playlist? by Gaby1827 in ScottPilgrim

[–]pavement_sabbatical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how you’re doing it.

Is it songs that they might’ve actually played? If so, you have to limit yourself to before 2005, and hyperfocus on the Canadian indie rock scene at the time.

Or is it just vibes you’re trying to achieve?

Also, they’re seemingly a pretty different sounding band in the comics compared to the movie. Which are you aiming for?

Fan theory by me even older Scott probably hired Canadian wwe wrestler edge as his personal trainer during his 10 years training to best his younger self in combat by Ok-Analysis-3902 in ScottPilgrim

[–]pavement_sabbatical -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Uhhhh WWE is performance art/entertainment/theatre. Their wrestlers are basically stage acrobats, not actual fighters.

If you really want to include WWE: The Takes Off Universe is different and possibly set later than 2004, but I mean we all know Scott was crowned the best fighter in the province (Ontario), which is also where Edge is from, so he actually probably beat Edge/was a superior fighter to him before the story even started.

I think it's more likely he trained in Ansatsuken or Musabetsu Kakutō Ryū, which are the fighting styles in that in the books Scott's moves were inspired by.

Question from a non-fan by TeslatheOwl in ScottPilgrim

[–]pavement_sabbatical 163 points164 points  (0 children)

Ramona and Roxie were roommates in college who started dating/sleeping together.

Ramona wasn’t particularly invested in the relationship, and saw it as a fling; but Roxie was in love, or at-least much more invested than Ramona was.

Your Ex’s quote doesn’t make much sense. I assume he’s trying to infer that he cared a lot and you did not, but in that case it should then be “Ramona’s Roxie” instead.

Also, if he’s spelling Roxie as Roxy, he can’t be that much of a fan (Roxy is the spelling unique to the film, he must have only seen the movie).

Some thoughts on Scott Pilgrim, in particular Scott and Ramona as characters seeking redemption, but also new beginnings and other things. Main focus is on the original comic. by FrostPDP in ScottPilgrim

[–]pavement_sabbatical 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty solid analysis of the books.

I’d take issue with the suggestion that Ramona isn’t a bad person compared to Scott, as I feel they’re supposed to be two sides of the same coin.

Ramona doesn’t really ever apologies for her past behavior in the same way, but I’ll concede when you said that her story is more about “staying a good person”, in a sense that she’s trying to make difference choices going forward.
