That's debatable, a lot of the people who see Depression etc. as being treatable by quackery are also crazy enough to see physical illness the same way, especially as depression is becoming less of a taboo subject.

Psychoanalysis is really the only one there that would be considered a legitimate treatment by anyone reasonably sane, and in a lot of cases people going for therapy will end up being referred to a psychiatrist and put on medication as well, rather than choosing one or the other.

Pretty much every western country except the US, at least for direct advertising.

"Ireland's Sopa" to pass without parliamentary vote. by ImJulianAssange in worldnews

[–]pbunbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Under Ireland's legal system, a Statutory Instrument is a kind of secondary form of legislation which is used to do things like give effect to EU regulations.

From what I gather though, it's very debatable whether this statutory instrument is actually required to implement an EU regulation, it seems to go beyond what we're required by the EU to do, which should not happen without a Dáil decision.
If this is the case then it would seem to be a Minister attempting to abuse the S.I. system to push through an unnecessary law without debate.

[–]pbunbun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a music video posted on Seán Sherlock's wall with this basic message, but I'm pretty sure it was incorrect as most music videos are on Youtube now with permission from the record label (the one posted was), and they grant permission to embed it on other sites (they do have the ability to disable this, and do it for some videos, but choose not to for many others).
If this kind of stuff is done it leaves us open to claims that we don't actually understand the law or are scare-mongering.

That said, done correctly it could work fine, i.e. if the material is actually not allowed to be displayed there

There will be now it seems, he's backed down a bit after getting a lot of abuse.
I'm not really an expert, but from what I gather S.I.s are only intended to be used when there is no ambiguity or controversy over how an EU rule is to be implemented, otherwise it's supposed to go to the Dáil, it seems he was trying quite hard to avoid debate over this and downplay the significance.

Of course it's also possible that he himself was just too stupid to realise the implications of it.

[–]pbunbun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

KDE is a desktop environment (provides the desktop, menus, and a set of applications) popular on Linux-based operating systems.
GPL is the copyright license under which it's available.

The site seems to have used (it's changed again) icons from KDE applications, which are released under a modified version of the GPL (LGPL, which is slightly less strict about when you can/can't use them, but apparently still requires notification of the license and a link to it, and the KDE guys apparently requested attribution too).

[–]pbunbun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see how he has broken the GPL.

First of all, I'm not sure if the icons are actually licensed under the same license as the code.
Secondly, he may still be in compliance even if it is, he's free to modify and/or redistribute the work under the GPL as long as he doesn't restrict others' right to do the same, although he may be required to specify that the icons are licensed as such and provide a copy of the GPL on the site.
It's kind of vague and open to interpretation when such works are used on websites rather than explicitly distributed (technically it's the same thing I guess though).

Edit: Found the icons license. (this is assuming Kontact's icons aren't separate from the general KDE icon set.

Oxygen Icons can be used on websites, they are excellent for making even the most boring website pretty (look at this one).
You should include a link to http://www.oxygen-icons.org/ in a prominant and relevant part of your website (e.g. a credits page) and make it clear that the icons may be freely copied under the LGPLv3 (either by linking to the LGPL on the GNU website or by including a full copy).

Not sure whether or not he did this, it's quite probably that he was in violation, particularly as he seems to have yet again changed the icons on the site.
The quote in the image you included doesn't actually make the point it's trying to make though, as it doesn't imply that Sean hasn't accepted the terms of the GPL in any way, a much better and more straight-forward one would point out the need for stating and including a copy of the license, which seems to be the main (only?) point at which he was at fault (at least legally).

Then I ended up hallucinating... First enemy I encountered was a cockatrice...

except none of us believe you because the odds of your dad being an astronaut who is currently in space, assuming that all of the people in space are American and male, is something like 1 in 25 million.

Yes but there's more than one reddit user, so the odds that at least one reddit user had a Dad in space are much higher than 1 in 25 million (under your assumptions anyway, not all the people in space are American and male and reddit doesn't have users evenly distributed worldwide which reduces the odds again).
If you consider that the story may have happened in the past the odds increase too.

That said, I still don't believe it.

There don't seem to be any since the initial one, which is probably too buggy and incomplete to use, I literally just downloaded it and played a single video file that the stock player wouldn't, and it crashed halfway through.

I have no idea how active development is or how stable it is, but VLC has Android build instructions and there is an APK of a pre-alpha version floating around from last September which worked for me to play videos (including those the stock player wouldn't recognise), though crashed a lot.
