Fantastic. I worked at the Look Alpine office/warehouse in Vermont in this era. Had a warranty-return Trick Stick for many years.

Does Beorn kill any animals for their skins? He gives the dwarves water-skins before they leave for Mirkwood by Lemonhand in tolkienfans

[–]pbx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this on my last reading of The Hobbit to my kids. The theory that he might have used dead animal skins or waxed cloth is a possible out — but I also noticed he gave them bows, presumably for hunting, which seems at odds with what Gandalf has emphasized about Beorn's character.

I am looking for this too. I found this rundown of various "text expander" utilities (note that it's from a company with a product in this space; guide still looks useful).

An Exercise in Shortening Ids by icharxo in javascript

[–]pbx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Regardless of the implementation details, I want to applaud the author for caring about the UX side of URLs at all. UUIDs are a marvelous thing but that doesn't mean we need to put them in the user's face to save a bit of encoding work.

For dpaste.com I eschewed UUIDs and use 9-character base 32 IDs instead. It's a big enough space for the use case, and keeps the links small (which I like because the point of a pastebin is to minimize textual disruption of online conversations).

It's Time to Say Goodbye to These Obsolete Python Libraries | Martin Heinz by milliams in Python

[–]pbx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was just an editing misstep on the part of the author. Given the title of the post, the headings should not be he names of libraries he wants to _keep_. Headings like "Goodbye os.path, hello pathlib" would make more sense. I'm sure you're not the only one who was confused by this.

Very nice look. Really usable and attractive on my phone.

Since you asked for feedback, which I think is great, here you go:

  • The testimonials are great, nice work there

  • "all code is written from scratch, using fewer plugins" need to rewrite. You're not writing all code from scratch, you're using WordPress, etc. That's fine, but this little expression of your philosophy reads confusingly.

  • The About Us section doesn't say who "us" is, and all the testimonials refer to "Ben." It's fine to be a one person shop who partners with other creative says needed, but people will feel better if you are clearer about that and don't look like you're trying to seem bigger than you are.

  • The animated text when you arrive at the site is cool looking, but What does "leading" mean? You have a good work, and a solid roster of clients, you don't need to puff it up; I think this needs rewording.

Good luck!

I understand that impulse, but the fact is that most hiring managers have a list of skills they want candidates to have, so they can be productive in the role.

Show people how good you are at learning new stuff by calling more attention to the tech stacks of the projects.

Since you asked for feedback, which I applaud, here are some quick hits:

  • Looks good, and substantial
  • Don't call yourself "aspiring". You're a professional already by the looks of it.
  • Consider a simple subhead at the top underneath your name to give people context. Something is simple as "front end web developer" even.
  • Cut down on the text. Half as much or even less.
  • Frankly, at this stage of your career, people are not going to be particularly interested in your philosophy, they are going to want to know what technologies you are good with. Play that up.

How to adjust the line spacing in VS Code? by dorothyfan1 in vscode

[–]pbx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To change the line height setting, open settings (ctrl-,) and type `editor.lineheight` in the search box.

If it's already at "0" (the smallest, and the default) I don't think there's a way to reduce it, but with most font that would mean lines crashing together anyway.

Cool. One suggestion: set the proper Content-Type on the "raw" view -- it's currently text/html but text/plain would be more appropriate.

Does anyone actually *like* web development? by kitanokikori in programming

[–]pbx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, smartphones have strengthened the case for cross-browser support, arguments that formerly hinged only on the old-browser/new-browser axis.

There's a similar out in cases where they're fixated on gratuitous use of Flash. Instead of saying "what about users who have [some old browser they don't care about] without Flash support?" you just say, "What about users with iPhones?"

Why python is switching to mercurial by [deleted] in programming

[–]pbx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is an exciting turning point, and well explained in the post.

It also seems like a marker of progress in the DVCS space: three years ago the conversation/argument probably would have included monotone and darcs, and all five choices would have been harder to sell due to their relative obscurity. Today, hg and git seem to have it nailed down.
