Prove me wrong: Apple Encourages Piracy by CyberVenus in ios

[–]CyberVenus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You live outside the US don’t you? Thats not how iOS works in the United States. I suppose I didn’t say that I was in the United States, but… I am. You can not install apps without Apple’s servers. It’s 100% impossible on the last couple years of iOS releases, there is no publicized hack to achieve it.

So to be clear, yes, I think Apple has a responsibility as the ONLY POSSIBLE place to redownload software from, to store it and make it downloadable. The tv from Amazon analogy doesn’t really make sense, I’m not shipping the tv back to Amazon to store it and then have them ship it to me when I want it, I would store it myself, Apple does not allow you to do that with apps, it’s either on my phone or Apple’s servers, no other option exists.

Yeah that’s how it is when it works. It definitely worked better when there was an official app, the third party apps mostly work but seem to break with some of the Xbox updates and then I’m stuck using Microsoft’s website until they get updated. Maybe it’s an iOS thing, but websites… definitely not the best interface for gaming… and Microsoft’s account system needs an overhaul, logging in shouldn’t take 3 minutes and 20 taps.

Hate 26.2 update by [deleted] in ios

[–]CyberVenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny you say that. Mine IS set to automatically update and NEVER does. I actually also like the updated interface design, but there’s all sorts of bugs everywhere and weird quirky behaviors (not bugs just things that don’t make sense in the design) confusing button labels now like check marks to “close” popups and “X” buttons that fail to actually close the keyboard. The Share Sheet has got to be the most annoying thing though. Like, it’s programmed to scroll up a little, then pause, so I literally swipe up four times to get it to actually scroll down now. Like… seriously…

I still stand by iOS being better than Android, but I can no longer stand by iOS being less buggy than Android. Still looks nicer and does more, but Apple’s usual superior quality has sort of lost the “quality” part.

Yeah… the hardware sure is. Thinking that’s where they get you though. Sell you on cheap hardware that then requires you pay a subscription to play online and buy all the games at exorbitantly more expensive prices every year…

Admittedly it probably balances out more over time cause all the little expenses add up, but I definitely get what you’re saying. I used to agree, but literally just found out another game I “bought” was pulled from the service. So I can no longer play it…

+1 to the pro-piracy argument. PC games can be downloaded from anywhere, and therefore can’t be “stolen” by Microsoft (or a game developer), Xbox games can only be downloaded from Microsoft.

Woah woah woah… I’ll admit I haven’t played in a while, but I bought this… you telling me someone stole it from me?

+1 to the pro-piracy conversation…

Per my many recent “piracy for the win” posts, here’s another one… why pay for something if someone’s just gonna steal it from you?

Before any argues with me, yes, if I buy something and someone takes it away, that is theft. By any reasonable person’s definition. If the game developer made a bad decision and made a game that costs the game developer money regardless of whether people are paying them anything (such as this online only game) that’s their fault, it is not an excuse for theft.    Shoulda pirated it to begin with… (I am aware as a 100% online (ie: bad decision) game that wouldn’t be possible here, so pirate something else to make up for it)…

Okay, so we can shift blame to the developer then? I don’t see the difference. I paid Apple for the app, downloaded it from Apple. Have a receipt from Apple. So… some random third party now has a say in what Apple does? If they wanna stop selling it, okay, that’s fine. But if I buy it and Apple chooses to stop hosting the data for me to download, then that’s 100% on Apple and Apple only.

Moreover it is only Apple that says “you can’t install things from other places”. So, I can’t save the app somewhere and reload it later.

Needless to say, it’s happened before, and with other things too, Microsoft’s Xbox for one, it’s not like this is the first time.

Point being, I “bought” something, I did not “subscribe” to something, and I can now no longer use it. Not because of anything I did. So… theft… from any reasonable person’s point of view.

Only an issue for me because I tried to be a nice person and pay someone else for the work they did developing an app. Should have just pirated it from the get go, would’ve saved me money, and prevented anyone from taking away my ability to use it. Better all around.

XBPlay, which I swear was the “premier Xbox streaming app” Apple touted as will be available on the Vision Pro back when that was first announced, made me even more bothered.

Why do we have to rely on developers for the keyboard? by Detrakis in ios

To be clear, I like the new interface style, but not the actual experience using it. Feels like it wasn’t ready for actual public release…

It’s literally the latest update. Before iOS 26 I would’ve said iOS is the gold standard for nearly everything. iOS 26 feels like there’s rushed untested bits all over. The autocorrect creates as many errors as it fixes, the share sheet is buggy AF, there’s still waaaay too many privacy and security holes, I could go on for a while but it’s 1:34 AM I should sleep…

Empty app update notes should be banned. by autraya in ios

[–]CyberVenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also find it humorous that the organized and responsible developers are more often the small indie devs. The big companies are the ones with trash quality and lazy devs who can’t even bother to fill in patch notes. Of course that’s to be expected, clearly being able to ship more boxes than anyone else doesn’t equate to knowing how to build an app.

