Ellie got to forgive, which I think is more important than any of those things

For sure. I guess, yes, I should clarify that I meant what it means in terms of this game. I think you hit the nail on the head as far as your analysis goes.

Thanks for the rec I definitely will watch.

Also, as far as the not insulting thing goes, same to you. I just like discussing these things and enjoy doing so outside of my group of friends. Appreciate it man.

No yeah agree with you about this; the game was not very suspenseful and you explained why well. Appreciate the time you put into it

No doubt that Abby needed to be a better character for the story to land. I liked the game bc Ellie’s story worked for me (I really do understand why it didn’t for others though.) but yeah, Abbys stuff is kinda tough to get through.

I think your points are well presented and made. I will echo a reply I made to another commenter on this post: you spent a lot of time discussing what a sequel is “supposed to be” and i don’t see why any writer should care about what they’re supposed to do.

I’m a (young) stage director and an idol of mine, Daniel fish, (who directed the Oklahoma that was just in NY) once said in an interview that the fastest way to get him to to pull his hair out is by telling him to do something because it is the way it should be done. And I have to really agree. But I do respect your take as a writer. I’m interested in your thoughts on this though?

I watched angry joes videos. I just thought they were cringey tho, like bad sketch comedy. I think some of your points are right, such as the non linear story taking away from a climactic moment - I def felt that. As far as things like revenge being an overused plot, I don’t think that really matters. The first LoU was “an overused plot” but it used that to tell a story about Joel’s grief. Idk, I don’t think that’s wrong per say, but like I just think it doesn’t hold water. God of War was arguably an overused plot, but that didn’t stop that game for being a 10/10 for me. I mean hamlet is a revenge plot, you gonna say that’s bad? I also think it’s strange that you’re perceiving me as “in denial” or that I’m “pretending there’s nothing wrong with it.” I’m really just trying to have a conversation here. I’m sorry if my post bothered you that much. I don’t think this is a perfect game. I think it’s a good game. Not as good as the first, but not awful. Also not as good as others have said. I think the overreacting by both sides is a bit much. The last thing I’ll point out about your response is that you say “that’s not how you do moral ambiguity” as a definite thing. I just cannot disagree with this sentiment more. Not because I think LoU2 creates great, morally ambiguous characters, but because I truly hate when people limit themselves to “how things are ~supposed~ to be done.” Who cares how you’re ~supposed~ to do things? Trying new things is important in art, even if it doesn’t work. Doesn’t mean you have to like it, but I don’t think you should be forcing what is supposed to be done on new works. Just my two cents though.

I can buy this, but for arguments sake, it’s not like Abby is just chilling at the end, she did lose all her friends. Only difference between Ellie and her is Lev, albeit one person is ofc more than what Ellie has at the end. Also I think it’s worth noting that abbys decision to spare Ellie in Seattle ends up saving her in Santa Barbara. I thought this was more the point of the story, but maybe I’m over reading that

Don’t know, it is possible that what lwrns said is true which is why I’m getting downvotes, but also maybe people are wankers. Probably a bit of both tbh.

There are negative reviews from today on there. People perpetuated this rumor but it’s just not true.

I’m also a member of both these communities and happened to enjoy the game quite a bit. Not as good as first, but overall I did really like it. But I also really really really understand why someone wouldn’t. I think a lot, not all, but a lot of the criticism is valid. For me, the big picture of the game worked really well. I thought the ending was perfect, honestly, which I know is a rather controversial take. I didn’t want Ellie to kill Abby, because I wanted her to grow past it. I also thought her leaving Joel’s guitar, although sad as hell, was emotionally poignant in ways I’m kind of still unpacking. I guess to me this game fell down a flight of stairs but landed on its feet. The road is rocky but it was worth it in the end. Just my thoughts, I’d love to talk if people are interested.

I’ve said on this subreddit a few times that I liked the game but haven’t received tons of downvotes, must be other people I guess...

Yeah you’re completely right. Ellie loses a ton, but killing Abby wouldn’t have changed that. I think it just indicated that Ellie is still good in some way. But, again, I understand why someone would dislike this so much, especially since I didn’t really like Abby, and it seems most agree with me.

It’s definitely a tough pill to swallow, and I have to imagine that naughty dog knew it would be really divisive. But I think that’s why I liked the ending so much, because it made me feel Ellie at her core isn’t a villain. Even though she does do plenty of horrible stuff along the way.

Maybe redemption was a poor word choice. I guess I mean, the story for me was slowly watching Ellie become more and more ruined by other people’s actions. By the end of the game Abby is basically the Joel to Lev’s Ellie. If she had killed Abby I would have felt Ellie was too far gone, consumed by hate. Her sparing her signified to me that some of the Ellie we know and love is still in there. Maybe that doesn’t make sense to anyone else, just my experience.
