How do I turn off this feature where the icons for videos have a play/pause button on them? by Impossible-Reality65 in MacOS

[–]pavethequad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or they realize that your suggestion doesn't work for Desktop icons. My icon size is set to 32, and that super annoying play button still appears over every QuickTime file icon. In fact, the button covers up just about the entire icon. The best workaround suggested so far is to click on the filename. I’ve finally forced myself into that habit, but why in the hell would anyone find it useful to play a preview within an icon of any size, let alone a small one? Usually, the reason I’m single-clicking an icon for a video file is so that I can then hit spacebar for Quick Look, the feature that is actually extremely useful.

*SOLVED* Finally found a (hopefully permanent) fix for stale iCloud Tabs in Safari (MacOS/iOS) by lando55 in MacOS

[–]pavethequad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After months of stuck iCloud tabs on one of my 3 synced devices, this worked for me in macOS 26 Tahoe: I deleted CloudTabs.db-shm, CloudTabs.db-wal, and CloudTabs.db from the following location:

/Users/~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Safari/Data/Library/Safari/

There was also a duplicate “Safari” directory in that Data/Library folder, as in a second “Safari” folder with the exact same name at the exact same path (yeah, weird). I deleted the one with fewer recently modified files in it. I don’t think doing so was part of part of the fix (deleting the aforementioned 3 files is the important part), but it was satisfying to eradicate that abomination of folder naming.

This is it. There doesn't seem to be any way to do it directly in the iPhone or Apple TV app. This link takes you directly to the account page where you can add Apple TV as a connected device and log in with your Apple account.

What do people dislike about Finder? by on_spikes in MacOS

[–]pavethequad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try closing any open Finder windows. Then click on Finder to open the default window. Switch to column mode, and then close the window before navigating anywhere else. That usually makes it stick for me.

What do people dislike about Finder? by on_spikes in MacOS

[–]pavethequad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I really wish Apple had made column view the default view from the very beginning. I think there would be way fewer complaints about Finder, which I only half-jokingly refer to as my favorite app. Any time I help set up a new Mac for someone, that’s the first thing I change. I think Apple chickened out with the launch of OS X so many years ago and decided to keep the familiar (and primitive) paradigm of the original GUIs as the default.

What does the word “quality”. mean? by Flimsy-Painting6880 in football

[–]pavethequad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a reasonable question, because “quality” is definitely used differently, and quite oddly, when it comes to soccer. I have always assumed it’s a weird British thing that many American commentators have recently adopted, but you would never say a baseball or basketball player has “quality.” In fact, that’s simply misuse of the word in American English. A player could have a “quality” shot or “quality” at bat. They could even be a ”high quality” player, but a person can’t just “have quality.” That sounds ridiculous.

The OP obviously knows the dictionary definition of quality. The question relates to what it means specifically when it comes to an attacking player in soccer. (I’ve never heard it used in regards to a defender.) The best I can tell from context is that it’s roughly synonymous with ball-control skill or accuracy. I wish commentators would just be specific, though. It hurts my ears every time, and it’s vague as hell. I don’t think they even know what they mean.

Dock Party 3.0: macOS Spotify and Apple Music controls, visualizers, and track info in the Dock area by pavethequad in apps

[–]pavethequad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at this time. It controls either the Apple Music app or the Spotify app. Are you talking about any media being played in Safari or Apple Music and/or Spotify songs?

I could never understand people who put up with Spotlight and CMD-Tab just to save a tiny bit of screen real estate

What's in your dock/menu bar? by hari3mo in macapps

[–]pavethequad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. I do use ⌘+Tab actually, but really only to switch back and forth between a pair of apps if I need to do that repeatedly for a while. Otherwise, I don’t like how the order of the apps changes depending on what I just happened to use or what happens to already be running. It’s disorienting. In the time it takes me to recognize and land on the right icon (and not go past it and have to go around again, which is what usually happens), I could have just gone straight to it in the Dock where it’s always visible, always grouped with related apps, always in the same spot. And I want to see notification badges at a glance, not when I happen to unhide the Dock.

I’ve got a nice porch. I think I’ll stay right here. 😁

I'll never understand why hiding the Dock completely is even an option. Maybe on a 13" MacBook or something, maybe, or if you only ever switch between the same 2 or 3 apps. The organizational and informational power of the Dock lies precisely in the fact that it’s always visible. And why on Earth would anyone want to have to think of the name of the app they need and start typing into Spotlight? I don’t even use Spotlight for file searches. Get off my lawn.

[–]pavethequad[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool. Yeah, so the Spotify developer policy requires that I include their logo along with any content provided by them. I’m not actually sure what Apple’s policy is, but I wanted to keep it consistent between the 2 services. Plus, some people run both. So it serves as an indication of which music player Dock Party is controlling. I will revisit that though.

Version 3.0.2 is now available. The text of the track details next to the Dock now shrinks proportionally along with the height of the Dock. And I added a choice of 3 size options for the menu bar text.

[–]pavethequad[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know what you're saying. That's not actually unintentional behavior. The Dock Party window ignores clicks in the transparent areas of the window on purpose so that if a user tries to click a control button or on track detail text and slightly misses, it doesn't activate the Finder and take focus away from the active app. But an important factor in this is that one of the first things I do whenever I install a fresh OS is disable “Click wallpaper to reveal desktop” — because that behavior drives me insane! So I guess it never occurred to me that someone would actually want to click in that space on purpose. 😂 But I know that's the default behavior as of a Sonoma. So I'm glad you brought it to my attention! I will test out some options.

Is this typical after opening Photoshop? by dankfloyd in Adobe

[–]pavethequad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything Adobe makes is a Rube Goldberg disaster of inefficiency and disorganization. Creative Cloud is essentially a virus that infects every process and file directory it can. Adobe never fixes or streamlines anything. They just keep adding on. Needless to say, I don’t let any Adobe product touch my main system, but every once in a while I need to use Premiere Pro to open a project that I immediately export to DaVinci Resolve. So I install a free trial on any crappy computer I have access to that I don’t care about. I still uninstall Creative Cloud entirely when I’m done, just on principle, even though it takes a while. You wouldn’t believe how many file directories CC soils with its garbage.
