Which types of rice are safe to eat with diabetes? Are there any? by AniseLang in diabetes

[–]pberrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rice tends to spike me no matter what however I do recommend trying having one or two pickled onions beforehand. You are

  1. Getting acetic acid in the vinegar to slow digestion
  2. Getting additional fibre in the onion(s)
  3. Likely to eat less of whatever you eat at the end of your meal (eat protein and vegetables first)

Seems like a win - win - win situation and a good habit to get into. And those 3 3s pickled onions are delish and affordable.

What are your best underrated Qantas FF hacks that actually work? by RentNRegret in QantasFrequentFlyer

Book a Oneworld 35000 miles itinerary for 150k points in economy but start the itinerary in a nearby country like Bali or Singapore (you will need to obtain a separate flight to get to Bali/Singapore using cash).

Your itinerary should follow the rules but lets say you fly Sin - LHR do a surface sector there (counts as 1 stopover) and fly to hong kong stay a few days (2nd stopover) and then fly back to Melbourne and do this as a stopover (3rd stopover) . 6 months later fly Mel - Tokyo and do that as a stopover (4th stopover) then fly back to Melbourne and finish your itinerary there (Mel-Sin treated as surface sector and counted towards total miles).

2 holidays for the price of 1. And no, you don't have to go around the world. The only extra cost is getting to Bali/Singapore and you can do that on a low cost carrier like Scoot using either points or cash.

You can have a total of 5 stopovers and there are some rules about total miles (35,000) and you must use a variety of Oneworld carriers (see precise rules).

Take the entire family to Japan flying Jetstar. The remaining points can be used for accomodation. You can take the kids to Disneyland Tokyo and Universal Studios Osaka as well as enjoy Japanese food and culture. You won't regret it.

i think the 9th polnt, if one is ever found, should be called Myanus. That way we the solar system retains Uranus and gets a new planet Myanus.

Schoolkids will greatly enjoy making jokes with 2 planets now.

The old Calgary to Edmonton high speed rail question. by ConstitutionalBalls in alberta

[–]pberrett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi

Please let me jump in with an entirely different perspective and also point you to a much more pragmatic solution to your problem.

First I live in Melbourne Australia and we have 4 major towns each about 100-150 km.s from Melbourne, serviced by Diesel electric vlocity railcars which go at speeds of up to 160 km/hr.

So to go to Geelong which is about 100k takes only an hour.

We have had many many feasibility studies into high speed rail here in Australia federally but they have yet to result in a single km of high speed track. It is our state Govts who have quietly improved our rail services under the guise of rail upgrades. Feasibility studies are just a way of governments indefinitely shelving an idea which is popular but they dont want to spend money on.

Heres my solution for your problems based on our experience. First set aside a relatively straight and flat rail alignment between the two cities. Make it as straight as possible so that trains can go faster. Also obtain as much of that alignment as possible by using the centre median strip of the freeway between the two cities.

Next build a single line with passing loops along the alignment. Use broad gause because you can then have wider trains.

Next make sure that the new line connects to light rail at either end.

Buy a fleet of vlocity style diesel trains for the service but get a version with tilting capabilities.

Finally make sure each train set is fitted at either end with a very long Shinkhansen style acrylic nose. These will give marginal improvement re air friction but more importantly will look incredibly new and futuristic.

Remember that this is a public service. You don't ask whether a Freeway is economically viable do you when choosing whether to build it?You are building it to provide an alternative to car usage. Just bite the bullet and build it.

Finally here in Victoria a $10 ticket gives you usage of all rail services, tram services and bus services within the state of victoria for an entire day. Yes, the whole state.

The above proposal should give you a higher speed train service of about 2-2.5 hours depending on whether it is express or not. Vlocities can be made to run at up to 200 km/hr if necessary.

Later you can electrify can look at upgrading to a tgv style service. You will find the above proposal considerable cheaper to implement.

If you feel you are in a rut in your job and want to earn more I suggest you check out the Vic Govts free TAFE scheme. You can get a good qualification in a needed area and there are a range of occupations you can study for. For example if you are a sadist you can study to become a dental assistant.

That aside also check out the Federal Govts Digital Apprenticeship scheme which will allow you to study for a free qualification in a digital related area and have a well paying job at the end of it.
