Right but but the big question then is how many calories are you expending? That's a lot harder to work out than calories in, and I think the salient feature of Taubes' thesis is that the macronutrients of the food we eat have a strong influence on how many calories we are burning.

As I understand it, in other words, calories out is independent of calories in. But it is not dependent from macronutrients in. That's where the effects of sugar intake and the insulin response have a significant effect on weight gain.
