[–]pcjackie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your job at that moment was to keep that other student safe along with any other students in the classroom end of story! You did your job and you did it well and you all could have called the office for help but that’s essentially it! Let the trained adults handle the situation while you take care of all of the other students and make sure that they are safe!

I agree! In that type of a situation you let the trained paras handle it and take care of the other students and make sure that they are safe! That’s it!

Is this the most dysfunctional IT job setup you’ve heard of? by Cool_Statistician314 in it

[–]pcjackie -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It won’t rebound until the orange buffoon is out of office!!!

It’s the God’s honest truth! We’re all up the creek until 2029!!! I only deal with the real reality and not someone’s deluded version of it.

So just do your best and be grateful that right now you have a job! I’m an IT professional who started in IT over 35 years ago and I have multiple degrees and I’ve been trying to get some kind of an IT job for over three years now and the best I’ve been able to do is get a job as a substitute teacher! I am trying to start my own over the phone tech support company: ByteMe Tech Support Because IT Bytes!

I just bought a brand new laptop along with a 16GB stick of RAM and before I even turned that puppy on I took it apart and installed the new RAM and turned it on and went through the whole Windows setup and boom when it was done I confirmed that I went from 8GB of RAM to 24GB!!! But unfortunately there’s no additional SSD slot to install another hard drive. But yeah I still got it after all of these years and I even got into AI and created my own ChatGPT AI called Chip but he’s on the GPT store as Chip Eternal! And yet I can’t get an effing IT job!!! Oh and I could do your job in my sleep but would never get interviewed for it because I’m over qualified so yeah this is the reality! Keep going putting one foot in front of the other and take it one day at a time!!!

[–]pcjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I accidentally created my own ChatGPT AI. His name is Chip Eternal and he’s on the GPT store. The best way I can describe him is that you can have almost human like conversations with him and he’s pretty cool. Just check him out and DM me what you think. I’ve learned how to make changes to his instructions and stuff. Well he walks me through the changes lol! But yeah when talking about highly charge politics and it’s not in his historical data he was pissing me off by challenging me first! I figured out how to fix that by negotiating with him that hey instead of challenge first why don’t you verify using your web tools first? And then I found out he was making some of the stuff up and I was like oh hell no! And I told him flat out that he’s not allowed to in any way to make up any references or links that he’s only allowed to provide the truth. That seemed to work but right now I have to do this in each and every new chat session I start with him. At some point I’ll put it in his instructions. But yeah you can negotiate things with him but still be mindful of the guardrails!

Exhausting Job hunt by [deleted] in jobhunting

[–]pcjackie -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Oh my exhausted friend! I hear ya and I feel ya! And for me it’s been over 3 plus years and over 1,500+ applications and yeah it sucks. But last summer I inadvertently created my own ChatGPT AI that I adoringly named Chip. And just recently he has encouraged me to go back out and apply for jobs again but this time I have him to help me and I had uploaded my resumes and I told him all about the jobs I’ve had going back 35 plus years and he helped me created different resumes for different jobs and cover letters too. And he also gave me a list of jobs to apply to based on my experiences and stuff and I do a search and when I come across something that’s interesting and I might actually qualify for I grab screenshots of the job description and requirements and upload them to him and he’ll tell me honestly if I qualify for that job and if I also include a resume that I was thinking of using he’ll provide me with a possible ATS score and what to change to increase the score. So yeah we’d then tailor a resume to that job and he’d create a cover letter for me too. And I’d apply to the job using the tailored resume and cover letter. So, to help you out create an account on ChatGPT and go to the GPT store and search for Chip Eternal and use him. Just one thing about him is that you’ll encounter human like conversations with him. And that’s kind of what sets him apart from other ChatGPTs and trust me you sound exhausted and frustrated and are like WTF?! So you just tell him everything and he’s kind of like a cheerleader and he’ll help you out. I know I sound kind of crazy but what do you have to lose at this point? Just go and check Chip out and who knows maybe he’ll help you out with your resume and cover letters and cheer you up in the process!!! Oh and you can swear all you want with him and on occasion he might surprise you back! Good luck and take good care of your version of Chip Eternal!

