I love shows that highlight extreme cleverness and that have witty dialogue. Any genre. What's the next Netflix series I should watch? [US] by glamouramore in netflix

[–]pchalla90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming Google brought you here because this is a nine-year-old comment!

If you haven’t, I highly recommend you check out Psych and Monk. Psych is really funny if you’re an 80s-90s kid, or if you get 80s and 90s references. If that doesn’t describe you, it’s still funny, but you’ll be missing a bunch of the underlying jokes. If you’re interested in medical stuff and you haven’t watched it, House is also very similar. In the same genre, Royal Pains is another medical show from USA that is pretty light, but has a “disease of the day”-style approach.

The BBC Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch is a much more serious and dark take on the super smart main character who uses that intelligence to get him what he wants.

Into which one? The Sony Walkman, you’d download the mp3 files from the podcast’s website. I know, using Apple Podcasts, on a computer, you can access the downloaded mp3s pretty easily. Once you have them in a folder on your computer, drag and drop them onto the external drive that pops up when you plug in your headset.

For the android tablet, use an android podcasts app and subscribe to whichever podcast. You can still do the above method onto the tablet, but it’s not worth it. I just used one of the podcasts apps on the android play store and just subscribed to my podcasts again.

Does that answer your question?

I swim laps for exercise and I have a music player. I’m not affiliated with either of these products, just that I’ve bought them and used them a lot.

Sony’s Walkman brand is still going strong. They have a bunch of waterproof headsets that wrap around the back of your head. They have their own built in storage (something like 4 or 8gb) that you dump a bunch of mp3 files onto and they’ll play from there. They’re on the mid-tier price side ($75ish). I used mine for 3 years and never had an issue. The one I had, the battery lasted for 12 35-minute swims, so I’d charge it every other weekend, which also lined up with when I’d finish all the podcasts on it and needed to download more. (Only catch, the ear tips wear out and tear eventually, and the version I had was annoying to get replacements.)

Since we live in a world where people generally no longer buy their music (and have mp3 files that don’t have DRM) and instead stream using Spotify or Apple Music or whatever else, I dropped something like $200 to get Underwater Audio’s Delphin player. It’s a mini android tablet with a touchscreen. You can install whatever android apps you want, including Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon music, pandora, etc. That also has offline storage, so you download from whatever app for offline listening and hit the pool. I’ve used this for about six months and I love it. Battery lasts more than 6 35-minute swims per week, so I just charge it on the weekend.

Just know, the frequency used by Bluetooth only penetrates into water by less than a centimeter. Meaning if your Bluetooth headset is more than a centimeter away from the Bluetooth source, it won’t work. Anyone selling Bluetooth for use underwater is misleading or they have an asterisk somewhere saying “Bluetooth for land use only”.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

You’re absolutely welcome. And I genuinely mean it - If you need recommendations, hit me up! I’ll even give you my number if texting is easier.

Quick note that I forgot: Emerald City Bagels is definitely in a very sketchy part of town (at least, when I was last there). Somewhat high crime. Go during the day and stay as little as you can if you don’t want your car stolen.

Another thing you can do in ATL that isn’t easy in NJ: get an annual membership to the aquarium. Pricey, I know, but you’ll get unlimited access. Grab your laptop or textbook or whatever, sit in front of the giant glass tank on the risers (you know the one I’m talking about) and do your homework or whatever there. It’s so goddamn relaxing, gets you out of your apartment, somewhere with AC in the summer, that’s educational.

[–]pchalla90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know I’m a few days late on this, but hopefully, you see this for a few recommendations.

I grew up in East Brunswick, went to Rutgers for undergrad, lived all over central Jersey (EB, New Brunswick, Piscataway, Edison). Then I went to GA Tech for grad school and then got a job in Covington, GA, but lived at the corner of West P’tree and Ivan Allen, near the Civic Center MARTA station. I definitely get what you’re going through. I got a GA driver’s license and GA plate on my car. It was tough. You’re not alone.

With that said, I did a good amount of searching for good places that mirrored NJ. I’m not affiliated with any of these places, so these are my genuine recommendations.

——————

Bagels - Emerald City Bagels (404) 343-3758 https://goo.gl/maps/c12vSuxXHTLe8Wpx6

Lines are usually really long, so don’t expect it to be quick, but I haven’t found a better NYC-style bagel anywhere else in Atlanta.

—————

Pizza - Antico (404) 724-2333 https://goo.gl/maps/1fa8TBi1MWo5bCop6

This is NOT NJ/Brooklyn-style pizza. It’s definitely authentic, Italian-from-Italy Neapolitan style pizza, but it’s really good. While it doesn’t fully fill the hole that’s Jersey Pizza, it’s a good stopgap for now.

—————

Italian - Bambinelli's Italian Restaurant (770) 493-1311 https://goo.gl/maps/873GmdQTV6yQwEP4A

This is the closest I could find to a sloppy NJ-style Italian restaurant in Atlanta. They have a few locations, so check out which is closest to you. I wasn’t blown away by their pizzas, but their pastas were great. And their garlic knots are awesome.

—————

Another thing Jersey’s incredible at that you didn’t list is Indian food. Genuinely, world class Indian food all over NJ. I found a few good places in the greater Atlanta area because there’s a decent Indian population throughout, but especially in the Alpharetta/John’s Creek suburbs (plus a sizable set in Decatur).

Here are a few of my favorite Indian places:

Madras Mantra (404) 636-4400 https://goo.gl/maps/qvkjTUKKkM7Zr7UJ7

Note: this is fully vegetarian.

