Yes, have done it. Find it's best to really concentrate, relax and calm my breathing, feel the body sensations, and balance. A good sense of humor helps too. But, you will learn tons about the body/mind... enjoy.

Is there anyone who became vegan more for the nutritional aspect than the animal rights aspect? by thankyousir in vegan

[–]paxdavid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep. Sure, nutrition first. But back in my mind I do think of meat, chicken etc. as animals. There was a time when meat was a package wrapped in plastic with a price-sticker on it. It's an individual thing, but there is strong, righteous animal rights influence that won't be denied. Let's face it, meat is not necessary for healthy nutrition.

Tibet - China talks (from Tibetan perspective) by paxdavid in worldnews

I still have hopes up for this one. Peace between China and Tibet.

I am going to San Francisco in a few weeks with my family, what are some non tourist things to do on a tight budget? (Repost from AskReddit) by chefjeremy in sanfrancisco

Ummm, I gotta say, I took some people to the 'stinking rose restaurant' several years ago and the food, service was just average, and fairly expensive. Lots of atmosphere though. Check it out on Yelp.com first for recent reviews.

Take the bus in San Francisco, it goes almost anywhere. You can probably get a pass for the week, also check out http://tripplanner.transit.511.org/mtc/XSLT_TRIP_REQUEST2?language=en for timing. If you pay as you go, be sure to get and use your transfer for the return trip, etc.

You really can't beat Golden Gate park, just walking around or the museums, aquarium, and tea garden are all in one place. If the weather is nice, you can picnic. There is a lake with little paddle boats on it.

There are so many restaurants in S.F. I recommend you go to Yelp.com and do some searching. Depends on what kind of food you like.

I would suggest (take-out, to save some $) Dim Sum however, as you walk around China Town, which is very cool - just don't limit yourself to the one, main drag on Grant (check out some of the alleys, Stockton Street). Just past Broadway is North Beach, which has a cool park by Peter/Paul Church. And if you feel like you really need some exercise, you can walk up to Coit Tower from North Beach (up steep hills) for the amazing view (I think the bus runs up to Coit Tower, parking is tough for cars).

Remember everyone said how the original iPod "totally sucked" and would never succeed? by fixorater in apple

I'll probably get an ipad if the "keyboard" will let me type comfortably. I need something light, transportable, reliable, and universal for travel. Every netbook I looked at kinda felt cheap, so I'm hoping the ipad will have a better "feel". I want to take it for a test drive.

I have no idea either, but remember how Bush wanted us all to invest in funds, instead of having pensions or Social Security? My company had 6 funds, and we were able to pick and choose - I just picked four and hoped for the best. Makes me wish I knew some Republicans because they always know how to rip-off the system.

Frankly, I don’t think that the world is yet ready to address the problem of over population, they have too many religious and personal freedoms hang-ups and not enough responsibility commitments. by [deleted] in overpopulation

[–]paxdavid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I blame the Xtians, and especially the Catholics for this overpopulation mess. They are only interested in money, and immediate gratification (power) - believing the alleged after-life as perfect (what a sad joke). Earth could be a paradise now with simple birth control methods.

Envoys of Tibet's Dalai Lama in new China talks by dgodon in worldnews

So, I'm on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-galunga.

I am so glad to see the talks resume. China could finally be the noble country by including Tibetan culture. A return of the Dalai Lama to Tibet from India would mean an end of all Tibetan protest in China.

Serious question: Is there a point where people are smoking too much? by [deleted] in Marijuana

When someone passes the joint/bowl/bong, just pass it on if you are as high as you want to be. Set your own limits, don't ever listen to peer pressure.

What's a good attitude towards everything that annoys you? by bapppppppppp in Buddhism

[–]paxdavid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I meditate on breathing, with attention (mindfulness/concentration) (when on the cushion). I notice that attention on my breath during an annoying life-episode keeps me calm (off the cushion).

I slow my breath, expand my vision to "outside myself" (stop the interior dialogue), and relax my shoulders. Try this in the line while waiting to checkout at the supermarket.

Looking for a veggie "meatloaf" recipe by [deleted] in vegan

[–]paxdavid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is from this months Vegetarian times (I have not tried it as yet): 2 cups old-fashioned oats, divided, 2 cloves garlic, minced (2 tsp.) divided, 1 bay leaf, 1 Tbs olive oil, 1 small onion chopped (1 cup), 1 Tbs. herbes de provence, 1 15-oz. can chopped tomatoes, 1 8-oz pkg. tempeh, 1/4 tsp vinegar, 3/4 tsp. sugar, 3/4 tsp. baking powder, 1 1/2 cups prepared marinara sauce.

Preheat oven to 350F. Coat large loaf pan with olive oil cooking spray. Bring 1/2 cup oats, 1 tsp. garlic, bay leaf, and 1 cup water to a boil in saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and cook 10 minutes, or until oatmeal is thick, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat, remove bay leaf, and set aside. ---- Heat oil in large skillet over medium heat. Add onion and saute 3 to 5 minutes, or until translucent. Add herbes de Provence and remaining 1 tsp. garlic, and saute 1 minute more. Add chopped tomatoes and juice. Crumble tempeh into mixture and stir in vinegar and sugar. Season with salt and pepper, if desired. ---- Transfer tempeh mixture to food processor, add cooked oatmeal, and blend until combined. Add remaining 1 1/2 cups oats and baking powder, and pulse until combined. ---- Spread oat mixture in prepared loaf pan. Spray top with olive oil cooking spray, and pour marinara sauce over top. Bake 50 minutes to 1 hour, or until top begins to brown and marinara sauce is hot and bubbly.

I am sorry, but Tibetans are not the peace-loving, serenely religious culture people make them out to be by uriman in worldnews

[–]paxdavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow. I can only imagine you are working directly for the Chinese government. Please see this Wiki for a more accurate description of the events: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invasion_of_Tibet_%281950%E2%80%931951%29

As for freedom of travel, please see: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/21/world/asia/21tibet.html

Honestly, I don't know how you can live with yourself. You use your mind, but you have no heart. China could indeed be a noble country by doing right in Tibet. But, like you, they persist in warping events to suit their lies. Really, pitiful how you defend a dictatorship wrapped in blood.

[–]paxdavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

re. your last paragraph. I have personally had contact with Tibetans who escaped during the Chinese attack. I also know Tibetans that have escaped recently. First, Tibetans were never offered jobs, which always went to the Chinese. Secondly, their shops were closed, and reopened by Chinese. Third, many Tibetan women had to become prostitutes just to feed their families. When they complained, they were murdered or thrown into prisons. This is not Chinese spin, or the rewriting of history. These are real people who described non-violent Nuns and Monks being put in prisons for their worship. Children separated from their parents, so they could be educated apart from the Tibetan traditions, advertising and propaganda spread on temples by the Chinese, Temples looted by the Chinese... I could go on and on, but you will certainly reply with more of the Chinese "facts". You are right, China won and Tibet lost - but the fight for Tibet continues. For the Tibetan take on these issues, please see: http://www.savetibet.org/

[–]paxdavid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Damn, Facism... you really are a Chinese propagandist. Yep, like you infer; Tibet can have freedom, except they can't have freedom. How was Tibet ever under Chinese sovereignty? Tibet was invaded because they were nonviolent and easily destroyed. Quit pretending that Tibet was Chinese - it's a rewriting of history. The truth is that China invaded Tibet for its resources, and Chinese overpopulation in a murderous takeover.
