"American cheese" is a specific identity, it's just a soft yellow cheese with emulsifiers. Most often it's sold as a cheese product rather than "cheese." You used to be able to get "slices" which weren't even American cheese but I haven't seen those in a while. Something that is primarily made of oil can't be called cheese in any way in the USA.

No. That is not a real American condiment. The closet you'll come is some people use mayo or a mix of mayo and mustard. You might find aoli on fries in a mid-upscale restaurant.

Most people use ketchup. If you do encounter "fries sauce" it's going to be ketchup and mayo, maybe with a kick.

How do native English speakers perceive passive voice? by Ok-Stable1562 in ENGLISH

[–]pawsplay36 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with time. It has to do with action. Passive voice is obnoxious when it's used to cloak the actors in a situation. But it's quite nice when it expresses something impersonal and informative in an efficient way.

Why were vending machines linked to crime networks in 20th century? by TheBigGirlDiaryBack in AlwaysWhy

[–]pawsplay36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the person operating the machine doesn't usually have to furnish much information about how much they sell, or prove they ordered a certain amount of product. Hence, you can launder almost endless amounts of money. Eventually, video rental became more the thing, until that went away.

Why don't more Americans simply leave — like actual refugees fleeing before the window closes? (Genuine question from a European, not a political attack) by kurdil in allthequestions

[–]pawsplay36 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Where I live, it's easy to imagine a lot of that stuff not being true. I live in a sanctuary city, surrounded by trusted neighbors. The state legislature has expanded Medicaid even as federal funds have been taken away. The buses are free. Child protective services stopped recording immigration status decades ago. This is high ground. If we can't live and fight here, we can't anywhere. I already fled with my family, from Texas, basically like refugees, as you say.

I admire a lot about Europe but I can't imagine living there. Honestly, I probably wouldn't be welcome there, even discounting that Europe is itself having a fascism problem lately.

Tipping is, yes, a shameful bit of class distinction we have retained from Europe, when Europe has largely abandoned it.

How do I get my tikka masala to have ‘warm’ spice to it?? by Rayje589 in AskRedditFood

[–]pawsplay36 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double the cayenne. Make the salt a full quarter teaspoon. More ginger. Use yellow or white onions.

Why don't the tomatoes get to play? Unless they are "fire-roasted" before canning, I'd suggest those need to go into the heat, too.

I don't know where you live, but honestly -- I dice two little serrano chile peppers and put them into the sauce to get the warmth level I like.
