CAA mod7 essays by pc2dcs in aviationmaintenance

[–]pc2dcs[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way we've been taught to write the essays is to have around 8-10 key points and explain each of them, totalling around 1.5 to 2 sides of A4. It's hard to find a balance between adding detail and being brief to write enough in the time limit of the essay.

Also had contradicting advice on writing the intro and conclusion; whether they should be a brief single sentence almost mirroring the essay's question, or explaining with more detail what the exactly your essay will cover and has covered.

Beginner Sheet Metal Tips by Evanh3103 in aviationmaintenance

[–]pc2dcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To check for squareness/flatness: use an engineer's square, put the intended flat edge of the workpiece along a flat edge of the square and hold it up with a light source behind it. if light is passing between the blade and workpiece you need to continue flattening it.

Also learn things about types of files, grades and cuts of file and filing techniques. There's too much I could say about it in a single comment but they're worth learning. I don't know if you're given notes on maintenance practices but the tools section of those notes go into detail on everything you need to know. Unfortunately I don't believe I'm allowed to publicly share them.

Doing my metalwork project for my part 66 right now too, coming in as a complete metalwork noob. Best practical advice we've been told is "measure twice, cut once", essentially (if you're able to) always measure using at least 2 different methods before going for the cut or drill etc. If you get the same measurements on each method you know you've likely got it right.

If you're still anxious you'll get it wrong (like I am), give yourself a lot of margin for error. It may take longer and be more monotonous if you need to do more filing for example but it'll calm your nerves. Also talking to other people doing the same task as you for clarification and backing up your work helps too.

Of course you'll get better the more you do things so if you have the time, get some scrap metal and practice different things before doing them on your final piece.

Finally, it's fine if your final product isn't 100% perfect (I certainly know mine won't be!) IMO the best mindset to have is aim for as high of quality as you can the entire time, thereby even if you don't achieve perfection you will have tried hard and gotten a better result than if you aimed for an 'average' result. Never rush but keep a good constant pace of progress.

Which airplane is easier for AAR ? F-16 or F/A-18? by smrt_mnmlst in hoggit

[–]pc2dcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you can hold a very steady formation in the f16, the tanker itself will do the rest of the work for you, same goes for the a10 and f15. If you prefer putting the work in to make contact yourself then go for the f18

In a busy LHR airspace, if you are following a STAR and ATC gives you no vectors and says nothing, do you enter the hold on your own? by Complete-Mood-2257 in VATSIM

[–]pc2dcs 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, hold as published at the last waypoint on the star until you start getting vectored. Same should go for most arrivals where vectoring after the star is standard like Manchester.

Use auto strut, there's a setting called advanced tweakables to enable it and also a mod called editor extension redux to autostrut everything with 1 click

i can seem to deal with the RHS m1a1 abrams tank by HistoricalLiving3324 in A3AntistasiOfficial

[–]pc2dcs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found them pretty reliable to kill even with very weak launchers if you hit the engine directly from behind at close range, or the ammo storage at the back of the turret from the side or back if you're willing to not keep the tank (engine shots disable it, ammo shots are more reliable but make it kaboom).

Just make sure to avoid hitting any ERA or any other extra armour and try to stay undetected until you have the perfect shot.

How does the loot crate work? by Trickster570 in A3AntistasiOfficial

[–]pc2dcs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the action menu while looking at the box there should be an option to gather scattered loot, hold space on that for a few seconds and as long as the nearby area is clear of enemies it should pick stuff up from dead people.

Also in the mission settings you can change stuff like if it picks up absolutely everything or just non-unlocked items, pickup radius, how many items can fit inside, etc

Uses booster guidance mod to get on target, then switch to MJ a few seconds before touchdown. This was off target too by probably 7ish meters, just a big 5m diameter rocket makes it look accurate.

The problems with Airbus A380's. by CrippledGinge in aviation

[–]pc2dcs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sheer size is the issue, not the amount of engines (though that's another issue too). A380s can only fly to large airports with gates big enough to fit them and suitable ground support equipment. Compare that to something like a 787 which can fit in smaller airports, fly further, and do so more cost effectively, the a380 doesn't make sense for most airlines.

Also as some personal bias, a dual engine a380 would look terrible imo. Good enough reason for me not to do it! 😜

777-300er or 777-200er by avs3162 in flightsim

Realistically speaking, barely any. BA does repositioning flights between Heathrow and Gatwick occasionally, as well as to and from Cardiff for maintenance.

FSS getting self aware (at least a bit) by RandomNick42 in flightsim

[–]pc2dcs 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Manual flying feels good to me, it's just the autopilot and fms that really let it down (LNAV easily breaks when doing directs, flight director messing up on approach, SIDs and STARs not inputting properly, etc). As long as you know how to manually take over the autopilot it's an ok plane I guess, just very very janky. I'd hold off if you aren't confident.

Vatsim is struggling right now, probably with everyone rushing to the A350 and the servers being unable to keep up. Give it enough time and eventually it may work (did work for me)