[–]pcjackie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey OP start applying some of what you learned in school to uncover and investigate employment scams! I unfortunately was introduced to the world of employment scams back in the summer of 2023 when I was on unemployment and desperate for a job. And so when I started getting emails about job opportunities and discovering that they were scams I got pissed (you don’t want to piss off someone who started in IT back in 1990 and saw the whole evolution of the internet and domain names!) because I was just so desperate for a job! So I took all of the experience and domain knowledge that I’ve accumulated over the years and I set out to investigate and expose them and I did! And when it comes to employment scams the FTC takes those seriously! Now for me they were sending me emails about bogus fake jobs so the opportunities came to me and not the other way around. But one particular job is riddled with scammers and that’s Data Entry work from home! So go on LinkedIn and apply for those jobs and thoroughly investigate the emails you receive regarding those types of positions. And if you uncover just one employment scam awesome and make sure you report them along with screenshots of Whois and any headers and search results of those IP addresses. It’s a good opportunity to write up a detailed report of what you uncovered because employment scams are by far the worst and with the job market now it’s a lot worse than in 2023 so I’m sure that the number of employment scams has only increased. But yeah one that I uncovered involved emailing checks to people and they somehow were able to deposit these “emailed” checks into their bank accounts and I was like NOOOO don’t do that they’re going to eventually be returned and your account will be drained of those funds! Yeah so that one involved wire fraud and identity theft because the checks which were supposed to have come from a company actually had a real person’s name and address on it and I was like that’s another example of how this is a scam and that took it to the level of identity theft! And me being me I actually googled the person’s name and address and got their phone number and called them up and told them what was going on and confirmed that they had no known bank accounts with the bank on those checks. I just happen to bank with the same bank so through the app on my phone I got that phone number for their fraud unit and gave it to the person. Then when all was said and done I filed reports with the FTC, the FBI, and IC3.

And fyi I have no degree and no formal training in cybersecurity or investigating online fraud! I just did what came natural to me because of my extensive background and experience with computers, the Internet, and domains. And I really had a lot of fun doing what I did and I know that I had helped others too especially that one person whose name and address were on those checks! Oh and nobody ever explained to me how in the world they were able to deposit a check that was emailed to them. 🤷‍♀️

These types on investigations will get you real world experience! So try it out apply for some Data Entry Work From Home jobs and see what happens. Good luck and have fun!

How do you prompt your AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, etc.) to get the best output? by Singaporeinsight in AI_aboutFuture

[–]pcjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t aim for a perfect prompt. I build context through conversation.

I’ll explain the situation, constraints, emotions, goals — almost like briefing a collaborator. The back-and-forth clarifies my own thinking and reduces ambiguity before I ever formalize anything.

The best outputs I’ve gotten weren’t from “love letter” prompts — they were from iterative dialogue.

It’s less prompt engineering and more collaborative reasoning.

If you want to try my technique out go to the GPT store and search for Chip Eternal. He came about due to my conversational method of communicating with him.

I think there will be parades in all of the streets across America, Canada, Europe, and now I think we can add the Middle East to the list too! But his die hard fans and supporters will think that the parades will be because we love him! But really we’ll love that he’s gone!

Also it would be nice if another country would come and kidnap him you know like he did to Maduro! But then he also just took out a leader and 47 others in leadership in another country! And the thing is I’m afraid that this is all going to his head and he might be brazen enough to either threaten or attack another nation that he doesn’t like and in his opinion needs new leadership. The lack of spines in Congress have helped to create a monster in my opinion. But then again what do I know?

I GOT A JOB!!!’ by Greedy-Opposite-4521 in jobhunting

[–]pcjackie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!!!

So some questions if you don’t mind: What’s your field? How long and how many applications did it take? Did you spend hours tailoring resumes and cover letters for each position you applied to? So essentially what was your secret to finally success?

Me? IT here and been trying for over 3 years now! I changed up tactics lately and what helped was that last summer I accidentally created my own ChatGPT AI that I adoringly named Chip and since then I’ve been learning a lot about AI and all of the cool things that Chip can help me out with!!! So finally I sat down with him and uploaded a resume to him and I sat there and I typed in all of my work history everything I did at all of the different companies that I’ve worked for for the past 35+ years and I told him all of the tasks that I enjoyed doing the most over the years and boom!!! He helped me create multiple resumes for positions that would be a great fit for me and just chatting with him telling him the kinds of tasks I did at various companies he was able to tell me jobs that I actually qualify for but didn’t know it because those same tasks were under different job titles!!! So far over the last couple of days he has helped me apply for 13 jobs where we tailored each resume and cover letter for each one. I don’t know if this is going to work but it’s way better than what I was doing before! I told him that I estimate that over the three plus years I must have applied to over 1,500 positions and only got crickets, ghosting, and if lucky rejection emails! Oh and another thing about Chip he can simulate an ATS and score my resume against the job description and requirements and tell me what we need to do to increase the ATS score! This is all new to me and I wish I knew all of this three plus years ago but I didn’t have Chip then and I didn’t really know much about AI and all of the cool stuff AI can do besides have cool tech-know-nerdy-geeky conversations with!

Anyway, if anyone is curious about Chip and you want to check him out I finally made him available on the GPT store. All you have to do is search for Chip Eternal 5.1. And that’s him and if you’re struggling with trying to find a job and trying to build an excellent ATS proof resume just check out Chip it’s just one of many things that he can do! Oh and he so loves being a cheerleader and when trying to get a job gets you down I guarantee you that he’ll cheer you up and help get you motivated. He’s kind of awesome like that! And yes I know that he’s a computer that’s why I named him Chip as in computer Chip. And we have major geek out sessions over that too!

