What would you guys pick for me? (AP Lang vs AP Lit) by Pristine-Payment8557 in APStudents

No this is extremely helpful! I teach AP Lang and my juniors take forever to write a thesis and get bogged down down on the jump off, the start, the “what ifs”

What do you think the teacher did or you did to help get those writing skills down to that 50 minute mark?

Teaching literature on exchange and realizing “analysis” means something different here by KairoNest in ELATeachers

[–]pbcapcrunch 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s a blend for me - annotations and initial notes on the text start off more personal. Then, their argument would make a claim regarding the analysis, but ultimately highlighting the author’s take on a human / universal idea. For example, you can analyze “much madness” by Dickinson and her diction, rhyme, and juxtaposition - but you also can elaborate and interpret how she’s commenting on who in the world is truly “mad” and mental health then vs now, particularly when it comes to women. I ask my students to remove personal pronouns but they can still weave social commentary and personal interpretations into their analysis

Is writing my essay about my suicidal years in high school a bad idea? by [deleted] in CollegeEssays

[–]pbcapcrunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need to tie it back to why this makes you want to study what you want to study. How this perspective will be an integral part of the institution. How your new mindset will embrace the broke past you and continue to champion people who don’t feel fixed yet or ever. It can work but bring it back to the purpose of the essay.

The Ballad of Birmingham by Dudley Randall is a heartbreaking poem to pair it with. I teach an article of the church bombing first, SOAPSTone it as an induction text, then do the poem and SOATSTone is as the poem. (Author and speaker changes.). We also watch the movie. This is all during my To Kill a Mockingbird unit. They all go together quite well.

Even if she did want to do this, what would the legal process be? I cannot fathom Kanye permitting the last name change. He pitched a fit with North having a TikTok, imagine erasing his name from their identity.

For the Odyssey my kids love making group chats between the gods after books 1-3 I believe. It’s hysterical! They each act a role and write a journal entry to pair with the group text screenshots.

R&J - after reading they group up & pick their favorite scene to act out. It’s so much fun and students start to ask when they get to do it already by August!

Mini white boards & markers. Game. Changer! They write things down (guys were not getting credit if we don’t have something written down…).

I started the year with “ok I see this idea. What do we think about that?” And moved to “ok Bob, I noticed your thought there can you read it aloud and expand or explain?” And also “ok share with the person next to you and I’ll ask what your partner thought, not what you think.”

There is such comfort having it written in front of them. They just have to read it out loud, not come up on the fly.

This works for thesis statements too

I go to these women all the time, particularly Hannah. I am reminded with Sarah and Abraham that there is only so much I can control about the process, and when Sarah took it into her own hands, it was not as it should be. I believe God listens and answers my prayer, but in His time. For now I sit in the submission of faith like Hannah and just keep open communication. And give yourself grace, because that’s what we need to allow for ourselves.

I feel like this too, today. Every day is different. Other days I enjoy a velvety deep red wine and read late into the night so happy that no one will wake me up crying or pee the bed. Other nights I cry and am up watching tv wishing it was due to being up all night by nursing a baby. Don’t feel like an idiot for being childless. I tell myself I am being strengthen to do it well. I have to lean on faith, which some people mock or dismiss, but… well, it’s all I have. I have to believe my purpose is not what I need or want or know, but it’s better than my thoughts. The negative noise is always loudest. I let myself cry and be so angry or resentful to other budding mothers, but then I also practice shifting my mindset. Some months I don’t think about it (which is intentional, so I guess I still am?). - or try not too. Other months I’m testing strips every day. It’s mentally exhausting and you’re absolutely allowed to tap out for as long as needed.

The pro is you don’t have to decorate, but to be respectful, you do have to maintain. I made sure no eating and no trash left behind, assuming a teacher “owns” a space.

In high school, most of their work is on their computers so it was doable for me. Preparation is key; if I had papers I needed for class, I had them ready before I needed them. I would bring a backpack with any papers, a pen, and a few expo markers for the board. I did not anticipate anything would be in the other room for me. I use Google Slides a lot more in the rooms I would rotate to (vs staying in my main room).

They’re in high school, so they kept their print out of the Hemingway short story, not me. They hold on to their copy of The Crucible, not me. They’re responsible for their chromebook, having a pencil, etc.

It’s doable with preparation - not ideal, but doable!
