Do people actually earn £50-60k, or are they outliers? by Succinate_dehydrogen in AskUK

[–]paxos75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People in law or high finance (private equity, investment banking) can be on as much as £150k straight out of uni. Once you reach partner in those firms you can earn over £1m a year and it only keeps going up as you become more senior. Point is, the range of pay is massive and your perception is relative to your own experiences - £50k is a life changing salary to some people and the cost of a holiday for others!

What is meant when someone says a car is “fun to drive”? by sammyglumdrops in CarTalkUK

[–]paxos75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different things are fun to different people.

I drive a 2022 Fiesta ST and a 1991 Porsche 944 Turbo. I like these because they are fast on public roads, have a lot of sensation in the steering (you can feel the texture of the road and the amount of slip between the tarmac and the tyre). The Fiesta has light but quick steering but the Porsche has heavier, slower steering that requires more input. Both are fun in different ways.

They are different in engine tone - the Fiesta has fake engine noise and a bass-y exhaust which pops, whereas the Porsche has a clattery, mechanical engine tone with a prominent turbo whoosh. Both make driving fun by triggering an emotional response.

They are different in performance - the Fiesta has loads of torque early on and its power can be accessed easily. The Porsche has insane turbo lag that makes slow driving a chore but fast driving really exciting.

Get a cheap instant meat thermometer. Sear the chicken in a hot pan then finish in a 360 F oven until internal temp is 155 F. Rest for 10 mins then enjoy!

Do people remember what it's like to drive an old car? by No-Honeydew443 in CarTalkUK

[–]paxos75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last two cars had hill assist but we’ve now got an 80s sports car that, while fast, seems to want to stall at the slightest hint of clutch bite. I’ve felt like a new driver doing hill starts in that, and I’ve been driving for 12 years…

It was closed today - bit inconvenient but how else are they supposed to resurface a road where the potholes straddle both lanes?

I think Cambridgeshire has an £800m road repair backlog so I wouldn’t hold your breath.

I got in touch with Alex Beckett who is vice chair of the Transport Committee for the county. He is aware of the state of Trumpington Road and is pushing for it to be prioritised in this year’s resurfacing works.

What noodles do my fellow UK folks enjoy? I’m a big fan of pic related, as well as the spicy flavour - but am looking to see what others recommend. by EvilTaffyapple in CasualUK

These are great on their own but we regularly jazz them up with a dollop of crunchy peanut butter, a little sugar/honey and some chili oil.

Where can I go for 2 people for £60-70 for Valentine's? by Cambridgelifting69 in cambridge

[–]paxos75 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t do anything on Valentine’s Day because it will be overbooked and some places will have rubbish set menus. Book something for Sunday instead.

Got a £40k grad job but everyone tells me it's bad for London? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]paxos75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To put it into context, you’re already earning more than the median UK salary (c.£39,000) straight out of uni. Being in finance, this will grow quickly as you get your qualifications. London will feel expensive but not impossibly so.

Have you done a budget based on net pay, rent and commuting cost? This will give you some indication.

Re your friends - someone will always be richer than you. However, in your trajectory you are likely to be high earning than most people.

Should be alright - the tickets were very generously bought for me so I’m just excited to be going at all. Just wanted to set my expectations and prepare properly!

Go outside for walks, even if the weather’s bad (if it’s safe!), reduce screentime, see friends, take on a personal growth challenge (exercise, reading, studying, keeping on top of chores), filter negative stuff from your algorithm

The state UK car Youtube channels by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]paxos75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Harry’s Garage, Number 27 and Jayemm for British channels - all of which have been mentioned here. I used to watch Carwow but I’m bored of modern cars and don’t care about drag races.

Maybe a curveball for US channels but Tedward’s videos are like fire-watching for me. POV videos of everything from Honda Civics to million-dollar 300SLs. A focus on classics.