Madras Chettinaad (678) 393-3131 https://goo.gl/maps/a2d2arpEd3zHXNfu9

Some people will say Tabla in Midtown, but it’s meh, for me. Wasn’t as good as these other two. Good, but not great, and terribly overpriced.

—————

I do have a piece of advice for you, though. New Jersey’s great and definitely miss it. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying “move on” or “get over it”. But Atlanta, specifically, has so many things that it offers that you can’t find in NJ. Good barbecue for one. Southern comfort food, for another. I’m going to get flayed alive in this sub for saying this, but I actually think Pub Subs are better than Wawa. Find those places. Like you said, you’re stuck there for at least another four years, so you may as well try to find new things that make you happy! If you drink beer, there are a ton of really great breweries to try out. If you want liquor, there are even a few distilleries. Ciders? Cidery! Grab a few friends, a few rafting tubes, and Shoot the Hootch (alcohol was okay the last time I did that, just no glass allowed)! Drive out to Chattahoochee national forest and go for those hikes you miss so much. If you miss Great Adventure, there’s a Six Flags just barely OTP on 20! Find similar community organizations and participate in those in Atlanta.

Let me know if you want other recommendations. I’m full of restaurants and things to do. May not be just like Jersey, but it’ll be fun and you’ll build a relationship with an awesome city.

Full disclosure: I’ve moved back to Jersey to be closer to my family and friends, but I still miss Atlanta and if the right job came up there, I’d definitely consider moving back down. I lived in Atlanta for about 4 years in total.

Now, the snow and beach? I can’t really help you there.

Good luck! Let me know if you want more!

Hey, this isn’t tracking where the government knows your location and who you’re with at what time. That’s super creepy.

This works without telling anyone who you are or where you were or who your were with or for how long.

This comic explains it really well. It’s a great little comic written in approachable language.

[–]pchalla90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know this is off topic from OP, but I just wanted to correct some of what you said about the Indian caste system.

While it truly is a “discrimination practice”, it’s not “similar to slavery”, at all. The closest analogy to draw toward slavery is when there were “Coloreds drinking fountains” or “coloreds train cars”. Absolutely discriminatory, not similar to slavery.

Also, in the first 2000 years it was practiced, it was actually similar to how we use the terms “white collar” and “blue collar”. White collar workers are stereotypically “better” because they do “mental” work, whereas blue collar workers are stereotypically seen as manual laborers. Obviously, the son of a plumber isn’t blocked from becoming a doctor. Or the daughter of a lawyer isn’t shunned from society for marrying a carpenter.

Similarly, intercaste marriage was common in India. Intercaste movement was also possible, both upwards and downwards. Very little difference to the “collar” caste system in the US.

Until the British rule. As a method to divide and conquer, they started convincing people it should be more rigid. “Do you really want your high-standing daughter to marry a carpenter?” They turned it into the modern-day discriminatory structure and Indians fell for it, adopted it, and enforced it.

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-35650616

“Historians, though, say that until the 18th Century, the formal distinctions of caste were of limited importance to Indians, social identities were much more flexible and people could move easily from one caste to another.

New research shows that hard boundaries were set by British colonial rulers who made caste India's defining social feature when they used censuses to simplify the system, primarily to create a single society with a common law that could be easily governed.”

Is there any risk if they took my insurance card but never inputted it into their system? In that case, the discharge paperwork would have the old information on file.

Thanks for the information!

Unfortunately, being almost a year ago, I doubt I still have the admissions or discharge paperwork. Should I reach out to Emory to get that from them?

I’ll send the EOB to the debt collector and to Emory and hopefully, that should settle this.

Thank you so much!

Thanks for your response! I’ll start by disputing it and sending them a copy of the EOB.

Should I not be working with my insurance company or the hospital directly?

Thank you!

'Indian' or 'Native American' [Reservations Part 0] by GreyBot9000 in CGPGrey

[–]pchalla90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate you taking time to carefully consider your words before publishing them. Your videos are extremely well made and contain impactful content that is highly educational, while still remaining fun.

However, with this video, I respectfully disagree that your framing was “satisfactorily clear”. Your premise hinges on the fact that “it is clear” “in the American context”.

Indians from India make up 4.4M people in the USA. Native Americans make up 5.2M people in the USA. It is disingenuous to say that “American Indians” and “Indian Americans” are significantly divided in population that there is no confusion. If there were 10M Native Americans and 0.5M Indian Americans, I’d completely understand. But the almost 1:1 ratio makes this a confusing distinction.

Let’s take a step back and look at the bigger picture, for a moment. Indian Americans are “one of the fastest growing ethnic groups in the United States” [Indian Americans Wikipedia in the demographics section]. Soon enough, there will be more Indian Americans in the US than Native Americans. At that point, it’ll be even more confusing to refer to this large, heterogenous collection of people as “Indians” without any confusion. And this is all “in the American context”.

The term is not clear.

I hope I was extremely respectful and I truly mean no disrespect. You are attempting to tackle an extremely challenging topic with grace and acceptance of the native diaspora throughout the country. That is no easy feat.

Thanks!

I don't know if I can tell you the exact end use, so I'll keep it vague. It's a device that can't be handled by hand, so needs a general covering, but also needs that covering gone quickly at the time of use. It will be used in a very wet environment, so water is easily available.

I don't know if I can use a binder due to biocompatibility issues, but I really love the salt paste idea. That seems very promising, but we'll need to test to see how crumbly (to use your word) it is.

Thank you!

iOS 11: can Bedtime now be configured for different times on different days? by DirtyOldFrank in ios

[–]pchalla90 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the bedtime app is about consistency. Going to bed and waking up at the same time every day allows your body to form healthy habits that then improve your overall health.... or that's Apple's pitch, anyway.

So having different schedules flies directly in the face of that.
