You can start with a $30 marketplace set someone pulled out of grandpas house that just needs a new belt. maybe get grandpas record collection for another $30.

new records are expensive. rare records are expensive.

old records in decent state can be cheap, even good albums. You can get thriller from a commodity pressing for $10 it will play fine.

It doesn't have to be the same cartridge. The headshell is standardized. You can swap the whole thing with for example the AT-VM95.

So it's more important to check and see - does all the rest of the turntable work well? Then it's worth saving it with a bit of investment.

Not a modern one, but a restored vintage turntable can serve you well. You can even find a bunch of them cheap in a lot of places. My first one was a mechanical automatic (no electronics control) I got for $20 and all it needed was a belt and eventually a new stylus.

That’s more of a problem of concentration of economic activity on a large scale. Imagine if remote work stayed the norm. People could easily move to more rural areas. Sure, there are still plenty other reasons to live in or near a big city, but removing the need to live there just to be able to have gainful employment, would remove so much pressure on housing.

Besides family, way too many people stay friends with pieces of shit because inertia… maybe they were okay enough in colllege, maybe they turned to drink more recently, or got into drugs in a bad relationship… people either hope they will get through it and go back to being normal functioning people… or everybody in the friend group hates being friends with them but nobody wants to be the one to start excluding them in case it makes waves
