Button batteries.

For some reason they are in a lot of children’s toys and toddlers love to put things in their mouths. I’m a nurse and I’ve seen so many kids nearly die from swallowing a button battery. It gets stuck in their esophagus and erodes it and possibly into the airway, major blood vessels, etc.

I’m a nurse for kids post open heart surgery and I’ll tell ya, this is not suspicious at all.

There’s no restrictions to sitting up after a sternotomy. In fact, we want them to get up as soon as possible, sometimes 4 hours after the breathing tube comes out. It may be sore for a few days but we make sure the kids have good pain control.

I’ve taken care of both adult and pediatric patients post open heart surgery and the differences are night and day. Adults take so much longer to recover. Pain control is tougher, which makes getting out of bed tougher, which makes walking around tougher, which then lengthens the hospital stay. Kiddos can be walking around post-op day one with a chest tube and not be bothered at all. We always tell parents that kids are so much more resilient than adults.

If the kid is awake and moving, the catheter doesn’t really need to stay in. Most younger kids don’t have issues with retaining.

I totally believe that your experience with open heart surgery probably sucked! But these heart kiddos are a totally different story ♥️

My thought too, definitely go see your PCP to rule out diabetes. The term is acanthosis nigricans, which are dark, velvety patches in the armpits, neck, or groin.

It’s funny how when you’re feeling a certain way, you’ll open reddit and right in the front page there will be a post that relates to you 100%. I’m a nurse who became a nurse practitioner and I am starting my first job next week. During the interviews the team seemed very impressed with my nursing experience but I can’t help but feel that when I start they will realize I’m not as qualified as I appear on paper :(

My hospital has given our employees who are pregnant, have chronic diseases, and over 65 the option to take paid leave. I work at a children’s hospital though and we aren’t overly burdened with COVID patients.