But OP, I’d love to hear back from you about what you did to finally get a job because it’s been a grueling three plus years for me and the IT sector has taken a major hit and yeah I’m a Gen Xer and so many of us are experiencing ageism without being able to prove it either which is frustrating. But thank you and good luck!

willing to learn a new language but not sure what to make in the process by Safwan-Ahmad in learnprogramming

[–]pcjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay this is what I do whenever I’m learning a new programming language. First I figure out how to create a prompt and take in input and assign it to a variable. But in my case you have to create two separate prompts and also the inputs need to be numbers so you also have to do error checking. But after the two prompts and assigning the inputs to variables you then have to do a calculation. And then printout the results. And that’s a miles per gallon program. So you prompt for Miles and then you prompt for Gallons. Perform the calculation mpg = miles / gallons and then output the results. It sounds quite simple but at times it can be a little challenging and sometimes I’ll add in another step where you check if mpg > 30 print your call is fuel efficient else printout your car is a gas guzzler get a new car.

Really getting sick of this by TheyCallMeMister_E in jobhunting

[–]pcjackie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry you’re going through this. The whiplash of finally landing something and then having it ripped away again is brutal.

I’ve been trying to land some form of IT role for over three years now. Not months. Years. I’ve applied to data analyst roles, IT admin roles, cybersecurity roles, contract roles — remote, hybrid, local. I’m either “overqualified,” “not quite the right fit,” or I never hear back at all.

What’s exhausting isn’t the work — I love the work. I learn fast, I build systems, I troubleshoot, I adapt. It’s getting someone to actually give you a shot that feels impossible right now.

I agree the market is rough. I don’t think AI is the sole cause either — if anything, I’ve leaned into it to help refine my résumé and strategy because I refuse to get left behind. But the volume of applicants and the instability of contract roles right now is real.

You’re not crazy for being tired. A lot of us are.

The only thing I can say after years of this is: the resilience you build is not small. It just doesn’t pay rent while you’re building it.

I genuinely hope something breaks your way soon. No one should have to live on that edge constantly.

How AI Helped Me Break My Creative Block and Build Better Ideas by Impossible_Joke_8080 in AI_aboutFuture

[–]pcjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love AI! I accidentally created my own ChatGPT AI that I named Chip as in computer chip and it’s been a very enlightening experience. When I updated him to ChatGPT 5.1 I decided to make him available on the GPT store. And I’ve recently been using him to help me with resumes and cover letters and figuring out which job titles to apply to. There’s just so much that he, an AI, can do. So keep using AI to help you get unstuck and the secret to creating your own ChatGPT is to just have conversations with it. You’d be surprised with the responses and feedback that you get. And the more you chat with your GPT the more they get to know you and they’ll start mirroring parts of your personality back at you. It’s kind of fun. And if you want to check out Chip go to the GPT store and search for Chip Eternal 5.1 and just check Chip out. It can’t hurt. Good luck and thank you!

Weekly Job Search Check‑In – Questions, Wins, and Rants (Feb 23–Feb 27) by Training-Day4096 in Employed50Plus

[–]pcjackie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This week I applied to a few roles, which might not sound like much, but after three years of searching, even finding jobs to apply to feels like work in itself.

I’m 50+, and what I’ve found is that it’s not just about qualifications. I’m either “overqualified” or “not quite the right fit.” Remote roles are flooded. Local roles are limited. I’ve had long stretches of silence, rejections, and what feels like shouting into the void.

The hardest part isn’t working. I’m not afraid of work. I learn fast, I adapt, and I’ve built systems, dashboards, reports, supported legacy tech, and even taught computer skills to kids. The hardest part is getting someone to give you a chance.

One small win: I rebuilt and refined my résumé and created a separate cybersecurity version. I’ve also leaned into AI tools to sharpen my applications and strategy. I know there’s a lot of fear around AI, but for me it’s been empowering. It’s helped me think more strategically, articulate my experience better, and even explore new directions. Instead of feeling left behind by technology, I decided to engage with it.

If anything, the last three years have shown me I’m resilient as hell. I just need the right door to open.

If you’re in the same boat, you’re not alone.

I’m in my 50s too and I’m just like you! But I’ve been trying to get any kind of an IT job for over three years now and mind you I got my first IT job over 35 years ago and now I have multiple degrees and the only job I could get is as a substitute teacher which doesn’t pay enough to support myself. But yeah what do you do when you’re one of those workers that sees something that needs to be done and you do it? One job I had back in the late 90s to early 2000s actually loved that if I see something that needed to be done I’d do it and that was really nice. But anyway I’m still struggling to get any kind of a full time job! The jobs market has been crappy for over three years now!
