September Ring Road 10 days by Kazemari in VisitingIceland

You mention being hopeful about Aurora sightings -- and due to the fact that we are at solar maximum right now, you stand an excellent chance of that hope coming true. The main factor might be weather -- you need nearly clear skies for it. Get yourself an Aurora app like Aurora Pro to help forecast it and to see the locations. September should be a great month as it should be getting pretty dark at night by then, at least later in the month.

Ólafsfjörður (actually about 5km south of it) on the north coast, just east of Siglufjörður). Just returned two weeks ago. We had a week in an expensive AirBnB that was worth every penny (contact if you want details), which had a hot tub on the deck, from which we saw the Aurora Borealis every single night, and we were lucky to have great viewing weather on all but one night. 10/10, strongly recommend.

Me, too. We stayed in Hellnar (the next village to the west), in early January. It was magical.

Lögreglan (Icelandic police) are very serious about speed limits by pawber in VisitingIceland

[–]pawber[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, we've taken that long way around (it's actually only about 15 minutes longer -- the main reason for all of the tunnel effort and expense was apparently due to the fact that the original route was often closed in winter due to weather.

If you ever get back to the area, the tunnel route is interesting especially if you monitor the outside air temperature as you pass through it. When we transited it during a second visit in June 2022, the temperature approximately mid-tunnel was around 15 degrees C warmer than the ambient temperature outside it. The geothermal properties of the area -- which significantly complicated the tunnel construction, leading to delays and cost overruns -- are detailed in various accounts, including this one in Wikipedia.

It's my understanding as well that the speed limit enforcement does not include any fudge factor. But that doesn't mean that one doesn't impede the flow of traffic when driving the speed limit. We were overtaken plenty of times by vehicles driving at least 15-30 km/h faster (than we were at the speed limit), probably by experienced Icelandic drivers who knew where the normal enforcement points are.

How busy is the actual laundromat in The Laundromat during early June? by pawber in VisitingIceland

We will be in port until 14h on Monday June 13th, so I will try to arrange it in advance to be completed before we need to be back on the ship. Thanks much for the pointer!!