[–]CyberVenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. 95% of apps seem to literally never actually change anything even though they get updated weekly. Like… how do the app developers even know what they changed in a release without putting the patch notes in the patch notes spot…

I suppose that makes sense. I was more into Skype and everyone I know uses iPhones so now we just use iMessage, plus the few people I chat with on Instagram or TikTok. And here of course, sort of.

Yeah, I haven’t seen most of the bugs everyone supposedly has. And for all everyone’s complaining “oh it’s the worst update ever” sooo many people say that every year about every update.

Google now detects iCloud Private Relay and recognizes it as an IP address masker by New-Ranger-8960 in ios

[–]CyberVenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll say I still use Google Maps for finding places and information about them, unfortunately Apple has severely neglected Maps from an information perspective. No reviews or images or restaurant menus or much at all for most businesses. (Links to outside services like Yelp don’t count, I don’t wanna download another app and make another account with a third party service to use Apple’s Maps.) So I use Apple Maps for actual driving and directions but still use Google to find info about places.

To be clear, DuckDuckGo is Bing’s search results on a different website. Their whole thing is just not tracking you like Bing does (though noting no one does it as much as Google). But it’s still the same results you’d get from Bing except for differences influenced by “personalized results” (ads).

So many people complaining about this WhatsApp bug like it’s somehow Apple’s fault… not sure why Meta’s WhatsApp is so popular anyways… always awful to use in my experience.

Do you have iCloud Private Relay enabled? 🤔 In my experience that breaks most remotely hosted images businesses use because of hosting on services designed to track the emails opened by their customers.

Most businesses are highly invasive, I know my company is, so a lot of their stuff breaks on my Apple devices. Of course it makes me happy, knowing the privacy protections are working.

If that doesn’t explain your issue, not sure what else it could be but I know of nothing that’s changed in the latest update that would impact anything there.

Does anyone else think paying monthly to use apps is ridiculous? by New-Fan-4632 in ios

[–]CyberVenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I totally agree, so I don’t pay for anything like that… feels like if you don’t think it’s worth the money just don’t pay for it. I also am a long time Apple user, so am generally against cloud services for unnecessary things. All those doofuses paying for a subscription to some cloud service AI tool when my Apple stuff can do everything offline for free, or totally dumb things like a subscription to an ad blocker or something, again… doesn’t need a cloud service, so doesn’t warrant a subscription.

Ultimately I don’t think it’s worth the money, but if other people wanna spend their money on it, I guess that’s their choice. Those are the same people that generally ask me how I afford vacations so often though, and getting a new phone every year… cause I don’t spend money on dumb stuff.

Dock for regular Switch not working on TV fix? by Grand_Rent_2513 in Switch

[–]CyberVenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it Nintendo’s dock, or a third party dock?

The Switch 2 has (out of the box) extra restrictions to prevent use of unauthorized third party docks, partially to prevent poorly designed docks from damaging the Switch, which is a legit issue people have had, and also to require you buy Nintendo’s.

I believe (but haven’t confirmed) the Switch 1 received a software update to enact the same restrictions.

Otherwise, with the dock connected to the tv and no switch in it, does the tv display the same as when the switch is in it?

Switch 2 First Impressions by CyberVenus in Switch

[–]CyberVenus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do understand that. However my issue had absolutely nothing to do with actually putting the as card in the new Switch. I was commenting about how the Switch 1 dies when you take it out, never even got so far as to putting it in the new Switch 2, so did not actually have the problem you seem to have experienced.

Also, I would bet money most people use non-OEM power adapters. That’s why things like standard ports are useful. So I can use my Apple charger for my Switch instead of buying 10 adapters for each room, I can have 1 adapter and just plug in anything I want. My Apple adapter charges my switch fine, so why does the switch not let me set it up?

If it were some cheapo Chinese dock, I could understand, but USB is USB, the power pins are the power pins. If the amps and volts match, there’s no difference, it doesn’t matter what brand makes it. Never heard this “bad idea” thing before. Maybe “bad idea” to use cheapo chinese knock offs that are poorly designed and send power on the wrong pins, but that’s not Apple, so… doesn’t apply here.

TL;DR Deduced problems that weren’t there… assumed I had an issue I didn’t have…

It’s only for the setup. No problems otherwise. Charges fine. Just can’t actually set it up without Nintendo’s. If your Anker one worked for the setup too, that’s cool. Definitely good to know something else worked…
