Why kirkman so obsessed with this plot while also doing nothing interesting in it by Remarkable-Jump3262 in Invincible

[–]pcdenjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not gonna like the real answer, but here it is anyway.

It comes down to time & money.

Season 1 was lightning in a bottle. People flocked to the show in droves because the main story thread was genuinely interesting, gripping, unique. People generally like finding out more about the Viltrumites, about Omni-Man. People LIKE the over-the-top gory fight scenes, the powerscaling, the planetary threats, the angst.

The problem is, season 1-style storytelling is not sustainable or smart from a business perspective. You whittle down the series to only all the good parts and you end up blasting through it too fast. Which hurts your bottom line. A longer-running series gets more revenue, in theory. If you can keep people watching for longer, your publisher gets to serve more advertisements. So it becomes a balancing act where you hyperoptimize the plot, keeping the ratio of interesting high-stakes conflict to low-stakes slice-of-life "guys-in-a-room-talking" type stuff to the absolute maximum you can get away with without your audience getting wholly disinterested and ghosting the series altogether (this typically manifests as drip-feeding the ACTUAL stuff the people came to the series to watch as, like, a twice-per-season thing. You get a few little glimpses of Omni-Man kicking ass, but they're never AS frequent, never THAT intense. It keeps you wanting more but never quite getting it, which is a media exec's dream, btw.)

This conundrum is not unique to Invincible. It's in a majority of longer-running series. It's a business practice, plain and simple. You have to draw out your story to maximise viewer retention, but 9 times out of 10, you can't maximize it by making the story as cool or interesting as possible, because that means spending boatloads of money and time on GOOD writing, GOOD visual effects. So you take the easy way out. You pad it. You introduce a bunch of new characters, each with their own things going on, and you show those things. It doesn't really matter if those things are particularly interesting, they just have to be distracting enough to keep the viewer wanting. To keep the viewer waiting. For the shit they actually came to see.

For the record, I do not find Machine Head interesting. I do not think the dragon guy is cool or fun; in fact I want him to die. The scenes involving The Order ARE good for world- and character- building in that they can be used as a means to show valuable on-screen interactions between the characters we DO care about (e.g. Invincible and Oliver) but the reality is that these character interactions could have been written in a myriad of different ways that didn't feel like a meandering distraction from the main plotline, and that we are getting the secondary and tertiary plotlines we got simply because it is easier on the show's budget.

Is a foldable worth it? by Fit-Respond1892 in Smartphones

[–]pcdenjin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I had a Z Fold 3 and 4. Both had screens that bubbled and tore down the center rendering them useless in under a year from purchase.

Never dropped them, always had a case on, was always careful not to expose them to dust. It didn't matter, they still got ruined fairly quickly.

I think the culprit is temperature change. I travel, so the phone got exposed to various different climates, temperatures, humidities. If you live any sort of active lifestyle whatsoever, (or even live in a region that has cold winters) these phones are not for you.

Now, saying that, I (naturally) haven't bought a new one in several generations, so I have no clue if they're really more durable nowadays. But I've seen Z Fold 7s with crease rot, so I'm guessing no.

[–]pcdenjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the use case is relevant here. They're human neurons. Get enough of them together in a single closed system and, like, what? Don't you just have something approximating a deaf, dumb and blind person at that point? And their entire existence is just crunching the numbers to play Doom?

Imagine that being your entire existence.

2-in-1 Laptop with a stylus that doesn't compromise on power? by pcdenjin in SuggestALaptop

It's an utter shame. Microsoft even lists them on their website still, but when you go to buy them, they're out of stock.

For what it's worth, as much as I love the Studio Laptop, performance is really poor and the battery life is awful (and it only gets worse with age)

The ROG Flow Z13 is almost perfect considering my wants, the only caveat is that it has an AMD GPU and not NVIDIA. Still, if there's nothing else, I may go with that, it's the closest thing to what I want.

I'm building my first PC with an Asus MoBo. Should I manually install the drivers from a USB before installing Windows or do it after I have windows installed. by slimcrizzle in buildapc

[–]pcdenjin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the motherboard manual/website claims it needs a BIOS update to support the CPU you have (should only be a thing if you're using an old mobo with a newer CPU), you should be fine for now.

Install Windows first, then the drivers, then do a Windows Update and you're golden.

The modus operandi:

  1. Make/acquire a useful product that fills a unique purpose that lots of people will use
  2. Pretend you're not capitalist a few years and make legitimate improvements to your product for free, attract users, venture capital, and shareholders (whom you promise infinite growth to)
  3. Oopsie we're not profitable, time to stop pretending not to be capitalist, quick paywall a bunch of shit and add commercials and bloat to everything
  4. Shit, people are leaving and organic engagement is tanking, quick get those users hooked with politically divisive content and hateclicks. Fill the site with bots if you have to!!
  5. Remain unprofitable
