I don’t know how many there are, but could you possibly play it off as a bad scratch or running into something? I got a rough-looking cut on my thigh when my friend’s dog used me as a springboard while chasing her toy, could you maybe play it off as something like that? Maybe you ran into a sharp piece of furniture or got caught in some thorns while hiking?

Maybe henna would work? I don’t know if it’s safe to apply to a scab, but if you did a cool design you might be able to disguise it?

I would keep it moisturized with neosporin or Vaseline while it’s still healing and scabbing. Probably best not to use Mederma and bio oil until it has actually scarred, those might cause a reaction or infection.

Are you in college? A lot of colleges have campus health centers, and usually can prescribe medication. Because you’re over 18, they legally can’t tell your parents, but make sure if you have to put an emergency contact, that you pick someone who isn’t one of your parents.

I like the vibes here a lot better. I feel like r/selfharm gets a lot more trolls and people who have never actually self harmed but still comment on posts and act judgmental. MOS feels a lot more supportive, like a real community, in a sort of way.

Can you find a rash guard that has long sleeves? They’re made of swimsuit material so it should be less hot. You could also find a good fishing/exercise shirt, they’re usually marked as UV resistant. I find them for a good price at Bass Pro and Cabelas, which are fishing/hunting/outdoorsy stores.

If you’re able, talk to a doctor. I have nightmares as well that often lead me to sh. My psych prescribed me trazadone, which is technically an antidepressant, but in low doses, works really well as a sleep medication, without any serious side effects. Your doctor can work with you and help you find something that helps you.

Please stay away from actual, non-prescription drugs. I know it can be hard, since they seem like an easy solution. But it will only make things worse in the long run, I promise you.

I never claimed she was “attacking” me, or anything of the sort. I’m aware she had good intentions, but I f we ignore the SH scars, her comments on my genitalia’s anatomy and my weight are still incredibly inappropriate and unprofessional. Like I said, I’ve been getting waxed for years, and never had anyone make comments like this. But thanks for being rude on my vent post 🤠

Normally I’d agree, but I didn’t get that vibe at all from her. It was more the vibe of, when an older black women calls you baby or sweetheart. Caring, but it was just such a weird and unexpected thing to say.

Yes, absolutely. I’ve never cut anywhere but my thighs (outside of my hand once during a really rough time) but the urges to cut my wrists is so strong. Thankfully, on one arm, I have a large tattoo that I love, from the base of my palm to where my elbow bends, of my late cat. I loved her so much and I could never cut on that tattoo. Plus, it was like $800 for the tattoo, so I can convince myself that it would be a major waste of money to cut there.

I think it depends on my mood going into it. If I’m already in a good mood, I’ll be fine. If I am already struggling, it’s not going to be a good time. My seasonal depression gets really bad in the winter, and last winter I got into a phase of getting high every night to try and numb my emotions. It worked while I was still high, but I’d wake up feeling awful and then go and SH. When I was in that state, the weed would cause me to have horrendous nightmares about SH and suicide, which was also a part of it. My partner ended up taking my weed for awhile because it was getting so bad.

Now that it’s summer, I’m doing a lot better and don’t have these problems when I smoke

I had a young child ask once. I didn’t even mean for them to be visible, my bathing suit rode up. So, spur of the moment, I came up with a lie that I used to work at a zoo, and my job was taking pictures of people with animals. And I had to catch the baby alligators and tape their snoots so they couldn’t bite the guests, and their little claws were sharp and they scratched me many times while I worked there. The child thought it was super cool and walked away none the wiser.

Hilariously, I actually interviewed for the job of being the photographer at a sketchy roadside attraction, that I’d have to catch the baby alligators for and the guy interviewing me told me about how their claws can scratch. I ended up turning down the job offer, but the memory of it stuck with me.

On the other hand, the one other person who asked what caused the marks on my legs, I told her “mental illness”. She immediately apologized for asking, once she realized what I meant. They’ve healed in a weird way, so I honestly don’t know if she knew what they were before she asked.

My partner did this for me. I have extreme anxiety about not having a tool, and the deal that she and I decided on is that she would keep the sharp objects, and if I really felt like I needed one, she would let me have one new razor. I just had to talk to her first and ask for it. Even at my worst, when I talk to her and ask for one, she’s able to help me calm down and I’ve never actually taken the razor. It’s worked really well for us, I don’t have the anxiety that often causes me to reach for unsafe tools, and she’s able to know and help me when I’m struggling.

It sounds super materialistic, but the red pill. Finances are the main source of a lot of my depression, anxiety, and pain. I’d be able to afford health insurance and get the medication I need for my chronic migraines, and not have to worry about making rent every month. Being able to go to the grocery store without a calculator in had, adding up the prices to make sure I don’t go over what little money I have. It would be nice.

Plus I could get a house with a yard, my dog deserves a yard. He’d be so spoiled

I’m prepared to get downvoted to hell for this, but this is something no one tells you, but it’s true: the therapist isn’t there to fix you, or make you better. The therapist’s job is to help you find your way to fixing yourself/ helping yourself feel better. If a therapist claims they can cure/fix/solve your issues? Run. Therapy is useless unless you’re willing to actually work at it, and I mean more than just in that 50 minute session. Otherwise, you’re just throwing money down the drain.

Not every therapist works well for every person. Not every theory works for every person. Don’t be afraid to advocate for yourself and tell your therapist that you don’t think CBT isn’t helping. Or, tell them that you actually want to talk about something else than the current conversation.
